So we currently rent and the garage is a 26'x26' if I remember correctly from the last time I measured. It is busting at the seems, I seem to have a problem collecting projects and the pile keeps getting bigger...

I have reorganized once, it worked well for a while I was able take care of the projects and only had to pull out the wifes jeep to accomplish them. Then we bought a boat and now the jeep lives on the street. We don't have enough outdoor space to store the boat and can barely fit both vehicles in back and can only access 1 side on either vehicle when parked back there.

Since we bought the boat I've been having to walk around it or move it out by hand for access to my shelves and that side of the garage, moving around the boat, 2 motorcycles, a 3 wheeler, pushmower and 200+ soap dishes...My last 3 projects which involved me working moving the boat or working in the driveway has caused the pile of tools to end up in a few spots.

Been doing alot of reading here about organizing and getting rid of **** I don't need. It's my weekend the next 2 days and I was planning on finishing a step stool for my mom then get going on organizing. Well I got fed up tripping over ever thing and never finding the tool I needed so I decided to start making the mess.


Here's what I started with:









Kind of hard to see but along the back wall below the fan was a 2' wide benchtop I made when I first moved in thinking it would be a good added work station. It held all my old vehicle parts well...:lol_hitti




And here is where I ended up after a couple hours with help from the wife. Going to sell 1 of the tall file cabinets and the small one. I plan on using the other for garage storage for now and see how it goes. I tossed a bunch of **** into the truck bed and its going to be disposed of. Finally getting rid of the soap dishes, some bad wood. Planning on some a wood rack over the motorcycles opposite the shelves. Getting rid of the smoker and cleaning and putting the tools away and clearing floor space tomorrow. Hopefully I can get it done and get the steps finished tomorrow.











I consider this the winter setup, boat and everything tucked up nice and tight to the wall. The wife can fit the jeep inside then and I should be able to squeeze the truck in for any urgent repairs. Will leave it this way till I can get everything sorted then will adjust from there for the rest of the summer. I would like to find a better spot for the 3 wheeler to give me more access to the peg board but I'm not sure where. Planning on pulling the table saw out of the packed shed and moving the pushmower into there. Unfortunately there isn't any room for anything else in the shed.

Hmmmmmm. I would seriously consider the actual value of the boat. What does it really cost to have it there and what do eventually hope to get out of it?
There are times when owning something negatively impacts the rest of your life to the point that it's just not worth it.

If you spend 20 days on it during the summer, how many days of inconvenience did it cost you to have it in the garage?

:willy_nil I got them for free from a hotel construction site.

Figured I could try and sell them and that never happened the just took up a lot of space

Very valid points, I really appreciate it and it's nice to hear from someone else. Because I've thought the same .

But we are hoping to move soon, we are doing the house search now but what we want isn't out there right now. So I'll put up with it for now and dsee what happens.

I probably will put it up for sell, I don't really have the time, hoping I don't lose to much on the deal but It's been in the way too much.

There is a shed on the property, it has the trailer that goes with the one motorcycle, most of the yard tools, snowblower, and large camping gear.

Most of what I have I use, all the tools I have have been bought for use. I don't have a lot just sitting around as far as tools and such. The 3 wheeler was something I got a good deal and and it's turning into more of a headache than anything.

All the other **** is worth keeping its either camping gear or winter emergency gear.

Why? I have a few reasons to get rid of it as well as keep it but with this setup I will have usable space to do what I need. The boat is something that makes getting out and doing something with the family easy. I do wish I had a better storage location though.

You need another boat and 2 more motorcycles.

Since its a rental, I would suggest building some storage cabinets on wheels so you can take them with you later.

Can you put the boat in the backyard under a tarp? Getting that out of the way will go far to allowing you to actually use your garage. Also maybe ask the landlord if you can build some shelving. Getting stuff off the floor goes a long way.

Is a storage unit for the boat and other things not fiscally feasible? Seems like $60 for a storage unit would clear up a lot of valuable space.

One bike is the one i bought to learn to ride on, good bike and it decent shape. The other is my dad's it was givenon to me when he passed.

I was told they don't care about the garage so shelving is a possibility but I've found the shelves I already have tend to collect more clutter than anything else.

And the widest access to the backyard is 4ft.

I have thought about it. But if I'm going to spend that money I might as well sell the damn thing and put that money into savings for a newer boat. So not sure as of yet.

The change I believe will allow me to do the things I need do now, basic vehicle maintenance and small wood working projects. All of which happen only in the summer unless it's extremely urgent.

Here is where is sit currently.





A few things to go up into the rafters and move the 3 wheeler outside and tarp it the I should be good and I can start the deep sort on the shelves and toolbox

$10 worth of hardware made one 10 foot section into a nice large gate on our chainlink fence. Not that I had to ask a landlord (we own the house). Your landlord will probably OK the change? Unless you're landlocked by neighbors on either side.

Our lot is on a corner.

Neighbors. Both have fences and the narrow point is actually due to a tree and the garage. If the tree were gone I could put the boat there.

If I had the space it would be stores outside. I don't so I will make do with what I have. Since I have lived here I've only been able to put one vehicle in at a time so this helps achieve that with the boat inside.

Just about got the steps done today, the final coats of stain will be done tomorrow so this coming weekend I should be able to get the sort in full swing. And I've got vacation coming up with only a couple small projects planned and some boat time so hopefully I can get a good start before it gets to cold out.

As you looked at the garage from the main door they were on the left in a box next to my scrap wood box. Took up 2'x3' approx, in the one pic they are right behind the propane tank next to the boat tongue

Kinda slacking this weekend. Finished up a few things didn't get much done in the garage, I did manage to get the wood rack made and 2 more sets of lights put up and some more random things put up.

Heres the would rack right now, letting the adhesive I used dry and then I'll get some better pictures. I stole the idea from Orionrising in the whats on your wall thread. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=5937556&postcount=1357




Here's a before and after of the lights, it doesn't look like much but it's so much better still lacking on the garage door side but I don't do much over there, It does give enough light to do basic work by .

And finally excited to get the truck back in after a few months of not being able to, and even with the boat in there I didn't loose to much space.



Hopefully tomorrow I can get the high pressure power steering hose changed out again.

Hi there, this reminds me of my garage, too much stuff but none of it are things I want to get rid of. Keep plugging away you are doing a good job and it really is a milestone to get your truck in there!

Well it has been some time, last September the boat moved to my mom's for the winter the bikes moved up against the front wall and we were ready for winter and could then fit both vehicles in and was ready for winter.

Then I bought 2 project cars and we had even less room, sold them this spring and then the boat went this summer. All to help us afford our next project.

This is our next project.

We close on Tuesday and will finally be owners, it's not perfect, smells like horse **** and needs someone to take care of it but we are ready (so we think)

What will be the shop portion is the man door and overhead door on the right.

They are 2 separate rooms, the man door leads to the tack room and from there into the shop. I believe the tack room is about 20x15 and the shop is 30x20. I lost all my measurements from the first viewing back in Feb.

The concrete is in bad shape, the place has that barn stench but I am excited to get in and have a insulated space to work in this winter. It has 100amp subpanel already, it just needs some love.

Here are some pictures, I'm a pretty ****** photographer so you get what you get.
I may just continue this thread or start a new. Will decide once I get to working on it. Just felt like sharing with like minded folks.
