Well like most of us, I was introduced to GJ by the 10 gauge garage, I think I saw it first in a magazine. I have mostly lurked around here, I had got kind of serious about working on my old garage, then our landlord decided to sell the house. We had first shot, but that was the beginning of the housing market upswing and I wasn’t willing to pay what she wanted. So we moved into an apartment. Our original plan was to build new, we had even put the small down payment towards the home, and had everything planned out. I had the most awesome 3 car garage in the plans, complete with finished drywall, lights and 220 ran out to it.

Then my common sense came back to me.

We took the loss on the down payment and found a smaller home, but with a smaller and more manageable mortgage. And luckily I did, because this was the end of 2019. We closed on our home on 12/31/19. Just in time for the Covid shitshow to start.

How or why my gut kept telling not to build that new house, I have no clue. God, the Universe, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, something made me run from the other deal.

So we found a home with only 1100 square feet, with a 600 square foot detached garage.

We moved in, I did nothing to the garage except have the slab jacked because it was terrible, and the next year I unloaded my storage shed and piled **** all around the garage. December of 2021 I went to the doctor for some adult ADD issues. I was put on Wellbutrin for this. Well big crazy surprise I had some untreated and unknown depression. From 2018 until 2021 I had gone through a ton of life changing ****. Best friend passed 1/1/18. Later that year I lost my sister. My wife was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease. The company I worked for got bought out and they got rid of my boss during the pandemic. Add the stress of two of my kids getting married a month apart from each other and all the stress that brought, and then the stress of moving and buying a home and it was just a lot to handle. Oh yeah, also forgot to add a job change this year as well just because I didn’t have enough stuff going on in my life 🤪

So at the beginning of this summer I slowly started working on the garage as time and energy allowed.

Then a couple weeks ago I came across the **** Shacks thread, and holy **** I see the almost twin to my garage! It had to be the same kit as mine, only difference is above the garage door I have a overhang. (If anyone knows the actual name for it leave it in the comments. I’m sure there’s some technical name for it 😆)

Reading through his thread I realize that hey, I don’t have to have it perfect right now. Just get it workable and clean so you can actually use it. I'm not sure if it was the pictures of a damn near identical garage, or some term he used (analysis paralysis I think it was) that got me off my *** but whatever it was it lit a small fire under me. I took a week off and cleaned, organized (sort of anyway) tossed stuff, tossed more stuff, and finally had a garage I could actually pull a car into!

So here’s what I’m starting with. Part two of beginning pics coming here in a bit, it will only let me add 10 at a time I guess 🤷🏼‍♂️

The garage had been cleaned, messed back up, cleaned, messed up again over and over. Then I took my week off. I started here:07F6A25F-BAFA-4615-A299-1C5DD00A600C.jpeg

And this was where I finished up. Not as glamorous as most of you, but it was a solid start to my garage being a place I can work on some stuff instead of a place of dreading to go inside because the mess was so overwhelming. Two additions while I was on vacation cleaning this thing was the brown cabinet, and the awesome parts washer. One was helpful right now, the other will help me later.

Looks like a great place. I'd fill those open cells in the block wall with mortar. It'll slow down vermin incursions.
That’s the plan, I’ve already had a couple mouse visitors and I believe a rat as well. Plus a couple birds made a visit when I made a Mickey Ds run, luckily they just hung out and didn’t leave me a mess 🤣

Awesome space
Like you I want a perfect show garage but have to settle for imperfect but useful, and I’m happy with that.
Thank you AldeanFan! Yeah I’d love to someday have this looking as good as Jack Olsens garage, but for now just having it relatively clean and decluttered is a huge win. And seeing how others have done their shops has been a huge help as far as figuring out what changes I want to make in mine. It’s so easy to not even start when you see how perfect some of these garages are, and I still struggle with a bit of ADD so it takes me longer than the average dude.

For instance, the two tables had stuff piled on them. I’d clean one off and put everything in its new home. Then I hit the next table and cleared it off, but if a thing didn’t have a home or if it wasn’t sure if it was a keep or toss item, guess where it went? Yep, right on the clean table. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ So it went back and forth all week. But everything has at least a temporary place until the next purge and it’s at least out of the way and I can do something in there besides pile stuff up.

Man, what a wild ride you've had the last few years. I'm glad you've been able to persevere and restore some level of balance back in your life. The shop is looking good! Now that the difficult part of getting it cleared out is done, the real fun of making the space your own can begin.

I had to laugh when I saw the cracked slab - our garages are twins! How well is the mudjacking holding up? I need to get some quotes to have mine done.

So far it’s been holding up well, but it does have a warranty if it settles again. The original problem was the previous owner didn’t fix the gutter downspouts. An issue I’m trying to work on now is I have damn moles everywhere and I am trying to keep them from screwing up my yard and my garage.

I told you they were twinseys LOL!

Thanks again for the inspiration to just get started now.

I needed that and the attitude DF from roadkill combined:
“Don’t worry about it being right, just get it workable!”

I will go into better detail this weekend of where I’m at and where I think I want to go with it.

Great start on decluttering and organizing. Deciding what to keep and throw out can be the hardest part.

Looking forward to seeing what you do with your garage in the future.

I think the slab jacking will hold up well. I had the driveway and side walks at my old home done many years ago and they hadn't moved at all since the slab jacking when we moved out last year. The guy I had do mine used a concrete mix and pumped it under where the concrete needed to be lifted.

Decluttering is definitely hard for me. I hate to throw out anything useable, but I am at the point where I can’t keep holding on to **** thinking “maybe I’ll use that later, or someone I know might need it”.

So little by little I’m clearing out the junk first, selling the useable stuff, and working on making the best use of my available space for working on cars and whatever other projects I can stick in there.

This weekend I’m hoping to rewire the garage, adding a few outlets and upgrading the original wire, because I have no clue how old they are and I will just feel way better knowing that’s done.

I am also hoping to get some more pictures of the setup out there, but the work comes first lol!
