Woot, we have heat, well we will have when I knock up a grille for the actual fire to sit on in the woodburner and ashpan for it. The flue went in today, straight up therough the very crappy tiled roof. Hopefully it should be watertight. We did light a very small fire in it even without the grille and ashpan and had no leaks in the flue and even with just a few pinecones and small sticks it heated up very quickly and the stove stayed warm for ages. You could feel the difference in the garage even then. I might try and get the grille etc welded up this week. My knees hurt from kneeling on a ladder up the roof whilst sorting out all the flashing etc. Pictures to follow tomorrow. Its not in its final location which will be the far end bay when I get the floor relaid and the roof redone next and levelling the stove was a ***** as the floor slopes every which way so its up on an assortment of bricks and old floor tiles.

Here are the pictures.

From the front, you can just see the chimney poking above the ridge line, building regs state it has to be 600mm above the ridge.

From the back you can se how bad the roof is. Rain cap, then the drip ring and then the high temp silcone rubber flashing, edges of the tiles pointed with mortar.

Inside, excuse the mess.

I need to get to the steel suppliers and get some bar to make the grille out of.

The romantic hills of central Umbria, Italy,
My God, Phil, that cow barn is turning beautiful! Job. Well. Done. :)

...f inally, a woman from New York who spoke French, in the back of the now 10 person long line, said "let me try" and said what to my ear was the same word I'd been saying all along, and the pharmacist did a forehead slap! "Oh you mean vitamins", he said. "I couldn't understand you, your accent was so strong!"

That's the problem we have in Italy - when we lived (and now go back to visit) in eastern Umbria (or as the locals lovingly refer to it, the middle of (deleted) nowhere)... the Italian spoken there is somewhat formal and "old fashioned" compared to Venezia or Roma (or even Firenzie, 120 KM away)... so when we go to "the big city" people laugh - not because we have an American accent, but we're Americans with an apparently a 30's Italian accent.

On the other hand, because of this I've made a number of friends there - usually in their 80's who say we remind them of when they were kids in "the good old days"... when a certain well-known Italian leader "got the mail delivered and the trains ran on time"... :scared:

The locals around my holiday home in France also have a very strong accent, totally different from the French I learnt at school. It is best described somewhat cahritably as strongly "country" LOL

First proper fire last night, had to open the garage door though as some plum has painted the thing with normal gloss house paint and the top started to smoke and got a bit stinky. Ahh well, it'll either harden up or burn off, if it does the latter I'll repaint it with stove paint. Got nice and warm in there though and drew really well, in fact I might need to fit a damper in the chimney to slow it down a bit.

You will really notice it when it gets windy.

Yeah, It surprising really as its not the worlds longest flue by any means about 12 foot in all. That said a damper is only about a tenner.

Got fed up with my amp getting covered in dust and cack and having to put an old plastic bag over it when not in use so yesterday I had a rummage through my scrap wood and found some contiboard that used to be the shelves in the built in wardrobe in our bedroom, some time with a few power tools later and one shelf converted into a cupboard! Hinges were out of my stash of salvaged hardware, handle was one of a bulk pack of IKEA cheapies I bought for something else. I had the repro Michelin tin sign knocking around so shoved it on the front to brighten it up. Just waiting on a couple of ball catches to secure the door and a couple of angle brackets to tie it to the wall at the top as the shelf brackets are bending a little under the extra weight. I also put a soffit vent in the side to let any heat out. Just looking for a DAB tuner now. Should keep the worst of the muck off things.

I also have a damper to put in the chimney when I get a few spare minutes (yeah right!)

Had a tidy up in the back and propped my garage couch up on some blocks temporarily, will be making a proper frame for it with storage underneath at some point. Hung the old Michelin sign up too. Had a good tidy up and started to put together the first gate for the veg garden.

The round knobs on the bottom of the wood stove should adjust your draft - no need for a damper in pipe.

Really like the shop, I do remember shops when younger with wood stoves in them awesome to work in. Nothing worse than freezing cold temps and trying to work on an engine when non of the sealants work and/or can't get the surface prepped good.
