The New Shop...Finally

I've been waiting a few months to post pics of my new shop.

We moved from New York City to Florida and moved into the new house on July 7th.

The property is 10.21 acres. There's a stable, the house which is 2,800 square feet not including the 623 square foot garage and the most important part, the 1,800 square foot shop (50' x 36'). The previous owner built it as a hangar for a small plane, but there was never a plane in it.

I want to add a loft that's at least half the space of the floor with an enclosed/soundproof space for my drums and eventually get a lift, but as you can see from the pictures, I'm not even unpacked yet. So I need some shelving first.

The cars are a 4 door '57 Chevy converted to a 2 door pretend gasser with a 454/Turbo 400 drivetrain and a '49 Austin A40 with a 355/Turbo 400.

The Jeep is a neighbor's and it's gone now.

Welcome! You have a great shop and room for the loft, lift and probably anything else you want to add. If you get cramped after finishing building it out, I'll happily help you out and you can send either of those cars over to my place. I'd love either, but am partial to the Austin. Please keep the group posted on your progress and include pics. I would also really like some pics of those two great cars.

What a change from new york city. You must be in heaven, 10 acres and 1800 sq ft of shop space.night and day from NYC.
Half of the floor space would be a 9oo sq ft room for drums, seems like a lot to me. After the loft you would have 25 ft of depth from the loft to the front of the shop, might be getting a bit tight if you install the lift parallel with the side walls. I am assuming the loft would be 25 x 36. And if you have 10 acres, you don't need to soundproof anything, who is going to hear you.

No, not just for drums. I'm thinking a loft that's 900 square feet, mostly for storage, with a separate room for the drums. That could be 8'x8' to 12' x 12'.

I need to soundproof. People who live 3/10ths of a mile away have told me, not complaining, just letting me know, that they can hear me playing. So while I used to practice most nights between 11 P.M. and 1-2 A.M. in N.Y., (which I've never done here), I'm stuck practicing for shorter times, during the day, so I don't annoy the neighbors. And I'd like to get back to practicing when I like to practice.

None of the above. Prices are going up around here. We paid the same for this property that most 5 acre properties with really nice houses and pools were going for, but we didn't get a pool. That's going to change. You need one here.

Since we moved in it's been between 92 and 96 almost every day and felt like 5-10 degrees hotter, until about a week or so ago. But New York gets hot too. In fact, a few weeks this summer it was hotter than here. You get used to it. You just need a few extra shirts because they get pretty well soaked with sweat if you're outside working.

But we've got an almost constant breeze here and if you can get into the shade, it makes a huge difference. Unfortunately, this property was pastureland for a long time, so no trees. Except for the palms around the house, a grapefruit tree and 3-4 trees over by the stable, where I almost never go.

So I put up 15 oak trees ($10 each!) and maybe in 10-20 years, we'll have some shade. Which is why...we need a pool.

Thanks for the link. So is the Austin still more or less sitting until you finish up the Chevy as indicated on the link? Just curious.

The Austin is done except for paint. I've got HOK silver metal flake that I bought about 3 years ago. The green primer needs to be sanded and resprayed. You're supposed to paint on that within, I think, a couple weeks, and it's been on for more than 2 years.

The Chevy is also more or less done except for finishing off the bodywork to close up the rear door patches and paint, which will only be red primer anyway.

I've been driving them both down here. The roads are great. The Austin was almost useless in New York with all the potholes because it rides like a steamroller. I'd have to come to a dead stop and coast over a lot of the holes, (local streets only - no highway driving because at about 45 mph, the front end starts to come off the ground). I had a 3-5 mile limit on how far I would drive it. Down here I can go anywhere, (local streets again ), except for the unpaved roads and seriously, there are a few of them, like the road out from my place, that are more drivable than some of the streets were in New York.
