I've used all sizes on mine depending on space I'm working in and amount I'll be using it. You should have multiple batteries in various sizes anyways for this reason. Plus they can be found cheap if you look in the right places. No reason to limit yourself.

Thats kind of what I was thinking. I'd like to get at least one 4.0 and one 2.0. I'm still building my m12 collection.

Thanks for helping confirm my thoughts!

I haven't been in the M12 line very long myself. I got it to complement my vast 18V Ryobi collection. Mostly for the mechanics tools. I've picked up quite a few in the last 3 months or so and even ended up with a drill, impact driver and surge driver because of their compact size. I kept an eye out for battery deals locally and online and ended up with a couple in every size to cover all the bases. If you are happy with a few of the m12 tools, you'll end up with several is what I've discovered.

The 3.0 compact is right between the two, not extended capacity, but I like the compact batteries with the ratchet, not as clunky to me.

If you look for deals the batteries tend to come so you can try different ones to see what fits your use/comfort. Good luck finding a good fit.

For those that have the 3/8 m12 fuel ratchet, which battery do you prefer to use? I have a 6.0 battery for my 3/8 stubby m12 impact but think that might be Overkill to get another one of those for the ratchet.

Should I go with a 4.0 and call it good? Or go with something smaller in size so I can get it into tighter spaces?

Thanks

John

John, the smaller compact batteries work the best for the M12 ratchets. I have the 2.0ah batteries in all mine. They don’t use a ton of power so the bigger XC batteries aren’t necessary.

I primarily use the 1.5 or 2.0 with the ratchet, stubby, Drexel, soldering iron, etc. I will occasionally use a 6.0 with the stubby or always with the hackzall, compressor, and rocket light, but with the smaller tools I want to keep the small form factor.

I use the 2.0 with the ratchet. In fact, I use the 2.0 with almost all of the M12 stuff I have except the jigsaw, hammer drill, and I'll use the 4.0 with the SDS+ rotary hammer that I just ordered.

While I agree with those that say a 2.0 is plenty for the ratchet, I generally use a 4.0 in mine simply because it makes a better base for setting the ratchet down vertically. So in other words, I use a bigger battery for when I'm not using it! :lol_hitti

imo there should be two batteries for m12

3.0 cp and 6.0's (thats mostly what i have with a few 2.0 and older 1.0's

with the new cells i beleive a 7.0 could be made , i wouldnt run out to get them unless they were at least 8.0 AH.

I have had a few nights here where ive run through 3-4 of the 3.0 batteries in my jacket working late into the frigid so cal nights (30's is cold A/F for us)

I got a few of the new milwaukee red lithium lights and extra battery and charger.

the 450 lumen headlamp and rover are my new go to's

There's an adapter you can use to make M18 batteries work with the jackets, it has a USB port on it too I believe. I can fit either a 3.0 or 4.0 M18 battery in the battery pocket. They get hottt and last a long time with one of those.

Might be worth looking into, esp if you already have the M18 batteries that you could use for that purpose

size is the issue. its already in a decent spot but a m18 would need to be the 3.0 also and its way bigger. that wouldnt feel so great rolling on . i work in the field and often under trucks on my back . im sure i could make an extension but not a fan of a leash on me.

i just like the new ones with the built in charger and that you can swap batteries vs having the battery built into the jacket. They really are great for my specific needs. time to go use one now.

The M18 and noncompact M12 are too bulky for the jacket unless you could get the cable to a front pocket and put the battery there.

My personal opinion, give up on the idea of using m18 batteries for a jacket.. itll feel like your walking around with a brick hanging off the jacket. Stick with small m12’s..

I need to replace some Craftsman C2 drills and the useless C2 impact wrench. Thinking about Milwaukee. I normally use an air wrench when I have a lot to do but would like a reliable impact with enough torque to remove rusty lug nuts installed by who knows what gorilla.

I went to the Milwaukee web site and was confused by what seemed like 50 different impact wrenches. Do I really need to wade through all of those descriptions or is there an obvious choice?

For impact wrenches - In the M18 line up (or m12) just concern yourself with the M18 fuel models.. they have different options for the models like 3/8 vs 1/2” drive, or friction/hog ring vs pin detent - but theres 3 main models in ascending torque ratings. The compact, the mid torque and the high torgue.

Obviously, the mid toque is the mid range, and the high torque is the biggest and most powerful.

The newest addition right now is in the m12 lineup, called the m12 stubby - which is actually a little more powerful than the smallest m18 impact, the m18 fuel compact.. just post what you wanna use it for and someone will tell you what model # you want.

Honestly dont even bother looking at anything non fuel. Its not what you want.

Ill go ahead and assume you want something bigger in 1/2” drive to start. You wanna either look at the mid torque in the 1/2” drive option (there is a 3/8” model too) or the high torque model in 1/2” (as opposed to 3/4” option for that model). Whatever you pick you want the friction ring model, not the pin detent. Does that help? Oh - and you dont need the One Key models.. One Key is an app that lets you customize the speed settings, and lock a tool on/off, or help locate a tool.. its honestly something 99% of people dont need.

1/2 high torque , friction ring - https://www.milwaukeetool.com/Products/Power-Tools/Fastening/Impact-Wrenches/2767-22

1/2 mid torque, friction ring - https://www.milwaukeetool.com/Products/Power-Tools/Fastening/Impact-Wrenches/2861-22

Also - the last 2 digits in the model numbers (xxxx-20 / xxxx-21 / xxxx-22) denote what comes with that tool. -20 is bare tool, -21 means charger & 1 battery, -22 means charger & 2 batteries. And i believe if there are letters on the end of the kit model #, it will denote what type of battery. Like ct will mean compact. Maybe there’s an hd (i dont even know) that will come with bigger batteries. There’s also 2 platform of m18 batteries now. Standard m18 that uses 18650 cells, and the newer heavy duty packs that have the newer cells, are they 21700 cells?

Yea ok - i can see how this can get confusing.

What most people will wind up doing is buy a drill and impact driver combo as a kit. That will get you your two most used tools, a charger and usually 2 batteries.. if you wanna add an impact wrench you can do a bare tool to start.

I think Home Depot is still running their holiday deals where you can get a free tool or free batteries with purchase of a combo kit right now..

When it comes to those, there are 3 tiers . In ascending order its M18 (brushed models), M18 Brushless (Brushless models with basically the same power as brushed) and M18 Fuel - (brushless, but more powerful). The impact drivers have a 4th option called the Surge, which is a Brushless oil pulse driver, which is just a different type of impact driver. There is only 1 model in m18, and one in m12 for the Surge.

The main thing to remember is if it says FUEL - its going to be the most powerful option for that specific type or size of tool. And YES - you will be paying extra for the 4 letter word.

Hopefully that makes things a little easier.

These tool companies are at the point that they really need an educational page to help people navigate all the options.

Also - the bigger the amp hour the battery will result in a slight increase in power.. so if you slap a 2.0 battery or a 9.0 battery in an impact - you can even hear the tool spinning faster. Its not life changing, but it exists. Generally though, the smaller packs are better to cut down on weight and size - and the bigger packs for runtime and best power. The 5.0 packs are about the best compromise you can get. At home I dont have any these newer 21700 batteries they recently started selling.. honestly it not even necessary as far as I’m concerned. The retail prices on batteries are crazy. Ebay is the best place to find genuine milwaukee packs, sometimes at even half of retail. For most of the core cordless tools, you dont need anything bigger than a 5.0.. i mean seriously, people were drooling a few years ago when a 5.0 was released as the biggest pack available, and now we’re up to 12.0’s.

The biggest i have at home are 9.0’s and they ONLY get used in my string trimmer and blower.

This is the upside of using the bigger batteries for sure. I should have pointed that out when I said I use the 3.0 compact to avoid clunkiness. It is a tradeoff, I am usually under the hood where the vertical advantage does not matter as much. I will use a bigger one if assembling stuff on a bench where setting it upright is more convenient.

Gee whiz KC thinking here would have been easier just to look at the 5 M12 wrenches and 8 or 9 M18 models in their various configuration then to have to digest all of that :lol_hitti

I’m torn here..
my sister needs a cordless drill. The charger for her little cordless screwdriver disappeared from the condo she owns and rents out in Florida. Its twice ive been there, and she wanted me to do something, but the tool she had was unusable. So shes got a 20v black and decker drill on her wishlist (birthday coming). I am NOT buying that.
I am seriously considering either the cheapest m12 drill / impact driver combo - or buying her 20v Hercules stuff (partly cause i wanna use it.. lol)..

If a Hercules battery goes missing - who cares.. they are $35..
I’m thinking the Herc 20v hammer drill, one battery, drill bits, driver bits, and a bag..
Grr..
maybe just a brushed m18 hammer drill instead?? I dunno.

This thing is just a godsend at this new huge site. The on site lighting and temp power boxes are sparse during this phase.

I'm supremely impressed and get a full day's worth of light with one 5.0.

You know what’s better then the rocket light?
Two rocket lights....

I already have enough tools I take up a good chunk of a big Knack gangbox. And my Ridgid box has been so overloaded along with having a chop saw packed around on top that my Handle gave up the ghost today. Luckily HD swapped it out in 5 mins on my way home

Nah, not Bauer.. Herc is every bit as good as some Dewalt and even the lower Milwaukee stuff it seems. I’m sure the batteries are the biggest difference. She needs a hammer drill, and honestly aside from price, i think the big grip on the m12 stuff will just be off putting to her. With The Herc stuff too, its easy enough to swallow the price to get another bare tool, later for a project. The bare tool prices are dirt cheap for what your getting. (The hammer drill is like $65 bare tool). This stuff will hardly ever get used, but the tools are decent, the prices are good, and the basic stuff is covered in the lineup. HF is also nearby her place there. The feel and overall size/design/impression of the stuff too (like it or not) is way better than Ryobi. This is a person that will likely never own more than 2 cordless tools - so an extensive line like Ryobi doesnt even matter.

Lowes is clearing out Hitachi stuff too. (Changing the name to Metabo) I just had their brushless 18v hammer drill KIT - in cart, for $69.. when i went to check out they wanted $107 for shipping. The non hammer drill kit is even in stock at my lowes for $69 according to the website. But - no hammer function - and again - if a saw is wanted down the road - itll be way to expensive to even consider. Oh well.. i got till Feb anyway, so ya never know.. ill look at the Hart stuff too just for the hell of it.

Oh I see...its a BLUE Dewalt you really wanting

Shhh we won't tell the yellow guys :spit:

But really Bauer has such as extensive line with a lot of tool choices and cripes looks like Milwaukee set up in the photos with lights, speakers, RA tools, impact wrenches etc

Hercules doesn't offer and most likely never will offer any of that
(Hercules IMO is going to eventually be their orphan line)

And by the time you buy the charger separate and maybe a large battery you top a Holiday kit price from Milwaukee, Dewalt or Makita usually

Sure there's always a "good bargain" to be found especially on one off stuff and most all the name tools are definitely adequate. I had Hitachi once, a drill driver and actually I really liked it... was light and powerful but the bit always fell out the chuck constantly loosened with when the brake engaged. Really sucked when you lost your bit while up on a ladder. Alas it got stolen off the job so guess someone else liked it too. :wtf:

All I know though usually the first recommendation always being choose a platform for possible expansion

Never ever was a cordless Ryobi owner.

Oh BTW the M12 brushed grips are much slimmer than the FATBOY Brushless FUEL grips

I started off with thinking i was gonna go with the SKIL 12v stuff..
i may even wind up going back to that and saying the hell with the hammer drill.
I really like the SKIL stuff..

Well I finally got 2 email responses from Milwaukee on my inquiries about how my FUEL Promo contest entry code was ALREADY used before I received it supposedly new in box along with my recent Stubby purchase.

I was told a new entry on my behalf would be manually entered by C.S. and they also took the code letters of the used entry from me (obviously they can computer match a name/address with that and maybe flag it for deletion :dunno: )

Be good enough for me :D

Well my little go round of emails with Milwaukee C.S. over the previously used promo code has been interesting to say the least.

There has been two more correspondences in the past 24 hrs each asking me to resubmit the code at the link provided in the email, I tried once yesterday with the same negative result and just resubmitted the code once again.

Bingo...it went thru this time around. :bounce:

Geez for all this they hassle they really could have just sent me the 10 pc Fuel Combo kit instead...

And the FREE T Shirt :lol_hitti

What happens when you dont put anything on your amazon wish list for Christmas, and you have a father that likes to overspend - who knows you like Milwaukee?

You wind up with a tower of Milwaukee Packout stuff apparently...

Now what I really need is a Milwaukee hot water heater. Cause mine is leaking, and i have no clue what the differences are between all these models on the HD and Lowes site.

I'm really impressed you got a reply at all. Milwaukee is REALLY good at acknowledging your Contact with a "we'll respond within 24 (or 48?) hours"......then nothing. Forever.

I used the M12 Surge to hang some garage cabinets last night for the SIL (incidentally, the Seville Classics stuff is surprisingly nice, seriously) and was impressed.

I've had the M18 Surge for awhile but recently had to warranty it 'cause it would frequently just be underpowered at random.
