I've got one of the earlier Milwaukee 1/2" corded drills (key type) and the chuck is almost unusable. It will barely tighten due to some friction/binding inside the chuck and has ruined more drill bits than I'm ready to admit. The drill itself is great.
Is there a replacement keyed chuck that you'd recommend? My drill is about 25 tears old.

I literally just got mine back from service. The 'new' chuck looks different and seems much better. Maybe they started sourcing from Rohm?

Mine looks just like that one. I believe its from the newer gen of drills. I sent my drill out because the switch was bad and they changed the chuck as well. I can at least say Milwaukee stands by their product. My drill was not used in a professional environment, just heavy DIY.

I used to own a small fortune of Milwaukee 18v stuff, had several trucks and Van's loaded down with everything red 18v I could lay my hands on.
My problem with Milwaukee stuff was a totally the batteries not holding a charge.
I've had problems with dealt chucks on their 20v hammer drills.

I work for a rather large plumbing company, we have roughly 400 Of the newer fuel Milwaukee drills and roughly 50 of them have been sent out for warranty for the drill chuck. I have noticed they started replacing the chuck with the newer style chuck with red strip and warranty claims have gone down

This to me is the most important consequence of a generous warranty. Crappy parts will cost the company money so it is in their best interest to revise those parts. This should have the effect over time of the product improving instead of being value engineered to just above junk like so many consumer goods.

It started because Milwaukee (and others) cheaped out on Rohm, and to a lesser extent, Jacobs, chucks. Apparently it's not so easy to build a chuck that has enough pressure for smaller bits drilling metal.

I've had lots of bits slip in my M12 Fuel drill. I learned that if I tighten it by the switch, they'll slip, but if I grab the chuck and tighten it with the drill off, it's not slipping anymore.

Does anybody know of a GOOD keyless chuck with a 3/8"-24 mounting thread? I still use some older Dewalt drills with the 3/8" mount. I searched on Amazon for that Rohm keyless in 3/8" mount but found nothing. Would appreciate any ideas.

Depending on the clamping capacity you want, you might want Rohm 893351 1-10mm capacity or Rohm 1033051 1.5-13mm capacity. Looks like the 893351 is on Amazon.

Based on this thread I tried the 893352 on my m12 drill and glad I did.

I have 3 Milwaukee M12 drills, all non-hammer. No problems on all 3, chuck runs true, drills don't spin or fall out.

It's not just the M18s. My M12 2403 drill has a horrible chuck. It won't stay tight on the bit. I've hated it for the entire 3 years I've owned it. I really like the rest of my M12 & M18 tools.

Would like to find another chuck if anyone knows which Rohm or other quality replacement to get.

Turns out my 2403 uses a 1/2"-20 chuck so the Rohm part number (893352) mentioned in post 11, fits my drill. Got it installed and very happy with the results. Much much better chuck than the factory POS.

I don't own any Milwaukee tools (despite living in the Milwaukee area) but we have some at work. Yes, the chuck is garbage, pure garbage. Not impressed and will keep me buying the Blue/green brand with the LXT batteries, among other reasons I'll leave out.

Röhm extra80 rv, metal or plastic version, the plastic version is a bit lighter and cheaper.

Are they only using these new chucks on the M18?

Correct, only the 3rd gen (current gen) M18. The 2nd gen (current gen) M12 still gets the familiar Milwaukee chuck (see post 16).

Thanks, was curious since I just got a second gen M12 Fuel hammer drill. Did have a slippage already but I thought it was somehow my fault. The Milwaukee doesn't have the click like my other drills when you tighten down the chuck.

I have owned half a dozen and beat them on 28V like rented mules. Wore the drills out right around them. I am quite aggressive and tend to slam the chuck tight at the last second and it seems to keep them tight.

Not yet experience on the cordless drill, but the chuck on my keyed electric Milwaukee drill got really sticky and difficult to spin. I replaced it with a $15 Jocob from eBay.

So I put a new chuck on it three weeks ago and today the drill died. FML.

I’m sort of over Milwaukee and would love to go Bosch... but I’m too tied to the ecosystem to switch. I guess I’m gonna wait until Black Friday and hope for a deal to replace this thing.

Wow, that *****! Best deal might be on eBay for a bare tool. All the promos for drills are largely kits with impact drivers or larger tool sets, extra batteries, etc. if all you need is a drill, people part the kits out on eBay all day long.

I sent my drill into Milwaukee and it came back with a new chuck and they replaced something else because the RPMS were not high enough.

I've got a Milwaukee M12 2403-22. Great drill but the chuck keeps loosening up and won't hold a bit or driver for any length of time. Any recommendations on a new chuck? A part # would be great!

Have the new 2503-20 drill driver Fuel 12v and I wanted to get a Rohm chuck for it (even though nothing is wrong with mine yet) and wanted to know if anyone had replaced theirs yet with a Rohm, and if so do you have the Rohm number? Sorry if this has been asked before, but I searched the thread and could not find it. Thanks.

Ryan, Milwaukee gives you a five year guarantee - USE IT. 1-800-SAWDUST.

Replacing a poorly designed chuck under warranty does nothing to solve the issue.

The 2403 has a half inch arbor, so you will have many choices.
