Over the years of me perusing Garage Journal, I’ve noticed a consistent theme. Full garage gratification is almost always delayed. Timing, weather, location, finances … they all get in the way of finding the end goal of garage Nirvana.

My story is no different. And I hope the writing of my history, and documentation of the upcoming garage build will provide some therapy.

I love cars. This much I can admit. My dad would always take my twin brother and I around the car lots after church on Sundays growing up - I think mainly to entertain us while my mom attended the service. Cars were an easy distraction. So my twin and I - last of seven kids - grew up dreaming of Karman Ghia’s in the driveway - something to love on - something to improve.

As adulthood came - I was fortunate enough to always have at least two spaces in each garage and finally graduated to an oversized three car in my mid-30s. That allowed me to always have a “fun” car - and started me down a path of always hunting for something. We’ve always moved through cars quickly but having one extra space unlocked a side of me that truly was hungry for the hunt. In my first 15 years of marriage, my wife and I had 50 cars come through our life. In the last few, I’ve just stopped counting. Yes, I’m diseased.

About three years ago, we decided to move across town and utilize other passions of mine - house renovation and woodworking. We were moving out of a new construction custom home we designed, into a golf course lot home that needed some work. We love that process, so we jumped right in. My wife’s biggest concern for me was the missing extra spot - yep, going from three to two was enough to make her worried. I saw the nearly 50% cut in our mortgage as a worthy trade off.

IMG_1392.jpg

The first year here was fine, though the lack of hunting was tough. I didn’t have anywhere to put an extra car, so I felt severely cramped. My wife is in real estate and put the feelers out to other agents looking to find a single car garage rental. We were lucky enough to find a month-to-month single car spot less than a mile from the house - easily walkable. Initial problem solved.

The next problem was the missing space to store my tools - table saw, miter saw, lawn equipment, etc. To resolve that, I designed and built a lean-to shed on the back of our current garage. Problem #2 solved.

IMG_0642.jpg

With the extra garage rental, I was able to continue to hunt. I’m a German car fanatic and lean mostly toward 80s and 90s BMWs. My brother is much more mechanically-inclined than I am - I mostly love working on resurrecting the interiors and exteriors from a cosmetic perspective. And last year, I landed a holy grail car for me - a ’94 BMW 850CSi - one of 225 made. Long story short - I found it at a BMW dealer who didn’t quite know what they had. I did a refurbishment and sold it for many multiples of what I paid. Quite possibly the first car sale win I’ve ever experienced.

JON_4303.jpg

That sale lead some heavy hunting - cash in hand. After a couple car purchases, I was bursting at the seams. So last November I signed a lease on a small warehouse space near my house. Just a little over 800 square feet, room for storage and a short drive from the house made it a dream come true. It truly was my GarageMahal.

IMG_1037.jpg

Within a couple months, I realized the only thing better than my current setup would be to bring that same experience to the house. Initially I was skeptical, because I have tried every iteration of garage expansion at the house. Every project hit a dead end. But I jumped head first into Chief Architect to try and design something that would fit the bill. Ultimately I settled on a design that would involve me removing the current shed, and replace it with a new garage and attached shed.

Screen%20Shot%202019-09-12%20at%205.26.39%20PM.png

There would be a 9 foot opening on the right side of our current garage that would lead to an 880 square foot garage/shop. We’d add a side drive (too little setback to do a side garage) for parking our oldest son’s car. The shed would be built onto the side of the new garage, replacing the space lost by removing the old shed.

In the new structure, I dreamed of a roll-up door that would lead to our back patio. During nice days, I could be working in the garage with fresh air flowing in. When we have people over, I could roll up the door and invite people into the space.

Screen%20Shot%202019-09-12%20at%205.28.04%20PM.png

After settling on a design, I sought to find a builder who would take on the project. After a few false starts, I decided to use a builder whose own workshop is two garage doors doors down from my GarageMahal. He’s also a car guy, so it’s not uncommon for us to share a few beers in my current rental, talking about what’s coming and going. As the months pass by, the garage keeps filling up with German goodness.

IMG_1101.jpg

IMG_9456.jpg

Fast forward - as of yesterday, the permit application has been officially filed with the city. The hope is that in a week or so, we’ll be fully permitted and can start digging.

Here are some shots of the architectural drawings:

Screen%20Shot%202019-09-12%20at%205.31.05%20PM.png

Screen%20Shot%202019-09-11%20at%207.35.55%20AM.png

The end result will be a 34x24 garage with a dual zone mini split covering the existing garage and the new space. 12' ceilings. A 6x19 shed will be attached - with a 3 foot roll-up door connecting the two. I’ll also have an 8 foot roll up door that’ll lead out to the patio. Lots of LED lighting, 4 in-ceiling speakers, all my car detailing tools and accessories - it should make for a fun and comfortable space.

I bought a drone to document the build process and took a few initial shots the other day.

Screen%20Shot%202019-09-12%20at%205.34.47%20PM.png

And for those that are similarly afflicted with car disease, here is the current fleet - some of which will be sold to fund the new space 🙂

1972 Ford F250 (Big Green)
1978 Porsche 911 Targa
1988 BMW 325i Convertible
1988 BMW 535iS
1991 BMW M5
1991 BMW 850i (6-speed)
1999 BMW M Coupe
1999 M3 Convertible
2016 BMW 330i Sports Wagon

IMG_1685.jpg

I hope everyone enjoys this build. I’ll be documenting the process daily once we start - which should only be a few weeks away now. I may also share various car projects I’m working on as they happen.

And lastly - if you have a must-have garage accessory - something you couldn’t live without - feel free to share it here.

More as it happens …

I like it! I am a BMW and Porsche fan as well, but don’t have space to collect cars so the 3 at my house have to be drivers (99M3 with turbo, 08M3, 08 535xi wagon). We do have a 73 Bavaria and 74 2002 stored elsewhere but they both need work.

A couple M3s and a BMW wagon - yep, that always works! I've been so close to buying a 2002 several times, but I've never crossed over into that vintage. Would love to someday.

Nice collection. I love similar vintages.
Had to laugh at your "within a week or so we should be fully permitted". Here permits take about 12-18 months....

Yeah - we are very fortunate with our permitting here. With the size of this project (small, according to the GC), it's a quick process. We will see!

Good luck with your build, I look forward to following along!

Thank you!

Great story/intro! Fellow BMW enthusiast here (E46 M3 6MT) who is excited to follow along with your build. Do you have any build threads on any of the various BMW forums for any of your cars? I wouldn't mind checking them out.

Cheers!

Sub'd. Can't wait to see this one. I had an '84 318i back in the day and will be picking up an F30 for myself when my youngest starts driving next year and inherits my current daily. So, anything BMW and garage related has my interest.

Don't bother with the F30. Everything you've read about them is true. Horrible cars throughout the lineup. After 12 years of being a 3-series devotee, the F30 was finally enough to put my wife off BMWs. Do yourself a favor and get an E90 instead. Loads better.

Your thread on here is one of my must-reads - so I'm thrilled you're following along. I'll try and keep the content rolling. As for build threads, I did do a small one for the CSi I got last year. It's here.

Alright!!!! I cant wait to see this thread progress.

Another one of my favs!

I've had my F31 Touring for about six weeks and I absolutely love it. It helps that the PO did literally everything I would have wanted prior to me buying it (lowered, tinted, etc.) but I've enjoyed my time with it.

Great to see another (mostly) German car garage thread. Looking forward to seeing the build.

I've loved watching your build! Thanks for following along.

Oh, this one is gonna be good for me! (Or bad for my mental health, not quite sure yet!)
I'm a sucker for garage build threads that also show cars, and I'm quite fond of BMW, Porsche and Honda, so you hit 2 out of 3 instantly, lol!

Nice collection you've got over there!

Since you mentioned you are going to sell some of the cars, to fund the garage project, which sounds 100% logical, I really don't know how I would manage to sell these:

1978 Porsche 911 Targa
1988 BMW 535iS
1991 BMW M5
1991 BMW 850i (6-speed)

Hahaha - I get the mental health aspect and how spending too much time on here can be detrimental.

The E34 M5 was an accidental buy on eBay (not the first that has happened and not the last) and it needs a little work. I'm going through that process now and since it was the last one in it's likely the next one out. I've refurbed the interior, deleted the SLS and put it on new H&R and Bilsteins and am ready to drop in a Mark D'Sylva performance chip in this week.

The E28 I'm selling on consignment through Alex at Glen Shelley Auto Brokers. I've done a number of deals with Alex and it came down between selling the 911 (which I bought from him) or the E28, which I bought this year on BaT. Ultimately I chose to pursue selling the E28 only because it's an auto. I LOVE the car, and it's a stunning example, but driving the E28 as an auto was not a ton of fun.

The E31 is my one never-sell. It's my 3rd E31 and my second 6-speed (the CSi was my first) and it's probably my favorite car to drive. It's not modern-day fast, but it goes effortlessly. Comfortable interior. And it's a stunning car.

The current "sell to fund the garage list" is:

* E34 M5
* E28 535iS
* E30 Convertible

The problem is I actively look at buying an E28 M5 every day - and it doesn't help that there have been four or five on BaT the last two weeks. I bid one up into the upper 20s the other day. I'm clearly diseased.

I don't dig convertibles, so I'd be ok with selling the E30. And being that the E38 is an auto, well, ok, bye bye E28, lol!

I'd say GO FOR THE E28 M5 NOW!!! But you've got a garage to fund, so I'm keeping my mouth shut for the rest of the garage build. I promise. Maybe.

I’d rather have a fancy garage than a fancy car. The garage let’s me do stuff. I can buy a fancy car later. I could have had a used 997 or 991 911 Turbo instead of the garage I redid 1-2 years ago.

Funny, my mom has an F31 and her car has been great. I will say that my e91 is simpler and I think in the long run I will be happy that its not a turbo car when the miles start to get into 6 figures but the f31 is a great car.

Small (but meaningful) update! Permit has been approved by the city - digging will begin next week.

Based on availability of the subs, hope to be framing by the end of the month and dried in by end of November.

This all means I must pull out the shed I built a few years back. I have the weekend to do it - and the plan right now is to move the components to my brother's house, reconstruct it to serve as a small garage for his Jeep CJ-5.

I'll be sure to take pictures of that process, as I think it'll be pretty neat to see it being repurposed in a new location.

Following. For sure. as long as you don't mind a VW Diesel nut hanging out in the corner watching...

Haha - absolutely. I've owned a number of VWs and loved them all. My last two were a GTi 337 Edition from the early 2000s and a '93 Corrado VR6.

pIcS oF CarS At lEaSt!!!

Should be several at the top of the thread. The only one not shown is the '88 BMW E28 (bought on BaT about six months ago) - shown below next to my twin brother's E30 convertible.

IMG_1395.jpg

It's off getting a manual swap done.

Funny sidenote from yesterday - the GC stopped by to pick up a check for the permit application. As I went to write the check I noticed something interesting -- it was $818.75. My exact birthdate - 8/18/75. I'm all about signs - so I loved that.

Dumpster arrives tomorrow and that's where the existing garage's drywall will go - as well as the stuff from the shed we don't need. And Fall weather arrived this morning!

Quick update as we near the first day of digging - which is now scheduled for this coming Monday.

This past weekend we had to remove the shed I built a couple years ago. It's in the spot behind the garage where we are expanding, so it had to go. We brought it down in pieces so that we could transport it to my brother's house - where he'll reconstruct it to serve as a small garage behind his house.

Here's the shed before:
IMG_0642.jpg

Here's the shed as it's coming down:
IMG_1789.jpg

Here's the current state - ready for some dirt moving.
DJI_0019.jpg

DJI_0022.jpg

The other thing that happened was demo of the existing garage ceiling. That ceiling was roughly 118" and we are raising it where we'll have 12' ceilings for the middle 16' of the garage. The outer edges will rise with the pitch of the roof. The framer who is doing the garage is going to do this work after - moving from one to the next.

IMG_1791.jpg

Beyond that work, I'm slowly fixing up an E34 M5 I bought recently. It's the last one in so it'll be the first one out - once I have things where they need to be. The suspension work is done and I just finished a refurb of the front seats with the ColourLock kit. I've used there products A LOT in the last few years. This was my first Light Silver Grey dye, and it looked great.

Before:

After:
IMG_1758.jpg

I used a combination of their liquid leather, liquid filler and the normal dye kit. With patience, repairing small holes like the one shown in the before photos is totally doable.

Hopefully the next round of photos will involve dirt and concrete!

I don't see any of the photos :headscrat

Looks like you're using Dropbox to host. I've had bad luck using anything but Flickr, but have never tried Dropbox. I would assume it has something to do with permissions preventing the photos from loading here.

I'm liking what I see.

A question about leather seat repairs, if you don't mind. I'm looking at a set of leather seats and they are discounted quite a bit due to a cigarette burn in the passenger seat. I had thought it could be repaired easily as it is only 1/4" tops. How big were the holes in the side bolster of your seat?

That seat looks great. I wish I had known you were ordering a kit. They accidentally sent me 16 tubes of their leather filler and they wont send a shipping label to get them back to them. Haha

I can see them alright!

I honestly can't belive how that E34 seat turned out! Nice to see progress on the garage!

Thanks Ronin! The seat was a fun little project.

I'd say the lower tear was at least a 1" or more. Typically for tears you use the back lining behind the tear, and use filler or their glue to adhere to the lining. That's been the best route for me. I use it a bit like bondo - build up around the area and sand back for best results.

Ummm ... how much for .... oh, three tubes? :) Honestly, I've probably bought more than five tubes of that stuff over the last few years.

These right?

48822083936_1d034f85fe_k.jpgUntitled by Nick Wood, on Flickr

If you can use them you can have them, I would just want my shipping cost back. Pm me if you want them.

Ah - I've actually never used the paste. The product I typically use is this one:

https://www.colourlock.com/all-diy-products/repair-products/colourlock-leather-filler-20-ml.html

I think the difference is that the one I use is considered a DIY solution and the paste a professional product (which I clearly am not) :)

Oh, her F30 was completely reliable. That doesn't mean it was any good. Dreadful steering, questionable interior plastics, too much weight, weird ride/handling balance (hers was an M-sport that oddly came with all-season runflats). And the worst sin of all was of course the move away from the beautifully balanced inline 6 toward a 'corporate' 2.0L inline 4 that is completely indistinguishable from any one of 10 engines in the airport rental car lot. The F30 just really is that clear delineation where BMW completely sold out.

Well ... today is the day. Day 1. Concrete guys arrived at 8:15 and haven't stopped.

I'll get the drone out later today to take some overhead shots, but here is a sneak peak taken from the Arlo. I've literally been watching on the Arlo non-stop since they arrived this morning.
