so, i unboxed that Kobalt tool hanger today.
building one yourself would allow you to fit come issues, like:

these are a M12 2402 driver and a 2403 drill (upside down with the battery installed. you will notice that the M12 tools hang much differently than the M18's do. the handle on the M12 is both rounder, and flares out, while the M18's, at least the ones i have, dont.
while the 2402 looks like it is not sitting well in the image, it is actually very stable. swapping it around so the trigger end faces out causes it to droop, looking like it is going to fall out.
i would have concerns about storing the 2403 like that, for two reasons:
1) i think it could put dents into the grip.
2) i prefer not to store my tools with batteries in them, and this would cause the battery connection compartment to collect dust and other ****. this would also be an issue with putting M18 tools in upside down, but the M18 doesnt have the cup shaped receiver like the M12's do.
while the 2AH battery fits upside down, the 4AH battery is too tall.
but, building one yourself with all the same functionality would be substantial effort. the sides are perforated for use as a peg board for having things on. the top has an integrated power strip, with the ability to route the power cable out either side.
i think if i would designing this, i would provide for stacking boxes on top of each other and locking them together. the current design has the sides angle back at the top. it would still be possible to provide for stacking, but it would be more work.
wall mounting involves (potentially using provided) bolts to anchor a rail to the wall, and hanging the box on that. it makes installation easier (it is pretty heavy, more than i would want to hold myself while i tried to drive screws into the wall behind it). i cannot comment on how well the wall anchor works, since i just set it on the bench next to the tool box.
all in all, i am happy with the purchase. not perfect, but pretty adequate, and i think an great value for the price (99$, although i paid 79$. see previous post).
