It may still happen, I think when it does, the house will be torn down and reuse the foundation. You can see how close it is, would make a nice commute.

Everything depends on what happens with the house that I grew up in, if the employee really moves out, I plan on buying that from my Dad, but that doesn't mean I won't buy the this house too. It will make the shop more valuable long term and would make a nice rental.

Not yet, might not be until next week now, I can’t justify losing the good weather. The yard is about 50% done and I am still getting things done even with the rain that we are getting. I have a few more things to do for today, but he is done with work at 4 and I know I won’t be ready by then. The great part is that I really am making huge progress and I should be done by Monday evening, then I have to get back to work. At least the yard will be ready for snow, not sure I will be, but I don’t think Mother Nature cares.

Moving the conex now, then going to raise both them up, so I don’t have issues with ice blocking the doors. Moved the 1/2 ford out back and started parking stuff, looks like there will be lots of room. :)

My cousin delivered some gravel, then we stripped some sand from the back area of the shop and dumped it over by the wood chips, looks like next week I will be able to get some more, then he may come over and level things up, should be good timing to beat any snow. Tomorrow I will raise up the conex boxes, then I have to change tires on the E-One fire truck, then I can put a set of tires on the Cascadia so I can get that moved too. Excited about all this, next step will be to start dismantling the extra burbs, need to get a couple bodies up on top of the conex boxes, then I don't have to worry about them at all.

Thanks, work in progress for sure.

Today I have a doctors appointment that screws up the morning, it is also not supposed to get out of the 30s today, I am going to take the day and do a bunch of things that need to be done, hopefully employee discussion is one of them.

Strouty I think we dodged a small caliper snow bullet last night. Next week not so much.
Winter is coming fast. Just a little more outside clean-up here.

Employee update, almost exactly as I thought, Dad had the meeting without me and caved to demands, so now I have to rewrite things and **** it up. I did win on some fronts and the guy did mention to my dad that people are hiring for $35 an hour with benefits. I don’t think he understands how easy he has things. The main thing that is changing is the rent for the house and shop space. We originally agreed on $1600 a month for both, then after looking things over I decided that was too much and made it $1400, well the employee told dad it was way too much and now it is $650 a month because he has to pay more money on his $10 an hour raise. He got the point that the truck is not for his personal use and I think he was pissed off that we are not paying for his truck repairs or diesel fuel anymore. Do I sound bitter?

I actually hope he quits, it would make my life more complicated for a little while, but much better long term.

To be fair, we did pull a lot of his "benefits", but I forgot to mention my Dad is giving him a retirement package of $25K a year for five years on top of all this extra ****. Not bad since he only worked for Dad for 10 years.

For the last ten years he was paid $20 an hour for 40 hours every week, he works 35.

He has had all his parts/tires/brakes/whatever paid for on his truck.

He has had every gallon of diesel fuel for the truck paid for.

He has had his cell phone paid for.

Free rent of the house and shop.

Free electricity for both the shop and house.

Free internet

Free EZ pass

4 weeks paid vacation

2 weeks free use of the lake house

Reimbursement in cash form for his private health insurance

Free heat at the shop

Paid to plow his own driveway

I am sure I am forgetting something.

That is what pretty much everyone says when they hear this. The guy needs to wake up and take a look at reality. Even when I lived in the house (years ago), I had to work ten extra hours each week to pay for the house, I was responsible for my own electricity, phone, internet, and fuel for my truck.

Wow. Please forgive me for interfering but that guy has to go. He’s taking advantage of your dad. I know you know this already. Pull the bandage off the wound, get rid of the scab so the real healing can occur. Hurts at first, better then letting it fester and get worse.

You should start his $25K retirement on the first of the new year. When he gets his new job at $35 an hour with normal [minimal] benefits and perks you'll be able to hear the whining from the next county.

The worst part of all this is that when he moves out of the house and shop, he is literally moving 1500 feet away at the bottom of the driveway, so we will be neighbors. :(

Wow! I'd lay out the math in real world terms, like second grade reading book style, so he would understand it. Then let him go.

Does this guy actually produce or just use up resources? If not, send him down the road.

His Dad lives at the bottom of the hill and he is moving in with him to take care of him. He plans on living there after his Dad passes, at least that is what I understand.

As far as productivity, he is a skilled worker for sure, but Dad has created the need for him. Basically my Dad wants someone to do whatever he wants when he wants it, by keeping an employee around, he can have them do what he wants at a moments notice, the rest of the time the employee is doing things that should be hired out. The best way for me to explain it is with an example of what he does. He had my Dad buy a couple welders because they were good deals, then he fixed one rather easily, the second one he pulled apart, bought parts, put it back together, tested it, had to pull it apart, buy more parts, put it back together....... you get the idea. In the end Dad ended up with two welders, on for the Employee’s shop and one for Dad’s shop, but it cost more than what buying two new welders would have cost between parts and labor, not to mention the time the employee could have been doing something more important. My Dad doesn’t see things the way I do, I repair things because I can’t afford to buy the new version, my Dad created a job position to repair things that in the end he pays more than a new version costs while complaining that he needs to get this project done or that project done and there isn’t enough time.

So in the end, the employee can fix anything, can make anything, but should he really be doing either?

I can start Friday.

Having an employee around to do whatever, whenever might be something your dad needs. Keeping an employee 80% profitably productive is hard in certain size operations. More than the 80... is unrealistic.

Replacement with someone in your control is the only option. Regain all property, severe all ties. Change the locks.

Now for reality... best of luck with what you MUST live with till the situation changes.

I have lived with worse, once we get past this, I will be fine for a while. The biggest issues I had were that nothing was written down, everything relies on the employee telling me what deal he had with my Dad and I didn’t trust him, plus Dad couldn’t remember what any of the deals were. At least (if he stays) I can now say, hey, you can’t do that, whereas before it was a lip biting exercise.

I was thinking of being brave and trying to move the conex boxes closer together, but I just need to drop the “perfection” and move on, they need to be leveled and then I need to finish parking things out back. Heck, next year the conex boxes may move with me. I also need to swap the batteries in the forklifts, then start hauling things to my Dad’s Quonset hut for the winter. Plan is to take the orange forklift and the big drill press up there, maybe the brake lathes too. That would free up some space for sure.

It is pretty cold outside, so I am just futzing around cleaning things up while waiting for the temps to rise a bit and the hours to get later, don't want to make too much noise too early, at least not outside. I am seeing things in a better light for sure, next few days should be pretty productive. Tomorrow I think I will borrow my brother's dump truck, then I can move the rest of the sand from out back over to the pile and then spread all the gravel I have. If next week treats me right, I might be able to get more of the sand removed so the shop only has gravel around it. Best part about this it that the little forklift will be much easier to maneuver and shouldn't get stuck even out back.

*update* supposed to get a refund

First time I have been burned on Facebook market place, bought a working air tool that doesn't work, guy is trying to say it is because it is cold. Damn tool exhausts instantly, can't get parts for it either. Oh well, live and learn, guess eBay from now on for things like that unless I get to see them in operation.

Have accomplished almost nothing this afternoon, lost money, lost time, and found out that an issue with a credit card I thought was rectified, wasn't. Today is not going to be my day.

I did get the tires in the fire truck swapped, put the truck away, also moved the ambulance and the cascadia out back. Still have to get the conex boxes raised up, should be able to do that tomorrow.

I did get to talk to the guy and he said he will refund my money, I still wasted a bunch of time, but not losing the money makes it a little better.

Ok, my resume is filled out and sent. I can start the 3rd Monday after Thanksgivings. I guess my only question is does your dad’s business pull in that kind of monthly income to where dad has a salary, benefits and retirement.

Looks like you’re making great progress on getting things arranged. Do you mind if we start calling you GJ (Gerard Junior) lol.

It is going to get worse. I have two more trucks coming here for sure, then possibly another three. I have kind of drawn things out on paper and it looks like it will all fit, just need to move a few more things, should have everything cleaned up this afternoon. Goal today is to move remaining truck body, move M37, raise up conex boxes and get at least one trip to my Dad's place, probably take the F-250 up there first.

Possibly 5, definitely 2

Two more Cascadias, the diamond reo cement truck, my brothers crane, and then maybe a Freightliner FL106, that is the one most up in the air right now.

Got both conex boxes raised up still have a pitch to the back to drain away from the doors, close to level, but I found in the past getting them level doesn’t stay that way due to frost, so I just got them close. Of course as I have always said, you shouldn’t try to move a loaded conex, the white one made a mess again, it was much heavier than expected, so I had to use the boom to pick it, once it lifted, it slide towards the truck and I heard the mess being made. I took a quick look, but I am not dealing with it until tomorrow. :(

I am currently working on the steel racks that have never been setup, kind of just unloaded them a few years ago and never did anything else. I think I can make them usable and fit the space better with minimal effort, especially since I am cleaning things up anyways.

This morning I shuffled a bunch of stuff inside to make room, been wasting a lot of space for a while, now that the new conex is up on blocks and pulled forward to match the other boxes, I can really start to load it. Weather sounds like we may get an inch or two of snow on Tuesday, but temps get back to upper 40s, so I will not be plowing it, would be way too much of a mess.
