Hi everybody, I have been looking at all of your garages on here for the past few years and thought it was time I shared mine. It started back in August of 2013, I have been working on it for a long time but I have done almost all the work by myself on weekends when I was back from college. I will continue working on it and updating it as I go.

This was the start of my journey back in 2013, I poured a 14'x16' thickened edge slab.

The next weekend I started building the walls out of 12' 2x4s

I then started to build the loft to help tie my tall walls together

Then in January 2014 I brought home a new project car, a 1976 Austin Mini

Because I knew I wanted to paint it I needed a new compressor

After adding the compressor and car to the shed I knew I wanted to go bigger

So I cut two trees down to make some space for an addition, and one was leaning over my house so I took care of that one to.

Then I had to bring home the excavator to get rid of the stumps

it made quick work of the stump so I took it to my back yard and cleared and grubbed

A few weeks after we took out the trees we had a bad wind storm with 80mph wind gusts that took out 14 more trees for me. Luckily only one small tree top came into contact with the shed.

My pump house was barely missed as well

The power would be out for the next few weeks after this storm so I worked on stuff that didnt require power like the plumbing of my airlines

I later decided against an inwall pipe setup and would redo it

I then started on the flatwork for my adittion

The new addition would add 14' x 20'

Ofcourse I wanted a separate space to paint cars so I added on a lower level of 14' x 16'

Poured the concrete in these two section because I didnt have enough in one truck to the two 14' x 20' sections.

My cousin Mike helping me with the power trowel.

A week after the concrete was poured I was sent to town to pick up a trencher for work so I swung by the lumber yard on my way home

I started building the first 11' tall wall out of 2 x 6's

Stood it up

Built the rest of it and stood it up

My stack of lumber down to one board

Out of lumber I started working on the form for the rest of the concrete

Poured the concrete

At this point I decided I did not want a multi level roof

I was able to lift the roof off with a combination of the four offroad jacks and the forklift

I placed 2x4s around the outside of the building to keep the roof from tipping off

I raised it 2 feet

All raised up I got back onto the addition

Another expensive trip to the lumber yard

Recycled metal from a pole barn I tore down about 8 years before this project started.

My truck maiden voyage into the Shed

I would then shift my attention back to the inside of the shed

Built a shelf in the loft to stash my bikes under

The garage door track and supports were in the way of the stairs so I built this shelf to attach the track to and shortened it

Built the stairs

Decided to keep going into the upper loft

Finally put a little bit of siding up

My significant other also decided we should add a window left over from a project of mine so we added this.

I then started the re plumbing of my air line system

At this time the wild fired in Washington were taking off and I decided to bring home some equipment to protect the property .

Thats all the time I have for now, will finish catching my project up later

What a fun build! Can't wait to see it come together. I know you said no plan...but do you think you'll heat or insulate it?

I plan on insulating it, I have more catching up to do with the pictures but I started insulating it about a week ago. I also bought a cadet 5000 watt heater to heat the big portion of the shed. I didn't mention above but I also ran pex in the first 14x20 slab I poured if in the future I decide to go that route

For christmas I got A craftsman tool chest and I have been buying foamfit organizers a few at a time since and have finally organized my chest. I am only missing a few sockets out of my set that I did not even know I was missing until I got the organizers.

I am also a sucker for a good craigslist deal so I picked up a 3/4" drive socket set for $100

My American Express credit card points well spent

I ended up with a few extra bags of r21 insulation from a pump house I was building so I used them up here in one wall

Of course I had to stick my hoop back up

Then I got excited about closing it off and began plywooding the outside again

And this is were I left off last week, I plan on finding a garage door in the coming weeks

I like your build here. So I take it with the "no plan" title, you kinda built this from an idea in your head? In other words, not really from a plan on paper? Sorta sounds like some of the projects I've done.:D

Anyway, I like how your project sorta keeps growing. I almost expected you to start adding onto the right, ending up with a huge building with a peaked roof. LOL

Nice start, I like your choice of project car.

Could you give more info on the air system especially the 5 vertical pipes. Thanks.

The compressor is a Dewalt 5HP two stage 80 gallon unit, I have a second tank I add for more reserve witch is 30 gallons and I use 1/2" hose and quick connects so I can use it as an air pig as well. The compressor is connected to a 3/4" ingersollrand regulator and then pipes from the room the compressor is in with 3/4" black pipe to vertical pipes. The 5 vertical pipes serve a dual purpose, The first is to add distance to my air line before my water filter, I was told I needed at least 50' or piping before the air filter, and the other purpose is to catch water before it gets to the filter, the water collects on the 1 foot drop legs and drains out via the valves. I have yet to have to drain water out of my water filter, even when I was painting so I think the air drops are working. This was my first real compressor so if anybody sees something I can improve upon please let me know. Here is a more clear shot of the bottom of the system, at the tops they just 90 over and then 90 back down.

That is the master plan I just have to decide what I am going to put over there first.

What's with the random doug fir posts sticking up?

Bill

If you are talking about the ones on the porch they were for a covered porch, but I'm saving for a house to put where my trailer house is. If you are not talking about the porch than I don't know

It is interesting about being on the reservation.

Is it reservation land?

Do you own or lease it?

Do you have to be a member of the tribe to live there?

How does all that work?

It is reservation land, I have a renewable 2 and a half acre lease on it through the tribe which I pay nothing for since I am a tribal member. Since I am improving the property I am in the process of buying Private land on the reservation to trade for my lease land. You do not have to be a member of the tribe to live on the reservation. I do not have to pay a property tax, but am unsure if non tribal members have to. I file taxes just like everybody else, the only difference is I do not have to pay sales tax on items delivered to the reservation.

Most of the construction work we do if for the tribe, Here is a picture from this past summer on a waterline project we worked on.

I am not sure I understand the reference, I have been told I look like the Unibomber when I grow my beard out but I am not pictured. Lol

The cabin the Unibomber lived in the woods up north looked in style the same way your original building looked. Google it, it's been saved someplace in full scale.

I can see some resemblance, I guess I could have made a catchy unibomber title but I sure it would offend somebody somewhere. Thanks for the history

Looks good, I am curious if you "plan" to expand or are going to stick with that size?

I would think with that setup you could keep filling in, go to the other side and roof-peak down, etc.

Having the shooting boom forklift has got to be a great thing :)

I hope you get some siding up soon. Plywood does not weather well and will start to delaminate.

I actually papered it the bay before I went on vacation, normally I would not have even used plywood since I am using T-11 siding but I have not bought a single sheet of plywood for this entire project. They have all been left over from various projects up to this point, I am down to 4 sheets now though. I will buy the siding soon when the ground freezes back up, last time I drove the forklift through there I almost didnt get it back.

I plan on expanding, pretty much all the way around the original 14'X16', The main reason I didn't extend it that way yet is there is some more difficult trees to remove on that side which have since then started leaning away from the shed from windstorms. The extended reach forklifts sure have there place. We have to Terex and the old Lull but most of the time they are out on jobs making money for us. I am blessed to have access to all the equipment I have used so far.

Question for the OP.
In the following photo, I see where joist hangers are used to attached joists to the ledger.

But I see nothing but nails attaching the ledger to the studs.

Did you add lag bolts later?

I used 4" rugged structural screws, the package said lag bolt alternatives, but I will most likely go back and add lag bolts since the space is a lot more usable with the additional height.

It's a convection heater, I have not tried it out yet since I don't have a garage door, I got quotes today on different doors ranging from $1200-1700, now I just need to go pick one out and then the first thing I'll do is hook up the heater

Got my garage door all ready for a tuesday install, just when I finished they called and said I was postponed 1 day.

It took the installer about 2 and half hours to install it, it is a steel backed r10 door. I didnt get the garage door opener because it was 600 dollars for the wall mount liftmaster from them so I ordered it online for $315.

I took this picture while the installer was inside, he cleaned up his trash when he left

I also got the seats mounted up in my car and remounted the turbo after all of the awd mods we did

Having my car at my friends shop really makes me want a car lift but I dont like the idea of something permanent so I am liking the idea of the maxjax portable lift. either that or built a separate addition for the car lift.

Very cool. Spools up quick considering the remote mount. must be a blast with awd.

Actually I have yet to drive it AWD, the videos were from when it was just FWD tuned on 8lbs of boost. We are a few weeks away from it running and driving in AWD. The E85 helps ny turbo spool a lot quicker with all that extra fuel burning comes more exhaust.

Anyways back to my shed, I got my lift master 8500 opener today and got that mostly installed. Ran into a problem when trying to close my door stops 3 inches from the bottom and goes back up and then blinks 10 times. I then reset the travel limits and attempt to set the force parameters but while setting it does not close all the way. I am thinking the spring is to tight, any other thoughts?
