Picked up a new addition to the shop. A nice old Rock Island 851 pivoting jaw vise.

I'd like to tell you that I picked it up for dirt cheap, but I shed a few bucks for this one. I "pre-approved" purchase of a pivot jaw vise if I ever saw one that was available, so it was an easy decision.

Brought it home and tore it down.

A couple turns in the parts washer cleaned it up a bit.

Then a hot oil treatment.

I intentionally left some of the original paint on parts that don't show. I'm thinking the next owner may want to use them as reference.

I need to pick up a few washers before I completely re-assemble it.

Can't wait to mount it to my bench and put it back in use.

Riven, great score:thumbup:

Thanks, I am pretty happy with it. At least I will be when I get it all put back together.

Using the old Craftsman to remove the jaw insert screws

Of course, two came out easy, one argued, and one said "NO".

Don't think I'm going to find these screws at Home Depot:lol:

Anybody got any ideas for a source for such screws? How about something to alter to fit?

Riv: glad to see you picked up that cool Rock island swivel jaw vise. sorry to hear it's giving you a few issues, but at least the swivel jaw is in good shape and moving and not rusted in place like so many are. i'll put my comments on a couple possible fixes for your stubborn jaw screw removal and maybe a way to make new screws over on the vise repair 101 thread where you also posted your vise.

A little PB Blaster, a little Mapp gas, a little patience resulted in success

I've ordered some new brass washers, so final assembly will need to wait for the mailman.

The jaw screws are no longer available thru the link Bears posted, but at least there is a part number for me to test my Google Fu

Always nice when you can get yourself out of a bind. I am willing to bet you can find screws like that somewhere. Seems like there are a lot of vises that use a similar setup. At a minimum, someone could machine the that way.

I'm may be old and slow but then again, what's the hurry? I usually figure it out given enough time.

I ordered some screws that look promising, but they didn't post actual specs on them. They are the replacement screws Bear posted. I contacted Sears customer via the website chat. Surprisingly good customer service, all things considered.

The previous owner had made a replacement pin for the pivoting jaw.

I took another stab at it.

Nope, couldn't do that with my old vise.

Well done..

Thanks,

I'm pretty happy with it.

The Craftsman will move to another bench. It's in too good of shape to let go of.

I was having issues with it not tightening down to the base, but once removed from the bench I was able to tight up the nut and secure it in place with locktight.

My 86 year old Dad asked me for a scroll saw for a project he'd like to do.

I found one on CL that came with a nice stand and roller base.

Ran it for a bit before I bought it, all seemed fine. (shown dismantled)

ARlc

Brough it home to try it out. The variable speed control was all jumpy and inconsistent.

Went online to do some after-the-fact research on my purchase.

Seems this Delta 40-601 has a bad habit of the "high tech" variable speed taking a dump.

after reading up, I thought it was the speed sensor.

52mu

Decided to scrap it and buy another unit, and wanted to salvage the nice cast iron table for some future project.

In taking it apart, I found a broken wheel inside. Speed sensor rotor. No longer available/ obsolete part.

The "I can fix it" challenge kicks in.

I CA glued the parts of the wheel together, then epoxied up the sides. Then I epoxied the center hub in.

Next is to chuck it up on the lathe, and try to true it up as much as possible.
Hope this helps keep it balanced.

Then the challenge of getting it all back together correctly.

Nothing going on at my house tonight, so I got to go ahead and spin the rotor on the lathe.
VBAO

You can still see the cracks, but it's solid.
5c_L

I re-assembled the saw, and ran it up to 2000 strokes per minute.

The variable speed is a little slow to react, but it's smooth.

Ranges from about 40 strokes to 2000.

Happy to see the rotor didn't fly apart at top speed.

I do need to check the clearance between the rotor and the sensor. It's spec'd to be 0.01".

Because I sanded it, it may be a bigger gap than it should be. I'll need to get some feeler gauges to make sure.

I had to look back through the thread and find when I started the desktop, looks like it was the beginning of March, it still isn’t done, but damn close. I used your three part recipe as a top coat, but I did something weird, before it dried I buffed it out with a clean cloth. I did the same thing with the waterlox I used on another top, it came out pretty nice and I like the results so far. Two coats, may do one more, but I am itching to get this installed.

Too bad you are way out in Seattle. On Sept. 14 my company hosts and industrial furniture show with more than 40 makers who use machine parts and surplus. Last year we had 2000-3000 people, DJ, food, beer. It was a party!

Royce,
Coming from someone of your talent and taste, that’s a compliment I’ll take!

I also appreciate the encouragement to get back to producing something.
Been spending too much time on the old truck.

Thanks again

Those would make a nice base for my miter saw stand.

LoL. I literally thought the same thing about my bench grinder!

I agree 114%. One of my first read through threads and still love to see what Riv makes. It’s inspirational, there are a lot of great threads but there are a few that are exceptional, like this one, where literally every single creation is a work of magnificent creativity.

Ok Riv, you’ve received enough sunshine to sun burn your ****. Hope that kicks things into gear...

Hey all, nice to see a little activity on this thread, one of my favorites. All I can add is, Riv, put down the truck and make something cool. Your new acquisition is a great place to start and you get a 3 day weekend to get you going.:bounce:

Is there a new view out my shop window coming?

Patience isn’t my strong suit.

Riv: sounds nice. waiting on developer to close yours or for your seller to move out? in any case here's some LUCK and hope the move is fairly easy once it happens.

La Conner brewery is one of our favorite spots and not only good beer, but pizza or salmon sandwich is worth the drive.

did you find a big garage already built or land to build one on?
