Growing up, I remember my dad had a set of drawers (found out later they were my grandpa's from when he was in the service) where he kept all the stuff that didn't fit neatly into a defined space in his organization system in his workshop. In short, it was a junk drawer.
Each weekend, I would race to finish my chores so I could go hang out in the shop. And when I'd get there, I'd beg to see something from the drawer. He'd pull out old pocket knives, bevel gauges, neat little fasteners etc. But only one thing would be shown each time. And then that one thing would be explained. And then we'd get to working on whatever needed working on.
My boy is 4 years old and he takes great pride in his daddy's work. He follows me everywhere, and even has his own special chair in my shop.
I guess it's time to start my own junk drawer tradition with him.
