Bit of an odd Thanksgiving this year, but I enjoyed some time off.

Got to spend a few days working with my daughter building a table for her new apartment.

Trued up and de-barked one of the Elm tree rounds I cut awhile back.

Some old rough sawn oak for the legs.

Then it was onto gluing up the transom, and getting a plan together for how to clamp it all together without blocking where the fasteners will need to go.

Actually kinda like this no stress, no fuss, type holiday.

Even got some doggie play time in.

Back at the old house for a bit.

Not much to do here, as all my tools/projects are at the new place.

But, I brought my Tormek and a bunch of edge tools to sharpen.

Spending my cold, dark evenings sharpening tools and listening to my new favorite podcast-WB Walker’s Old Soul Radio Show.

Not a bad way to pass some time.

Riv, that is something I need to start doing. I've got some chisels and a couple old hand planes that need to be sharpened. I'm going to try it by hand with a couple of water stones I bought awhile back.
That Tormek system makes it looks easy.

I sharpened by hand for years. Kinda liked doing it that way.
Using a jig helps maintain a consistent angle.

The Tormek is a great way to go, but the cost to get started is a bit steep.

There are a few other machines out there now that are considerably cheaper

I'll dig it out and take a few pictures, it's basically a Tormek knock-off. I think it may be discontinued.

Any amount of grinding/honing is for naught if the back, or flat part of the blade isn’t flat too.
Working the bevel side without addressing the flat side will yield you a serrated edge.
You have to remove any scratches.

The Tormek is great for bevels, but doesn’t address the flats, and that is where the work is.

I have a dedicated honing station, with a large piece of stone(not a machinist stone/block/surface plate), but it’s flat enough for me.

I use a variety of wet/dry sand paper and a number of diamond sharpening surfaces.

After I flatten/hone the flat, then it goes on the sharpener.

The use of a sharpie marker helps track your progress.

The whole backside doesn’t need to be flattened, I usually focus on the first 1/4”.

You might try Dykem or Nissen machinists layout fluid on the backs. One swipe gives you a uniform, continuous witness mark.

I’ve used the Dykem before, but I never seem to find it when I need it.
Always seems to be plenty of sharpies around though!

Got 3 plane blades done tonight, and one chisel.

An old Sandvik that’s been following me around for years. Started out as a chisel then became a paint scraper, then a blunt object.

Now it’s a chisel again!

Would have gotten more done tonight if it weren’t for the black lump in my way.

Sometime ago I traded some chisels for some live edge lumber.

Talked to the guy last week, and he said he had pretty much wrecked and abused them.

I told him to bring them back, and I’d refresh them for him.

Like I needed more edges to sharpen

I just learnt how to put a slight curve/radius/camber on a blade using the Tormek from a YouTube video. Interesting bloke from the UK.

Can’t wait to try it out in this bronze spokeshave.

That is what I thought, wonder why? Rust? Or was it just a premium tool? No matter what, it is really cool.

I’m not sure about this one, but there are a lot of bronze shaves that are recast from mass produced tools.

A toolmaker/patternmaker could recast a Stanley cheaper than buying a new one. Then they could alter them for specific task with little cash spent or altering the original tool.
