Gonna be around 40 in a few days, not like everything has to be 100% done.

They are calling for cold temps here, so it may stay, no clue how much we are going to get either. They thought it was going to start in the afternoon, but it was well before noon when the snow was sticking to the ground.

The F-350 headlights won’t work while the plow is hooked up. :(

I will have to figure that out tomorrow, hopefully there won’t be too much snow tonight, no way I am going to plow with no headlights.

At my house there is no snow, the Hill had about 3 inches when I left.

Yuck, snow is accumulating at my house now, looks like a couple inches anyways. Lots of power outages, looks like almost one quarter of my town’s customers have no power. Then the Hill, that town is three quarters without power. I suspect it is going to be a while before power is back unfortunately.

I think I got about a 45 minute nap before getting multiple calls about generator issues, been messing with that for a few hours now. Everything is at least operational, trying to get diesel fuel topped off, *****, all I have is three of the five gallon cans, need to order a real fuel transfer tank. Taking care of all this **** *****, especially since there is no credit for it, Dad never even realizes anything is wrong and if he does, I get blamed for it. :(

Still snowing, but a lot less. I want to go home and take a shower, most likely in the dark, but I feel nasty at this point, almost 48 hours since the last one. As soon as it is light out, I can plow the Hill and the tower sites close by, then I have to get some batteries and head to the SG so I can get the plow operational over there.

Just steped out to get wood for the stove looks like at least 6 to 8 here

Got 1/2 inch here, still have power also which is lucky as I have lost ittwice for more than a day each time in the last 2 weeks. CMP needs to learn how to clear their right of way but seeing as I've been losing my power here for years I doubt thats ever going to happen. Hope you guys get power quickly

Still out in Portland at our house, basement flooded, battery backup pump never kicked in. :(

Power is back at the Hill, can’t hardly plow anything, snow is too heavy for a truck with no weight in the back, probably get to that tomorrow.

About half a dozen other issues and then I will be back to square one. :(

I just get the generator started, power comes back on. Better than no power, but another hour of daylight burned. I have to try and get a couple more things done, then I am getting food and going home and going to bed.

I played around with the plow some more, got the top of the Hill plowed, even down by the Quonset hut, I think I should be starting a road grading service, a lot of dirt. The Fisher XV2 blades are really angled, I think they would be awesome on pavement, but the dig too much on dirt and I know they make shoes to raise the blade up, but the crown of the road and all the off kilter places make those unusable.

I hope so, I am about to head out, got the tower site near the Hill plowed out and the rest of the Hill driveway area as best I could. The SG will have to wait until tomorrow, I need to source some batteries and swap them out, pretty sure the truck will not run without the booster pack connected, especially while trying to plow (it is an electric over hydraulic unit and it ***** some juice.

I can see where I made a few mistakes in my parking setup, I think I can fix it, but the blue hydraulic tail trailer is really in my way, bad. I will need to free things up to get it moved.

Also need to get a backup generator for the house along with a small transfer switch and input plug. This way the basics be an stay running and we don’t end up with a flooded basement again. I will probably also instal one of those backup pumps that run off city water pressure, that will ensure we don’t continue to have this problem. It seems to happen once every year, I don’t like it. :(

I have to eat something, haven’t had much other than some random junk food over the last 48 hours. I am also partially dehydrated, got the awesome headache that goes with it. Drinking water now, probably start my laundry too. I figure if I go to bed around 7, I can probably make it through until 5 am. Then I can start this craziness I call my life all over again, wish me luck. ;)

I ended up making it until just about 7, had to get up at 4, looks like this is my new wake up time, GF’s schedule changed, I am not really happy about it.

Going to try and get the SG cleaned up today, have a bunch of things that need to be done in order to make that happen. My task list is insane, but I will pick at it steadily and check things off as I go.

This morning has been a pain, so far accomplished nothing, was supposed to do some quick data entry, but internet is down. I tried to connect to my phone, using it as a hot spot, no go, been messing with that for ten minutes, now I have to call internet provider and get them working on it.

On a good note, yesterday I had to charge the nest thermostat, still need to wire up the 24 volt system for charging, anyways, I let it charge overnight. Before I took it off the base, I cranked the heat for about an hour while I did some plowing, probably warmed things up to 70, well this morning it was still 54 degrees inside. I did have my small electric heater going in the office, but I doubt that kept the entire house warm.

Hopefully the day will get better.

It is amazing how easily something like internet access can mess with things, pretty scary actually. Since i have the accounting software setup across multiple computers, doing data entry with the internet down can make a mess of things pretty quick. It is tough, I could use one dedicated computer and not worry about this issue, but being able to do things across multiple computers generally out weighs the not so common problems.

It is about 25 degrees outside and I am glad I cleaned up the road as well as I did, it would have been nasty once it froze up. Need to collect all the batteries and pull one from the white burb, that means I have to clear off some snow. Might do a couple more things in the shop, the sun is just starting to rise.

I plan on dying early, I am used to all the chaos. :(

Over at the tower site getting batteries swapped in one of Dad’s 5 tons. Mice love these things, it smells so bad.

These batteries had a good run, probably were junk last year, but they get abused by sitting more than anything.

Funny part is one from another truck, but same date has tested out as good, then I had one with a 2015 date on it. Two should be fine, these trucks usually start really well anyways.

I still have a few more to get at the SG, will be nice to have them gone for sure.

You're on the same plan i am. Most of my peers are talking about retirement and i expect to work until i die. I just can't think of myself as someone who just sits and does nothing. When my dad retired, he basically watched tv and slept. I don't think that's a good thing.

Is there any way to have a battery maintainer on the batteries that sit all the time?

I wanted to try a solar charger, but they tend to cook the batteries if you aren’t careful. At this point it isn’t worth the effort, just replace them every 9 years works for me. ;)

I try and run my stuff every few months, a lot of times you just forget how much time has passed. Battery disconnects have been the best fight against dead batteries.

Finished “plowing” at the SG, I didn’t go crazy, too soft and I have lots of sand, I ripped a couple big ditches already, next year I will be laying gravel out and removing all the sand, between that and leveling the entire area up, should make next winter plow season a dream.

You need to use a charge controller. The Army's been using them for a long time on their vehicles that are stored outdoors. I think they were Solargizers or something similar.

I don't see a charge controller on those. Without it, it'll boil the battery dry. I speak from actual experience.

I think the description said something about it, but honestly I didn't read into it. Strouty will do his own research should it become a priority for him. Personally, I'd go the BatteryTender route, but as they say, "not my pig, not my farm".

Sure, the Battery Tender is a good unit, but there's no power out in the yard where everything is parked.

Solar is the best for these.

You don't actually think I was suggesting plug-in units do you?
Apparently I need to type all the words in my head instead of skipping a few as they make their way to my fingertips on the keyboard, but as a brand, BatteryTender makes solar units, which is what I was alluding to. Only a crazy man would run the amount of extension cords Strouty would need for plug in units.

What, they make solar ones, I have 35 extension cords run all over the place right now. ;)

Someday I will go down that path, for right now it is replace them when I have to. The biggest issue with solar is when you need them the most is winter, snow covers the windshields pretty well too.

I am back at the Hill, going to meet up with the generator guy around five and see if we can figure out why the generator keeps starting and running even though there is power to the building.

Also trying to get another load of scrap steel ready for tomorrow, have to cut a couple fuel tanks open, wish me luck!
