That's the beauty of it all - get the tools up and running and they will help you finish the garage:)

Those EXL wheels are the shiznit. They are not cheap, but they are worth it. Love mine. To me, they put that perfect finish on exposed metal.

Haven't checked in on this thread in quite some time. Impressive. You sir, are a man who knows what to do with your retirement. The shop interior is coming together really, really well. If you haven't already you might think about posting a picture to the "Garages at night" thread. Given the setting I bet yours would look very cool in a night shot.

Thanks for sharing your garage journey with us.

Thanks a lot rogsmart! Retirement is a blast if you do it right! I'm having too much fun:).

I did post in "Garages at night" (post #49 on this thread). Not a great shot but it's "ok". I'll do another one when I'm feeling more artistic.

tb, it's been a while since I had a chance to catch-up on your progress. Wow, those cabinets look great and that workbench will be strong enough to put a car on. The lockers look great. Lyon is a good brand and the key looks like they may have come from a country club or the like that issued keys.

Those vintage tools are a perfect score. They could probably earn you a 'You ****' award, but I wouldn't do that to you. Maybe clean them up a little and get the tables shiny again and see if the rest needs any more attention or if they stay original.

Keep up the great work. And, thanks for all the comments on the SLH.

Thanks Wingnut. It's a lot of fun fixing up old "junk". Does your screen name have to do with airplanes? If it does then I'm a wingnut too. We have a small airport here (not too small, 5000' main runway ex-WWII training field) that is home to dozens of homebuilts, mostly RV's and some Glasairs. I got to fly a Glasair. What a hoot! I'm partial to the RV series. I wanted to build one but I don't think that's gonna happen. I have a license but no plane:mad:.

I used to work in a custom fab shop (lotta stainless and other cool stuff) and they used the EXL. I forgot all about it until you mentioned it. I ordered it from Reid through Amazon. All things considerd it was the best price I found. Here's a pic of the bandsaw table. I guess I could polish it some more but it's nice and smooth as is. Still gotta clean up the groove.

On another note, I scored my first bunch of used fence boards so I can continue to steal Gearbanger's ideas. Dang CL again! I got 'em on a jobsite from a fence contractor so I have an "in" now. He's doing a bigger job (180 lft) starting Tuesday and he's gonna call me and let me know how much of it is usable.

Now I "get" to go over to my other neighbor's and help her split wood:(. Oh well, what goes around comes around.

Boards before pressure washing.

That table is looking great! You could leave as is, or finish with the EXL wheel, totally up to you.

Glad to see some old tools getting new life! Warms the heart:)

You're a good man, tinbender. A real gentleman to help split wood.

Table top looks nice!

Yes, I am plane crazy, thus the Wingnut name. (65 is for the '65 Bus). I have my SEL, but haven't been up in years. I started going to Oshkosh in 1977, although I've missed the past 10. I try to hit Sun-N-Fun every year. I, too love the RV's. I have the preview plans for the RV-7A. But when the Bus gets done it may be the Sonex or 7A that I build. Hopefully.

I just have SEL also and like you haven't used it in a long time. Man, I'd love to get to Oshkosh sometime. The airport here in town (Arlington, Wa.) is host to a yearly EAA fly-in that is (or was, not sure) the third largest after Osh and Sun'n'Fun. I DO go to the Reno Air Races every other year though. It is truly mind-blowing to see a P-51 @over 500 mph a 100' off the ground!

Great set-up! My dad use to work in Arlington. I'm from Edmonds.

How the heck did you find someone to cut down a tree for $50?
Must be a buddy. Good score.

Thanks! Small world, I grew up in Edmonds. The tree guy was referred to me by a friend who is a log trucker. He came over to look, asked me where I wanted it and landed it perfectly. Then he bucked to a point where I could get it with my 20" Stihl. I asked him how much and he said "fifty bucks". I had $200 in my pocket. He said "you can pay me more if you want but $50 ain't bad for 20 minutes.

I did the first outside wall of my office the last couple days. These boards are 1X6's (real 1"X6") boards. I stole the idea from gearbanger's project:). I know about the flamability issue but I'm only going around the office, the bathroom and the wall behind my shop desk. I caulked all the joints the block air infiltration. The big knot holes I put some black metal behind. I was gonna wait to post until after I got the door painted and hung but what the heck. I really like how it turned out:D

I picked up a "couple" more boards from the same fence guy today. These are 1X4 (nominal) so I'll have to change as I go around the corner which is ok as you can't see them together unless you were standing where I took the last pic. I also intend to extend the walls up to hide the storage above the office ceiling after I get it sheeted. Yeah, I know the weiner dog (Thelma) is fat but she goes down to the old folks next door everyday, goes in through their cat door and they spoil her rotten!

Looks good, good use of GJ inspiration. On to the weener dog, my goodness she is "fluffy" for the breed. Looks like a cross between a Pit and a pony keg...hah, I kill mr.

Sweet! I've been impressed with gearbanger's creative re-use of scrap wood and I am glad the idea is catching on. It looks great! Thanks for posting the 'progress' photos.

Tinbender thats looking great! I think that using that wood is just fine. Just about every BBQ restaurant here in Texas has it inside. Just don't weld up against it or any wall for that matter.

And about that dog, I guess you don't have to worry about him being blown away in a high winds.

Thanks Nighttrain. I think all the wood in those places is treated with Flamex or something similar. It's a bit expensive for me. The welding/grinding area will be a long ways away so I'm really not worried.

TB66, looking good; instant 'shop patina'! Now, all you need is the aroma of alder burning in a pot-bellied wood stove. Shouldn't be hard to find either in your neck of the woods.

P.S. - Speaking of 'pot-bellied', when I saw the picture of your pooch, I did not think of the wiener dog breed, more of the Polish Sausage variety, I would think! :lol_hitti I hear 'Bag Balm' is good for those pesky belly brush burns!

Hey guys, go easy on the dog, K9's have feelings too, you know!!! :)

You are making great progress here, tinbender. And now you have some more toys to restore and play with.

The wall boards look awesome mounted in a horizontal fashion. It reminds me of the old grainery room upstairs in our old dairy barn that my brother, the neighbor buddies, and I had converted to a clubhouse as kids. (NO GIRLS ALLOWED!) Thanks for the memories.

Anyway, keep up the good work and keep the momentum going.

Bag balm! I grew up on a dairy and I remember the rusty little tins of bag balm we kept in the milk barn...I think they sell that stuff in little containers for gals to keep in their purse. Shopnut, where was your dairy?

Thanks a lot Ompha! I don't know about the stove. I heat my house with wood so I think I just want a thermostat in the garage:). That bag balm works pretty good if your hands get all cracked in the winter.

Yeah, the poor dog has spent the last four nights at the neighbors. I think she's too embarasseed to come home!

Thanks for the nice comments Shopnut. I really enjoy fixing up the old tools. Derusting, painting, polishing etc.

Sometimes I think we should have kept the NO GIRLS ALLOWED rule (j/k Mrs. Tinbender).

I spent about 4 hours last night pulling nails. Ended up with 385 boards. That's 673 sq. ft! Way more than I need. The sun is out so pressure washing today:(.

DSCF3939.jpg

Excellent. That's a lot of work done! I had to pull nails from some 4x4s out in the backyard not too long ago. Takes forever haha. Let's see some pictures of some fence boards once you are done with the power washing. I bet they will look AWESOME!!! Keep it up man!!!

I got 225 boards pressure washed yesterday. They look pretty good. Only 160 more to go:(. Actually I kind of enjoy the process. Instant (all day) gratification:).

Here's a comparo:

Tinbender the Miter gage looks great and I dont think you can over restore an old tool :D. I was drooling over some pictures last night of an old Monarch lathe that had been redone in just the right color for my garage and it was beeeeeeeutifull :D.

Lookin' good! A lot of guys will give these old tools the special treatment and make then even nicer than they were brand new. Not that there's anything wrong with that.:D

Thanks Rick. It's fun to make things shiny:). I'm not a purist by any means. If I was, my ChevyII would have to have a six cylinder and a powerglide:(. Not gonna happen! Unlike the table saw it will be an original color though.

Thanks Mr. Leader. That's my goal. I picked up some off-the-shelf Hammerite the other day. A few parts are ready for paint. Color TBA.

Paul,

That's COOL!!! That wall looks awesome! I think you should take some 'perspective' shots around your shop, especially once the wall is completed. Its gonna look killer.

TB66, the wood looks superb on the wall, and even better, the material was free! There is something very therapeutic about using a pressure washer; almost like instant gratification.

My vote for the trim color is the same shade of red used elsewhere.

As Cheech & Chong might have said - "Lookin' G-o-o-o-o-o-d-d-d Man!"

Thanks Dave!! Not sure what you mean by "perspective". Like a walk around to show how it all ties together? If so, maybe I will. The far end bay has become kind of a catchall for everything I've needed out of the way. It's going to need some good storage solutions!

Thanks navel gazer!!

There IS something therapeutic about that pressure washing. I'm gonna go on a pressure washing binge. 3 rail fence for painting, sidewalks, patio etc. Power wash the world!!!

I initially was going to do red for the trim but my wife, the color guru said she thought it would be a bit much. I going to do some red and experiment. I've got plenty of wood:D.
