I’ve got a couple of quick updates.

First I saw this yesterday. IMG_0795.jpeg

More importantly I got a lot of time in Mary Kay yesterday. I took her for two long morning drives. First one was by myself. Here she is in front of the same Bentley/ Lamborghini dealer that I stopped by in the Porsche a couple of weeks ago. IMG_0786.jpeg
I took her out a second time with my son after he woke up. In The late afternoon I went out for a third time: my wife, son and I picked up my mom and we went out for a couple of hours around the city and also stopped for dinner. She is running well. I am putting together a list of projects that I still need to address that will occupy my time for while but it’s really great to have her back.

Conundrum.
I know. This sounds ridiculous. Remember Steve Martin in The Jerk. There is a scene where some guy is absolutely balling his eyes out while asking The Jerk for money. The reason he needs the money: the leather seats in his Cadillac are cracked and he needs them replaced. I’m sure I sound like that guy. I also feel like that guy.

In my defense I never said any of this makes any sense. It doesn’t.
But I am having fun.

Note: I wrote this post and the one following earlier today but posted them by mistake in a different thread. I‘ll delete in the other thread and repost here:

So this might be the only place on the internet where I might get a sympathetic audience to this idea. I’m thinking of buying a second car lift. I’m not sure I can get it to work however.

Here is the garage today. IMG_0803.jpeg
It’s great but there is one thing missing: This
IMG_0815.jpeg
It’s too nice of a car to keep outside. I’d like to find a way to park all three in the garage. I have thought about trading it in. I don’t need both a 911 and a M5. If I sold the M5 I would probably get something like a Grand Cherokee which I would be a lot more comfortable leaving outside. But Id like to see if I can fit all three cars in the garage instead.
I have the two post lift. I don’t think that will work however. My ceiling varies in height because both the roof and the floor are slopped to allow water to run off. But it’s at least 10’3” minimum. I think fitting the Cadillac at 56 inches too on top of the 911 at 52 inches tall is going to be tonight because the suspension will drop. Also I’m a little squeamish about lifting a car that high. I’m comfortable lifting a car a couple of feet off the ground to work under it but I’ve not used the lift to raise anything four and a half feet. Finally my wife really doesn’t want me to park a car under another on a two post lift. shes ok when I used it to work on a car but bot to park under a car. My guess is that if it’s used for parking that means that both my son and I will be under the car and she doesn’t want to lose us both if the top car falls off. Driving a car under another does I suppose pose a risk of having a car hit one of the posts and knocking the top one off. My wife is pretty good with letting me indulge in my hobbies but she feels pretty strongly about this so I want to accommodate her.

This ends up having me thinking about getting a four post lift. I’m not sure I can get that to work however. More about that in a minute.

Any four post lift will have to go on the right side of the garage. I’ll have to either move the two, post lift to the other side or the garage or sell it. I say this because the Cadillac is too long for the left side of the garage, especially if I want to open the man door.

If I get a four post lift I think I can get the buy off from the wife. Not really sure that parking under a car on a four post lift is any safer in reality than parking under one on a two post lift but it’s her perception that it is. I think I would be ok here.

Height wise I also think I could get it to work. Ive looked at the ceiling height calculator on the direct lift website. If I set the lift on the 56 inch high lock I can park the 911 with 4 or 5 inches of clearance. The Caddy at 56 inches tall would be about six inches from the ceiling. I’d have to park with the top down so that the garage door could still open. Maybe at some point I could get the garage door tracks raised so that I could park with the top up. Can I get the door raised so that it is less than six inches below the ceiling?

It’s with the width and with the ability to actually get the Cadillac on the lift that I think I have problems. I looked at the dimensions of the direct lift Pro Park 8s. I have their two post lift and I’m happy with it. It firs length wise Both in the garage and the Caddy would fit too. I put the tape measure at the overall length without the ramps belowIMG_0813.jpeg

The dowel held by the clamp is supposed to represent the position of post of that corner of the lift. I wanted to see if that would be In the way when parking on the left side of the garage. It’s not. The problem with this lift is the width. The drive thru dimension is 80.5 inches. A 1968 Cadillac is 79.9 inches wide. Not going to work.

Direct lift makes a couple of bigger four post lifts. The Pro Park 8s long is 86.5 inch drive thru width. Still awfully close. The Pro Park 9s is 97 inches drive thru. Both of these are longer. Which also creates problems.

A wider lift would also be a problem if I wanted to keep my two post lift on the left side of the garage. Currently is 135 inches from the side wall. The tape measure under the perpendicular to the lift is set to that dimension. There is clearance to the narrower four post. A wider one will be problematic. IMG_0811.jpeg

I like Geoff's suggestion of a double wide. Only problem is that it looks like you would need to move both bottom cars to lower it. Still you'd need to buy a 4th car, so there's that!

Not with the one in the second link I posted. It has separate upper decks. Could either get a fourth car or just store stuff on one side.

I don’t think a car falling onto the roof of the M5 or Porsche from a foot or so is going to be lethal. IIHS phased out their rollover test recently because roof strength got so good (most vehicles can withstand 4x their weight before 5” crush). Obviously not scientific, but to give you an idea…

I’d just sell the 2 post and get a 4 post with bridge jacks

Youre absolutely right. Also I’d much rather be in a car when the one on top falls than to be just standing there.
Not sure if this influences your decision, but I think drive thru width is the outer edge of the ramp. Inner column width on an 8s should be 94"
Yeah I see that too now. I think I was looking at the dimension they called drive thru clearance. Still with my Cadillac at 80 inch wide seven inches clearance on each side is going to be tight. I’m going to try to lay out one of the larger lifts foot print in my garage this weekend and see what I think.

Is a double wide four poster an option? Would avoid posts in the middle of the garage.

I personally would love one of these (but you still have one middle post at the back, but clear at the front)

Geoff, I’ve seen these before. Never in person but online, probably on this site. Really nice but at 20k no way. Even the 10k one is more than I want to commit to right now. I’d really like to see if I can get a four post to work while also keeping the two post. It’s a bucket list thing for me to do a full “frame off” restoration of a car some day and the two post would be awfully useful for that. To have a side of the garage to do a car restoration with the existing lift while I gave two cars parked one on top of the other on a four post on the other side would be ideal. Even now I find the two post quite useful. Here I am this weekend helping a friend put rock sliders on his new Bronco IMG_0801.jpeg

I think that dimension is also to the base plate, so you should have a few more inches. I believe mine is an 8s and I can try and get a quick dim on the posts tonight if someone else can't beat me.

Edit, I just measured mine and it is right at 94" inside post to inside post per their spec sheet.

Also if you find something larger, pay attention to the runway spacing. From memory, their wasn't much difference between the lift post spacing when I was looking and going to wider post spacing moved the runways to where they barely fit my required wheel base.

I hear you. Cost is one of several reasons why I don't have one. If you could get them here they'd be at least $40K in our dollars with exchange rate and shipping. I'll keep watching with interest.

I went to my first Porsche Club of America event today. It was a show and shine in the suburbs. There were some special cars there. A Carrera GT IMG_0826.jpeg
Also a couple of Dakars IMG_0830.jpegIMG_0831.jpegI think this second one might not be a real Dakar but just a regular 911 that someone lifted?
Finally there were a large number of GT3 and GT3RS cars.IMG_0828.jpeg

I entered my car in the show and shine. Unfortunately a bird crapped on it while I was there. Probably hurt my score.

Amazing thread. I read through the whole thing in stages over the course of today. You’ve created a great garage space and I am with you on the garages are for cars and car related stuff, everything else needs a separate home. That’s been my approach too.

Congrats on the 911t. I think you made a good choice and it will age like a fine wine. Time to move on the M5 whilst the residuals are still strong and take a bit of time to work out if you really need to replace it with a new daily.

The 911 Dakar is a nice bit of kit - you may not have picked up on this review from a well know British journalist - worth a watch

Thanks Cris. I’m glad you are enjoying the thread. I’m really trying wait another two years before I get another new car. I’ve really spent more than enough money lately.

It’s been about six weeks since my last Roubo workbench update. Progress has been a lot slower than I would have liked. I’ve traveled a couple of weekends since then and I also cut my right hand which involved a trip to the ER so I could get five stiches. Those are my excuses.

Last time I posted I was working on finishing the front laminate on part of the workbench top. I was unhappy with the dovetails that I had cut. I did decide to get a new piece of wood to remake them. However, when I was milling that piece of would my planer broke so this also has hurt progress. I’m pretty sure that I need a new drive belt As this happened to me once previously. I’ll disassemble it this weekend to confirm and buy a new belt. No big deal but it has caused additional delays.

Because of this I decided to focus on completing the base and I’m happy to report that progress has been made here. In fact the base is basically done except for some final sanding and finishing. Here it is. IMG_0849.jpeg
This is where to workbench will sit in my shop. Both to see better what it might look like as a completed bench and also to have another flat surface to put things on I put the back portion of the workbench top on the base. I still need to put mortises in the bottom of the top so it’s not sitting exactly where it will permanently go but if you squint it looks like a workbench now. IMG_0858.jpeg
Finally I also assembled the front leg vice. This piece will need to be shaped into a prettier shape for aesthetic reasons but the leg vise is functional.IMG_0863.jpegIMG_0867.jpeg

Thanks for following along.

That is one solid bench! Smiled at the planer issues. It's always something, isn't it? Hopefully not too many ****** somethings, though! :coffee:

Where is the final resting place for the bench? Will you use something to keep the wood from wicking moisture up from the floor via the legs?

It looks great so far. What’s your first project you have planned for it?

The bench will go right where it sits now. I am not worried about moisture there. It’s a basement but pretty dry and I painted that area under the bench.

My next big project is that I want to build a new cradenza to hold some stereo equipment I’ve recently bought. It will go under the TV in our family room. Before I start that I want to finish up some projects in the home theater: sound treatments, clean up my stereo rack and build the drawers for my bookcase. I also want to build a new wall hanging tool cabinet for some of my nicer woodworking tools. This will go over the bench I’m building now.
