WOW....JUST WOW!!!!! I haven't visited this thread since '14 and to be truthful, I forgot about it. I can't believe the transformation. Absolutely fantastic for sure. I'd bet the tax man will invite you to dinner and he pays. Everything you have done has just been over the top. So much so that I don't know what improvement is better....inside, outside of the house, the shop, the landscaping, the.......

You have done very well sir. And you have a place to really be proud of. I almost imagine that it's hard to get company to leave once they get there.

And again...Just Fantastic!!!!!:thumbup::thumbup:

Thanks for the kind words! My family and I are enjoying our home immensely. Looking back, it's kind of a miracle my wife and and I are still together, luckily we saw eye to eye on most of the major decisions and were able to compromise on the rest ("yes dear" worked well...lol)

There really isnt anything we regret, and only a few very minor things we would have done differently.. We went way over budget, but we followed our dreams, and with the help of some great contractors we were able to achieve them. There are so many garages that inspired me on GJ, and I'm still checking out all the great ideas that everyone shares here.. Just in case...LOL

Just went through every page, incredible transformation!

I moved into my dream home this summer where the wife and I plan to live the rest of our lives. There's nothing wrong with our place the way it is but we are already looking at different ideas to upgrade the property in the future. Just need to wait for the kiddos to move out in 16 and 18 years!! Haha

Beautiful place you have!!

Are your pine walls finished or unfinished? I am wanting to put a T&G pine ceiling in my barn, but the cost of pre-finished is pretty high (alternatively the time to finish 1800 SF of wood would be high as well). If unfinished, has the pine darkened much since you installed it?

When I was building it, I had a grand plan of finishing the T&G.. however as more stuff got up IN to the space, that became less and less important. I figure, its a barn and a workshop.. just let it age. It has darkened some, if I take something off the wall that has been there for a while, there is an outline, but for the more part its still a nice color.

I took these yesterday..

As you can see in the last pic, the clock has left its mark.. I figure some day when I'm long gone someone will be looking at an old barn, wondering what was up on the walls...:D

Wow. Would love to see how the landscape has aged in the last 2 years.

Thanks.. It was done as well as I expected..Most are growing with a vengeance, but we have we've lost a few of the plants, there were over 400, some to natural causes, some to the two pups we got...:) Most of the beds now have an invisible fence now that keeps them out, which helps. The grass had taken a hit from them... some brown spots, and places they continually run. We have a company that fertilizes every few weeks, that had helped. I was told a new lawn can take up to 7-9 years before its totally established, so we'll see.

Here a few pics from last year

and the two trouble makers...:bounce: They're actually great, and they run and play all day long, and insist on being where I am, if possible.

just dog tired...

Its a lot of maintenance.. the spring clean up can take a few days, and needing 35 yards of mulch add up quick, but we love the results, and enjoy every minute of it.

Figured I'd add this here so its all together.. I added a loft over the RV bay in the barn. I'm not sure why I didn't think of it as I was building it, but it has been a great use of an unused area.. but boy, its quickly filled up.. not sure how...:D

We just extended the stairs leading up to the finished room, which worked well.

Theres a space for a lift, which I still need to build, but it will be so nice being able to palletize stuff and just hit a button to get it up and down.. REALLY need to get on that!!

With just under 8' height, and being 20'x 42'.. I've gain a huge space for minimal money.. I'm now at just over 3100 sq feet. Sometimes, it still seems too small, but I can't complain at all!! Its become the place my boys and they're friends like to come hang out, and work on their motorcycles and toys, which is why I built it.

Are you going to use a winch to raise & lower your pallets, or something else?

A few years ago, I built a mezzanine in my attached garage, so I could get some of my **** out of the way. It's amazing how much larger my garage floor suddenly got!

Your place sure looks nice, thanks for sharing your photos. :)

Thanks! Its crazy how much "stuff" I've got.. even in the last couple years.. My Dad always said "Nature Abhors a Vacuum".. and it totally applies to my shop! :lol_hitti The extra space will help me organize a bit, and hopefully get the clutter out of actual work space. I picked up these last year for the smaller stuff..

Over 7' tall..still need to clean them up..

However... I need to get the stuff up there, I've carried a lot of the small stuff, but I want to palletize the holiday decor, and various off season tractor implements.. So I had this welded up for me.

I've bought a HF 2000# electric winch. I plan on building a crib over the lift so I can can have a 4 point lift. As the only place for it was right in the middle of the big doors, I need to be able to totally lift it out of the way so the camper can go in and out.. I'm still trying to figure out a final design.

Thanks for stopping by! The shops been a life, (or marriage) saver as I've been out with 3 shoulder surgeries the past two years.. If I didn't have a place to escape to everyday, my wife would have killed me a LONG time ago!!:willy_nil

Okay, call me a "Safety Sally" but simply nailing/screwing a ledger to wall studs is NOT going to hold a lot of weight, especially above the doors where the header is.

I know it would ruin the appearance of your interior, but you should nail a 2x4 to each post butted up under the ledger and run down to the floor.

Late now, but notching the posts for a ledger would have been acceptable.

TOW.. Thanks for stopping by..
Actually I didn't just throw this up.. It was engineered and built by a licensed builder. Its rated at 14000lbs. I believe they used a product like FlatLok or equivalent 6 3/4'" structural wood screws designed for for this application. I wouldn't tackle something like this myself. There was more planning and building than is shown in pictures.

http://www.fastenmaster.com/product-details/flatlok-structural-wood-screw.html

I'm not an engineer or a builder, thats why I left to the professionals, but I believe the joists you were talking about, there were 5 originally, were replaced by almost 30, and the collar ties weren't touched. I have almost 8' of headroom up there. Sorry if my pictures didn't show the whole process. As it was described to me, this is actually 2 barns built together structurally, which provides a very strong building.

Interesting project -- having built a few ... I understand the time and frustrations !

Question: What were used for the stone steps? Are the limestone/bluestone or cast concrete. I hope cast concrete as they are just the ticket for my new build.

Thanks!.. it was an experience for sure! LOL! Luckily my wife and I survived with our sanity, and still liking each other! :bounce:

The steps, and all the pavers and walls used in the backyard and walkways are cast concrete. Name brand Techo-bloc. So far the only issue has been around the hot tub, I don't believe they allowed enough expansion, and the pavers are cracked every spring and have been replaced under warranty.. hopefully someday the damn installer will figure it out.. :willy_nil

Appreciate the information -- we have a dealer of the Techo in the region -- have only seen the products on-line. The large step treads look like a fool proof way to achieve a nice wide joint free step w/o going to the huge expense of finding stone and having it cut.

Sanity is important -- most don't understand how stressful the building process. I was better at it when I was younger .. I also had less $$ with corresponding lower expectations :)

Wow, Fantastic build. If you don't mind me asking, what are the dimensions of your pavilion. We are in the process of building a new "garage" behind our house and looking for a way to tie the existing landscaping into the new build site. This is exactly what we had in mind. once again, FANTASTIC build!

So sorry I never saw your question! The pavilion is roughly 12x18 if I remember correctly. Haha! It buried under snow right now or I would go measure for you. We love it.. it was a last minute addition but really helped finish off the back yard. Be sure to post your build pics too!!

Thanks! Forrest

I have no idea how I missed this build thread, but it is simply incredible. I can't imagine the frustration of having to deal with the massive amount of work that was underway, and the chaos I'm sure it brought into your lives, but WOW, what a finished product. The details and thought process around them are just fantastic.

Well done, and while I don't expect many additional updates and messages, I'm subscribing so I can come back to refresh my memory on the many great ideas!

Well done!

Thank you for your kind words! It was certainly a very hectic 2 years..lol It didn't help how the project tripled from our original plan.. but once the ball started rolling.. it innocently began with "while we were doing it, we should just as well..." And down the rabbit hole we went. LOL!! There were many nights I had to help keep the Mrs from a nervous breakdown..lol... she was "DONE" long before it actually was..

Looking back tho, it was worth it. It was a lot to keep on top of it all, we had a great GC but I still had to be very vigilant, and there are only a few small regrets. Luckily nothing we can't live with. I still get a smile on my face every time I walk into my shop and get to play, I hope to retire in 8 years and have many plans and projects I want to tackle in there.. and our home is very warm and welcoming, and now we're able to enjoy it with our friends and families.

Once again, they get pulled off my job. Only a week I'm promised.. Always chasing new money, that guy, how about taking care of the customers you already have. grr...
5 weeks later, another office visit with less than veiled threats, work progresses again. I think I was actually too nice by this time, but my wife finally beat it into my head that more honey, less vinegar might actually get me further in life. who knew?!?

A mahogany deck goes down, and the big door that I was promised for months show up.

Yes, They're a beast..400#or so apiece. Now I knew i wanted roll up for the three bay, but this door is the first thing you see as you come up the drive, and I just knew they wouldn't work. So credit where credit due, they did agree to make these beauties up to my design. They have a fab shop in-house, and they designed the hinges one-off for me. Fully adjustable, and strong.. after they shims were pulled away, they didn't drop a 1/4".. and so smooth to open and close..

The three roll up doors are installed, all insulated Garaga doors with LiftMaster. Not cheap, but solid and so quiet..

Pat the Painter shows up, good friend of mine, and one of the best painters you could ever need. He and his cousin Bull are just awesome. You have to see it in person to really appreciate how good it looks.

This just highlights the door, the main body still is only the 1 coat pre finish.

I SO would have loved to do timber frame, but it's just not practical in SWFL. Your shop turned out spectacular!! Great job!!
