Looking good. One question, why did you stop the ring on the outside of the circle? Could you have added another couple courses to keep it? Still looks great and I am sure you have a reason, just curious.

Strouty,

It only took me about 20 years, but I've learned that listening to the wife is in my best interest.

With her being an artist/ designer, I don't even question her anymore.

Thanks, 1/2 cup. I've got a long way to go.

Drives,
I started with a new company last friday. With trying to set a good precedence at work and getting the brick done before the usual Seattle weather makes it's return, I'm afraid it's all work and no play for me.

The thought of having a mud hole in the front yard is pretty good incentive to get the patio completed.

Riv: well then good luck with the new job and the projects to keep your bride happy. I've been digging in my yard all month and with it this hot I have to say it hasn't been a picnic. i'll contain myself from posting pictures in your thread, but i did it all by hand because i sold my rototiller last year thinking i'd have a big old Toro by now.

BTW i know it has rained this last week one day or maybe two, but when was our last day of rain before that? some summer we are having this year that is for sure.

cheers

Drives,

Digging in 90 degree heat is my idea of hell.

I'm not sure the last time it rained, and I hate to see my water bill from trying to keep some of my plants alive.

Other than that, I'm loving this weather!

Nice brick paths, the wife wants brick paths in the veg garden hence why I removed a trailer full of bricks from an old wall that fell down in my parents garden and was replaced with a wooden fence. Still got another load to collect sometime and then I need to train the kids to clean the mortar off the bricks!

Thanks Lippyp,

I love the look of the brick around your place.

I'm trying to make mine look like it's been around for a long while, as long as the house anyway.

I tried to enlist some help in cleaning the mortar off the bricks, but failed miserably.

Might as well put the cover on that boat ?

That's kinda a sore subject around here.

Then again, with the Kings being catch and release only, and the pinks starting to run, why bother fishing?

I will be gearing up for the Coho:thumbup:

Riv and Lippy: it's hard to train or even pay kids these days to do something you don't like doing yourself. not sure what some of them will do once their Dads and grand dads pass and they have to fix something.

hope you get the Honey Do's done before we lose the sunshine and maybe another trip or two out with the boat. that's good incentive isn't it? i didn't play golf for 2 summers while redoing my front yard and i just started the backyard project so maybe another 2 years and i'll start playing golf again while my wife and kids enjoy the yard.

good luck and the path and planter look awesome. BTW i also would buy and clean old bricks rather than buy new ones they just have more character not to mention the history and quality.

Drives,

There will be plenty of time to chase some Coho later.

I brought the last of the sand in today, and got everything string-lined and screeded.

Nothing left to do now except lay brick! (lots and lots of brick)

I agree with you on the old VS. new brick. I love the weathered, used look, and the price is right!

Tonight we had our National Night Out neighborhood party.

We closed our street, and set up tables and chairs in our front yard.

All of the neighbors on our street brought food, beer and wine.

The Mayor of our city came, as with the Police and Fire Dept.

The kids got to sit in a cop car, and play with the sirens.

They got to climb all over the fire truck.

We had a band playing, and a couple BBQs going.

Being a fairly ethnically diverse neighborhood, we had a wide range of food.

Approx. 100 people showed up, and hung out from 5 to 10.

The kids ran, the dogs ran and the adults just spent some time getting to know each other.

All in all, a very nice evening.

Riv: sounds like good night of fun after all the digging and brick work you've been doing.

when i was selling Real Estate we used the term Location, Location, Location if you were looking for a home that would appreciate more. We should have said neighbors, neighbors, neighbors because that is what you should be looking for. sounds like you have a great spot with some great people around you.

hopefully when we move we'll find a place that has great neighbors because in my neighborhood currently everyone pretty much keeps to themselves. when we moved into our neighborhood 30 years ago most of the neighbors were my parents and grandparents age and then we had 5 kids that would take us everywhere and too busy to socialize when we got back home so really didn't get to know our neighbors here.

best of luck with the new job and finishing up the brick work.

Thanks guys,

National Night Out is a great program, and a great way to meet your neighbors.

This afternoon's fun was to set a couple more rows of brick, then spread and sweep a finer sand into the voids, followed by some compaction to get it all settled.

The finer sand gets into the smaller joints, and locks them in.

I use a 1/2" rubber mat and a manual compactor. It's a pretty good work out.

That's a good way to save renting a powered compactor. Can you get a mat like that at lowes or Home Depot?

Bagged,

I'm not sure about a good source for rubber.

I got mine from some crate/pallets for stone counter tops.

Free and clean? I'd say you're a lucky guy!

I picked up about 250 yesterday, and another 150 this morning.

That should just about do everything.

Now, I get to go spend my day cleaning and setting.

Riv: if your wrists and forearm gets sore i'd recommend a gyro for rehab because i don't take advil for my tennis/golf elbow anymore after using mine. ask and i'll PM you with a web site for some information.

i really can't think of too many tougher jobs than cleaning mortar off bricks, but like you and i and others know the old bricks are the best bricks.

your project is looking great.

BTW 1/2's bricks aren't exactly clean because he's pulling them out of a HUGE pile of dirt. :D

You must be busy with the new job ?

Edit : Ooops, didn't see the Reno trip.

New job, getting both kids off to college, installing appliances at the folks house, and the patio have kept me out of the shop for weeks.

Looking forward to getting back to it sometime soon.

After weeks of neglecting the yard, patio project, shop projects, and everything else I like to do, I finally placed the last brick on the patio today.:rocker:

Made a trip to the local nursery looking for a tree that was a good match for location/full sun/ 6-8 ft. tall/ and not too big in diameter.

Ended up with a Kilimanjaro snowflake AKA- Viburnum plicatum.

Can't wait to see it go thru the seasons.

So what are we, chopped liver? You couldn't even clean up all the dirt off the bricks before you took the picture for us?

Thanks Strouty.

Not much of a holiday for me, worked my *** off.

But it was worth it, as we had the first neighborhood patio party tonight.

Lots of friends, lots of dogs, and a roaring fire!
