Excellent thread!

You've really got a talent for visualizing and executing interesting and beautiful projects with new and reclaimed materials. It's rare when folks can do it all, especially as well as you.

Can you please post some pics of the finished TV stand?

I also now know who I'm competing with on Seattle CL for cool old tools.

Cheers,
Tyler

Wow.

Thanks so much.

I took a new job awhile back, and it is a lot more time consuming than my previous employment.

But, it was a necessary move to fund having two kids in college.

Also, my shop has turned into more of a storage unit for a spell, making it harder to get to my tools and taking up space for projects.

I have been dreaming up new projects, and looking forward to getting going again.

Again,
Thanks for the kind words.

Glad to see that in fact there isn't dirt in your face!!!! Glad to hear that projects might, just might start again. You're clearly a source of inspiration here. Let the good times roll...

Ps I join the ranks of parents with college kids very soon! My daughter is a senior in HS and already applied to the early admissions at the schools she wanted to attend in the fall.

It seems my new project looks nothing like a table.

Maybe more along the lines of my other thread: The boy brought home his 1st project!
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=249106

I'll get around to starting a new thread about it, as soon as I settle on a title.

So far, I'm thinking:

The old fart brought home his 1st project!

In over my head!

What the hell did I just do?

Can you help me explain this to my wife?

Seems the neighbors aren't too happy with me right now.

Maybe I'm too old to drive a stick.

Either way, I'm happy to have a place to come for professional advice and guidance.

woot woot. Riv posted! lol

Not much going on around my shop.

I did see a sign that I've never seen before, and I'm not really sure what it's telling me to do.

Look, maintain, and correct before you go/use??????

Brought home the start to some long term projects. A neighborhood Elm tree came down due to the city boys and all their wisdom.

Anyway, I figure these rounds are in the 500 lbs plus range and I'm glad I had means of loading and unloading without F'n my back up too much.

Now that they are home, I painted them to retard the drying process so they don't dry out too fast and crack (we'll see how it works)

Hoping to work with a coworker and set up his mill in my yard and slab them up.

Then it will be sticker them under cover with good ventilation for a good long while.

If all goes well, I'll end up with some useable live edge table tops.

I never thought about painting them, I picked up a big oak slab once and laid it out on the concrete parking lot to dry out. You can already guess it split in several pieces rather quickly. If I run into another piece, I know what to do now, thanks!

Fingers crossed for you, those are nice slabs. That large one looks burled or is that just a branching?

With the rough sawn chainsaw marks, it hard to tell how much burl there might be. Some of it is crotch, or branching.

I guess that's half the fun, having to wait and see how they'll look finished.

Thanks 1/2 Cup,
It would be nice to have some dedicated square footage for drying wood, but that not going to happen. We do the best we can with what we've got.

Late to the party but....

I have an original shop service manual for my 1968 John Deere 2020. Its full of very similar cartoonish looking illustrations. My guess would be adjust, inspect, lube and proceed to the next step.

Cool old illustration. Wish it was one that I could have printed out. Maybe I'll get it into PS and clean it up a bit. I like the "for those who didn't always read very good" remark. Seems thing don't really change much after all.

Tool,
I haven't seen his mill as of yet, so I'm interested in seeing what kind of capacity it has as well. He helped me load them, and seemed to think they were do-able.

Another thing that gets done with post and beam buildings is that they cut a saw kerf in the top or back of the beams to keep them from cracking as much, I wonder if that would help too?

Had a couple of good friends come over and help me cut up some Elm Tree rounds today. Had a great Sunday morning making noise and dust.

Utilized an Alaskan Chainsaw Mill with a home-brew rail system. Worked great!

Having never worked with Elm before, I was in for a pleasant surprise.

We all spilt up the goods, and I ended up with a nice stack. All stickered and ready to cure for bit.

Riv: nice work with the Elm. lots of heavy lifting even if you did have a lift helping and some good friends and you've got some cool wood for a project to be made later.

if i find some good logs at a great price or free i'll send you a PM unless i can borrow your friends and you don't need any more wood.

have a great 4th!!

PS. did you buy a new boat yet or are you still shopping while you are working on your cool truck? i bet you are wondering why you sold the old boat with all this great weather we are having or was it a great day (one of the few for a boat owner) when you saw the old boat go down the road behind somebody else's rig?
