The Milwaukee lights are great. It's been awhile since I've regularly posted, but I've amassed a number of Milwaukee M18 Fuel tools since I frequented these forums. I'll try to remember to take a pic to share here.

I love my M18 lights, I use the LED stand light and the search light all the time. I’m thinking about getting the M18 LED lantern light next, with the built-in usb for phone charging. We play cards out by the firepit all the time, it’d be great for that.

I’m sure the drill could handle it. I have the Irwin version of those bits and run them all the time in my M12 Gen2 Fuel impact driver.

I just posted a few days ago about getting crazy with my m12 fuel drill. Didnt have my M18 drill at work and I needed to drill through some 3/8" plate with a 2 1/4" hole saw.i honestly didnt believe it would be able to do it, and while it def wasnt ideal, it handled it without any issues. Things a beast

Awesome. Glad to hear these little drills can perform when needed. Thank you to both of you for your help.

Does anyone else have the m18 polisher? I’m curious if it actually makes it through an entire car on one battery..

I've got one I use with an Osborne brush for resurfacing wood, with a 5.0 battery I can do the square footage of a typical car. I've never used it on my truck though as a polisher.

Howdy!

In my continued quest to cut the cords and airlines out of my life, I'm looking to replace one of my favorite tools with a cordless version. I've been using this pneumatic Snap-on mini 90 degree air grinder for many years. I primarily use it with 2" quick change surface conditioning discs.

I'm thinking of replacing it with the Milwaukee(2438) 12v Variable Speed Polisher/Sander. It looks a bit bigger, but I could probably make do with that 80% of the time.

I have a mess of 18v stuff but no 12v(except for 18/12v combo chargers) so I'll have to buy a couple batteries with it. I was considering a couple of the 12v ratchets anyways, so I'm ok with this.

Any thoughts on that tool and using it with the 2" discs??

Thanks
-Chris

I have one, but I've used it more with 3" polishing pads than I have the small discs. I did use it with the discs twice when I was replacing some gaskets and it worked fine. I'd suggest buying it in a kit and getting a high aH battery with it if you use it for extended periods of time.

i only use mine with 2" roloc disks. works great. i usually use it with a 4AH battery (which also allows the tool to stand up when not being used) and i can't remember when i ran out of charge in one session.

I use mine with 2" and 3" roloc sanding discs every day for over a year now. Hardly use my air die grinder anymore. It wont blow you away with power or speed but it is very capable of most anything you can throw at it. If mine died I'd by another in a heartbeat. I hardly ever use air since I bought it. As jshillin said though you will definitely need some higher ah batteries for it. I'd recommend at least two 6.0ah batteries for it. With those you can go for hours swapping back and forth

I am thinking of getting the 2460 rotary tool. I have noticed other on line reviews beating them up. Any experiences here good or bad.

thanks

Thanks,

Do you find it necessary to use the 90 degree additional handle to control it?

The kit 2438-22x($229 home depot) comes with a 3.0xc battery and a 1.5 battery. That 3.0 adequate for decent run time? I'd probably get a 4.0 or 6.0 battery for when I'm running it a lot.

Thanks

My son need to drill a hole through a block wall. I bought a 2", carbide tipped hole saw but I did not have the correct mandrel for it. It had a hew on top so I got my M12 Fuel 3/8" impact wrench and the appropriate socket and handed it to him. It went through like hard butter :bounce: ! The hole saw is almost toast, but the job got done !

Considering retiring dewalt screw gun and 3/8 impact. any recommendations on which model of both tools.

I have the "original" M12 Fuel 3/8" impact. I love it. I don't think you need the additional power of the second gen M12 Fuel 3/8" impact, but it is a lot more compact.

I have yet to find ANYONE who makes a STRAIGHT 1/4" hex power screwdriver !

i use the handle about 50% of the time. if it is in a large area of rust, i dont need it, smaller areas, or removing a lot of paint, i use the handle to keep it from "skating" away.

well, you already have the charger.

what i did was buy a refurbished one:
https://www.cpooutlets.com/factory-...ander--bare-tool-/milr2438-80,default,pd.html

they are out of stock right now, but if you are not in a rush you can save some serious money. i wouldn't be interested in the kit batteries. a 2AH is alright, but i primarily use a 4AH (dont have any 6AH's yet.)

you can get one at ebay for about 50$:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Milwaukee-...369340&hash=item4b4452d261:g:TnYAAOSwlgNbBKfc

i bet you can get two shipped for 90$ from him if you make the offer. i have done that in the past with other sellers. i think sellers are willing to accept a bit more discount to move multiple items (since they likely save in shipping) and then the little flags like "two sold in last 24 hours" appear on the listing.

They are coming out with an M12 Fuel grinder/cut off tool this fall. You might need some kind of adapter to use it with your surface conditioning disc's mandrel.

The polisher is one tool that really suffers as voltage drops. I prefer a 3.0 MINIMUM, but 4.0 is better and the 6.0 takes it to another realm of functionality

As for everything else, there's an entire thread about the 2438, please see:
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=257382

The above thread also details how I made a 3" Roloc adapter for mine.

The tool benefits from the greater surface speed of the 3" disc.

I use it from time to time. It is nice to have to hold it steady when you're laying into it or for delicate work.

do you just use the provided adapter for the three inch disks, or did you make something?
I just use the 2" backing pad with both discs, I dont think it makes a huge difference. It helps keep it flat I guess. I have been meaning to make one up

Its just a cut off tool, not a grinder. It's set up funky, the handle position wouldn't allow for practical use as a grinder. Also the guard would prevent it. Youd have to get pretty creative to use it that way, and I think youd put a lot of stress on the bearings by sideloading it

I saw that several year old thread, thanks. I'm not looking to run 3" I like the 2" because of their ability to get into slightly smaller locations than my current 4" setup. I don't, currently, have a need for the 3".

Which is the best tool to remove crusty screws?

I see a 1/4" hex impact drive and a 1/2 hammer drill/driver. I'd use this exclusive for screwing things in and working to take out salty screws on a boat. Hoping to avoid stripping out the heads.

Thanks for any advice.

I ordered 2553-22 M12 FUEL 1/4 in. Hex Impact Driver Kit and got a free REDLITHIUM XC 12V 6.0 Ah Extended Capacity Lithium-Ion Battery Pack for $169. I think that is OK. I didn't want to go reconditioned with one battery for fewer $$$.

Thanks for your input.

Oh, I also ordered a pair of screw removal pliers to have as a fallback. Next screws will have some Tuffgel. 11 year old salt water boat so it gets cut some slack.

FYI, it says I cannot post a photo in this section. What is up with that?

That's pretty decent, but this is what I just got Dad for Father's day. $30 more and you get the Fuel drill also. Still comes with the free 6aH battery

So what's everyone's thoughts on the Ridgid Pro toolboxes versus the Packout system? I have one small Packout box that came with my M12 ratchet, but nothing else yet. The Ridgid's are on sale through Wednesday for $99 for the set of three, versus $250 or more for the Packout. Do the Packout parts organizers keep the parts in their bins if they're flipped upside down? If so, that makes my decision for me, but if the Ridgid is good enough I'd consider it.

Does Milwaukee make really small packout cases? I’m looking for something to hold my fluke 101 with the leads in.

The smallest I've seen is about twice the size you'd need for that but it would work. If you take all the bins out of this it would work. LINK

I have the larger Packout parts organizer that I use for anything from drywall/deck screws, nails (framing and finish), tiny *** address number screws, etc. I've thrown that organizer in the air spinning top over bottom, and everything stays in place.

I feel the strange need to buy a Hackzall. Do I buy the M18 Fuel one on sale for $199 (Would be first M18 anything) or buy the M12 Fuel for $160ish with the extra battery? I'm guessing with the small price difference I should just go M18?

Thanks guys, I think I'm going to just save up and get the Packout.

@yj, I have the M12 and I'm pretty impressed with it, but if you'll be using it for anything more than typical homeowner type stuff the M18 is probably better. My M12 gets noticeably hot after I've worked it a few minutes pruning trees or doing whatever.

Yep. The M12 Fuel Hackzall is huge for only being M12, so "what's the point?" is a worthy question to ask. It's M12 which is convenient for the M12-only users, but the M18 version is far more practical IMHO. A reciprocating saw isn't a tool that I want to make many compromises with.

I would go with the M18 Fuel. Even at $199 for the kit it's still a great deal, I was debating between the M12 and M18 but they had the M18 Fuel kit as a special buy for $149 a while back so I jumped on it.

My original plan was to get the M12 Fuel Hackzall and an M18 Sawzall to cover all my needs, but with the M18 Fuel Hackzall I really don't feel a need to get a Sawzall too.

I just got the M-18 Hackzall the other day. It was a ''Tool Only" deal from Acme. I took it out of the box, put a half charged battery in it and cut a bunch of pallets up for burning. It worked great for that. With some nerve damage, it didn't beat me up like a regular sawzall. I highly recommend one.
