Been picking away at little things, I am not super motivated and I still need to go and vote (state primary is today), haven’t had lunch, so hangry is setting in. It looks like tomorrow might be less rain and more clouds, I didn’t get to the outside stuff today and honestly it was a good choice. I am making some progress that is actually visible, should have taken some before pictures just so I could see what I accomplished, but I know it is better, much better.

I am also taking measurements and trying to figure out where things are going, hopefully I won’t have to move things twice.

Yesterday I also decided that I am going to just put a torque converter in the Blurb and go from there. The trans wasn’t slipping at all, just vibrating, it did it in park and neutral and once I disconnected the torque converter from the flex plate it stopped making the vibration. This will allow me to have two vehicles, then I will be fixing the white diesel burb, from there I will start doing more work to the 3500 so that it is a full daily work driver. I know I have to get this stuff ready because once I pull the sander out of the F-350, it will be commandeered for boat moving duty. ;)

I have run out of totes and it is going to make my cleanup a lot harder, if it wasn’t raining I would head to the Salvage Garage and get more, but I don’t feel like trying to get everything together from my storage boxes while it is raining. I may just concentrate on the house, doing a similar cleanup. At this point progress is progress. Hopefully I can get my totes first thing tomorrow morning and resume my cleanup process. I will do some of the office work tonight to offset things.

Thank you all for the kind words, still a bit tough going to the Hill knowing Chuck won’t be there anymore. I am working on cleaning things up around the house, Chuck had a lot of stuff and I had a lot of stuff for him. Some of the supplies are getting donated to the local animal shelter as they can be used for other, more normal animals. I am not going to try and replace him, he was a one off. He will always have a place in my heart, I have lots of pictures and videos of him, going to have to group them all together and back them up.

I am trying to get myself back to my regular routine, I got to take the 3500 out yesterday for a good test drive, only issue I have run into is the wiper controller has a bad circuit board so it either won’t stop wiping or will stop in random spots. Luckily I have some replacement parts to fix it, it is going to be raining off and on for the next few days and I would like the wipers to work properly.

The rams for the BFF should be done this week, I hope to pick them up on Friday. No schedule yet for reassembly, I would like to do it soon so that I can tear into the main ram and get it over for a rebuild as well.

I have some office work to get done too, that should take up most of Wednesday and Thursday. I have been trying to figure out what is going to the auction and what isn’t, there are several things I am on the fence with. They are the risky things, things that could do little money at the auction versus bigger money being sold on Marketplace. I am also looking at scrapping some things that I was going to rebuild, but they were supposed to be for my use, not resale. After looking at the numbers and the time involved, I am far better off saving some parts, scrapping the rest. It won’t make me as much money as selling them AFTER fixing them, but it won’t cost me as much time or money as fixing them and having to deal with selling them. I think that is the best option for my current situation, moving forward is better than this holding pattern I have been in lately.

My biggest issue is the messes that I call shop spaces, not being able to find anything is a terrible waste of time. I have just been sweeping the mess to the side in order to clumsily get through another project. I have to do something about it. What I want to do is essentially remove everything superfluous to the shop and organize it in storage or get rid of it if it is not needed, from there I could bring back what is needed and make a home for it as I go. Tripping over things to organize other things is not working out. I have more stuff being stored on the floor than I do on shelves. I have been trying to scale back things and in doing so it has pretty much just depressed me, I am trying to work through years of hidden emotions that have been covered up by projects and stuff. It is the true hoarder way. I know that I can get rid of things, I just need to be n a better place emotionally, seems dumb, but it is what is going on. Having the two shop spaces really made things worse, it was always an excuse to buy duplicates or get another project. Not good.

At least I have been really going through things (mostly in my head), finding out what is the most beneficial to me long term is what I am striving for. The short term is going to be exhausting mentally and physically, but I have to just keep reminding myself that it will be worth it in the end. By doing the hard stuff now, it should make things a lot more fun later, I sure hope so.
Sorry about Chuck , it’s always hard losing a pet. You have a good heart and know what you need to focus on, do what’s best for you!

We all love watching your journey but really Volvo mania, Lista mania, green tool mania, Burb mania, Perfect truck mania, Fork lift mania, Ultimate trailer mania and I'm sure there were others!
Just try to get at least one thing totally done then you will see real progress and maybe feel good about it,

This is what i did last fall. I realized tripping over things was not working and only keeping me distracted. I took everything i could find that wasn't nailed down, and put on pallets and moved outside into the yard. If it wasn't rainproof, it got a tarp. Then i proceeded to rearrange the shop to my liking and put up more pallet rack to load things on. It turbocharged my efforts.

In the end, if you have something sitting outside and you haven't touched it in 6 months, you probably don't need it. Get rid of it and move on. It's pretty freeing. Best wishes on your cleanup.

My cleanup is going to be erratic and sporadic, some of the stuff that needs to go has to be dismantled before leaving. I enjoy this process, I just got a lot bit in front of my skis, I need to make this year count. There are a lot of background things that have been slowly moving in my favor, I hope that I won't have to fight through things as much, but only time will tell. I have five weeks until I can bring things to the auction, there are a few things that I will have to list on Marketplace, also going to have to get my eBay skills back up to snuff. I put together a pretty decent list of things that have to be done, fixing the BFF, fixing the rams on the army dump, upgrading the Mitsu, getting both military forklifts totally functional, having multiple DD, all these things will help me move forward with the rest of my messes.

I am making some dedicated space for my eBay stuff, also a space for Marketplace items, auction stuff is being corralled, scrap has to be dug out as I go. This year there will be a lot of scrap getting moved, I have the Hill to contend with as well as my personal ****. Good thing is that the Hill's scrap will be paying for the ramp truck, so I should own that by the end of the summer. Of course, once I own it, it will also need to have some things done to it, so it will be another "project". My plan is to keep very local this year, Perk and the Muv-All both need quite a bit of work, so I am going to have to take both of them down at some point for the repairs/upgrades. I will need both for the auction and the major scrap runs, after that I should be able to take them out of service. I am a bit nervous about this, but I can't really do much about it. The rams on the Muv-all are about done, it also needs some more fabrication work, Perk needs the transmission replaced and this will coincide with the PTO/pump upgrade, that leads into the hydraulic system, so forth and so on. Once these things are done, both will be much more efficient and less stress on me. I suspect it will take months to get these things done, but it will absolutely be worth it.

Over at the Salvage Garage, got sidetracked with trying to find part numbers from the DPF filters on the Freightliners out back, going to see what they are worth, appears that they are regularly sold on eBay as well. I am in the train of thought that if I can get rid of the big stuff and only store the smaller stuff, well that just works better overall. Need to grab my totes, put out the trash for tomorrow and then I can go get my torque converter for the Blurb. I will have some more paperwork to deal with, but I got some done last night.

The local Freightliner dealer here in Jax has an in house DPF shop. They just take the filter elements out of the housings and cook them in the oven. It appears the elements are dimensional and they can go in any truck that uses that particular size and they are not proprietary to a particular manufacturer.

They are worth a few bucks so see if there is a DPF shop local to you.

Seems that the full systems sell for around $1300 on a regular basis, this is without being cleaned, just used. I am sure they are a ridiculous amount new, I also would imagine that there is a core charge, got to find out about that. Knowing the core charge would give me a better baseline price, if there was a truck that got in an accident and the DPF was ruined, it would probably not be allowed as a core.

I have loaded the bins and then some. ;)

I got a lot cleaned up, the mice have been all around in the back storage room, have to clean things as I go. So far I haven’t found anything destroyed, just nastiness from the little fockers.
The little blinkity blinks had a set of shallow wooden drawers packed so full of layer pellets that I could barely get the drawers open to start sucking them out with a sweeper. It took some probing and pulling with a long thin screwdriver to get everything rearranged to open the drawers fully.

Dad just came to me and basically told me once again, that he wants more money than we previously agreed on for rent, he wants to condition the amount of stuff I can have, and he wants to condition anything that I do with the road, house, trees, so on and so forth. I thanked him for telling me this now, it makes things much easier for me overall. He wants to sit down and have a meeting again, I told him I don't think we need to because I won't sign an agreement to "purchase" the property with him applying HOA type rules. I really don't think he understands things, maybe he does and I am the one being dumb. I am just going to move out while I still can. The good thing is that I haven't done most of the major things to the house or the shop, so I can pull out and only have minimal stuff to repair. Also, by dealing with this now, I can send more things to the auction and start selling more things because I won't need duplicates of everything. It is not going to be a fun process, but I just can't do it anymore, it is literally killing me. :(

That sounds like the best solution. You just don't need the stress, and you know that he will keep messing with any agreement you make.
It's always hard to have disagreements with family so if you can cut down the opportunities for falling out it must be better in the long run.

This is kinda great. After all the horseshit he's put you through, him showing true colors this early is a wonderful thing. I wouldn't repair a thing. Just pack yourself out, leave it all as it is, and let him **** himself into the sunset.

I agree, but I still don’t like it. Feels like I am crushing a dream. :(

I now need to start prioritizing moving things, I may play nice with Dad, but only to get a couple more months of time to move things out of the shop at the Hill. I think I could get him to extend things until the end of September. I would get all the outside stuff moved first, then deal with the inside stuff after that. I will need to setup some of the Lista storage wall over at the Salvage Garage so I have a place for things to go.

No matter what, I need to get the BFF back up and running, it will really be a huge asset moving things around over at the SG. The best part is that I have the entire month of April with Dad gone, so he won’t be in my way.

I think the faster you can make an exit, the better. Moving out some of the big stuff that is outside may be enough to get him to settle down a bit, but don't forget. Realistically, how much could you get moved out/sold while he's gone, and even in the month of March?
Your dad does go in cycles it seems like, so perhaps he'll settle down for a while, but I think it shows that you just can't continue like this with it in limbo.
Best of luck with moving stuff, and it should be a good opportunity for us to see some awesome truck/equipment moving pics!

I have to say, his timing of relaying all that is a bit craptastic. If you're going to have all the conditions and micro management, might as well pay rent for a real landlord and actually get a place that works for you.... Better yet, any thoughts on buying a plot of land with a decent building? Or a the option to build.

Not that anyone wants to acknowledge it, but there has been a steady stream of "stuff" arriving at both places. While it might all fit into your plan, that may not be obvious to your dad. He may be concerned that the influx of stuff may continue thru the future. Again, he may not see your plan and it sounds that he is not interested in listening.

I wouldn't recommend doing anything drastic, but tidying up and keeping your options open is key. (Cash on hand, cash flow, minimal stuff to move, equipment ready to facilitate the move) (of which I think you have a good plan.)

All that to say, having a parent holding something over you is a royal pain. I watched from afar as this happened with my sister in law and her father. Too many financial entanglements and hence expected labor in return.

Don't you have a tower site that you own yourself that would allow for a shop building? Or can you start aiming for something along those lines?

As Jack Reacher says, plan for the worst and hope for the best..... (I enjoy the Lee Child books...)

Negotiators call this the "Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement" (BATNA). Always keep your BATNA in mind, so you can use it to evaluate offers. Part of your BATNA is to protect yourself.You lucked out. A few weeks in March to get started, and the month of April to hustle. You can't help Dad until you can protect yourself.

Just to clarify! Do you actually own anything in the way of real estate in your own name? Many of us thought you owned a tower and just found out you don't. Do you own the SG and it's land? Or at least rent from a non family owner?

Technically I do "own" the tower, the Lawyers know about it, family knows about it, Dad acknowledges it, my Stepmother acknowledges it, he just never wanted to put it in writing. I collect the revenue from it, I maintain it, but ultimately it will become a problem. The Salvage Garage Is owned by an LLC that I control, so no issues with that. The 10% stake is also know by all parties and I collect that revenue monthly. Dad's attorney was hopeful that we could finally sort all this mess out and be done with it, we might still be able to get that part squared away because I am not the only one that wants that taken care of. There are a couple scenarios that I could see the Hill still working out, but they are so far off the radar I will still move off the Hill. I suspect Dad will rent the house and the shop out to some random person that will become his new "favorite son", then they can inherit it when he dies. Honestly, it would not surprise me if he gave it to the ex employee he loves so much.

I think trying to integrate this move with my future plans for the Salvage Garage make the most sense, it is going to make life a bit more difficult as I have a lot of reconfiguring to do in order for this to actually happen. The biggest hangup of the SG is the door openings, I have 12' wide doors (not bad) but about 11' of height (really not good), my plan had always been to rework the shop space so that the gable end of the shop had one large door and that would be the main bay. What is currently the front (where the two overhead doors are, would actually end up being the "rear", I would use this side for pallet racking as it is on the North side of the shop and gets almost no sun in the winter. The current back side of the shop would get one bay door, probably 10' by 10' (I actually have one), this would make a nicer southern exposure side and still allow me to get in and out with smaller vehicles. I would not do any external or structural work on the doors/trusses yet, but I would reconfigure the inside to fit this new layout. By doing that I am not going backwards towards the overall goal, this can be done with relatively little work and I can look at it as work I would need to do anyways. I can see that I am not going to be able to use the inside bay of the SG during this first step as I have to move just about everything out of the way to make this happen. I don't want to overthink things too much as that seems to get me stuck in the mud the easiest. Picking the direction and sticking with it, that is the plan of attack and it seems to make the most sense of all my other thought processes. I have been talking about this for a few years, it has morphed a bit based on the racking and equipment that I have acquired, but the main focus has not changed much. I am going to start taking some measurements and draw up a layout for the overall floor plan, that will give me the roadmap to follow as I go.

I think I can make it happen and leave a good chunk of the main bay open. I am going to have to rework a few things that I didn't want to, but looking it over it just has to be done. My current break room will have to return to a combination office and break room, it has two doors and one has to be eliminated, of course it is the one that I didn't want to eliminate, but it just makes sense. The other thing that has to happen is the man door that I currently use has to get moved and a small partition wall will have to be removed as well. This is going to involve some rework of my current electrical, but I can't see any other way around it. From there I should be able to reconfigure everything else without any major adjustments, I do need to rememberize myself with the layout for the bridge crane as this will become an important part of the puzzle. The location of the uprights will dictate where certain things will live and where doors can go, I don't want to screw that up.

I found my notes from 2015 on the bridge crane, almost ten years ago, more or less made me feel sad. :(

It looks like I may have to add some height to the uprights so I can have the bridge clear any trucks or equipment that will be inside the shop, also looks like I may not be able to do a conventional overhead door on the south side like I wanted to, it might have to be a sliding barn door or one of the bifold hanger type doors like 86 has. I haven't really figured that out yet, but I hope I can make a conventional door work, we will see.

I forgot how low the bridge hangs, this is an underslung type, definitely going to have to do some upright extending, current ones are 13' tall, but the bridge and hoist will take up a good 3' of that. I have to try and get some measurements laid out, if I want to clear any of my equipment/trucks, I need 14' of height. I can make it so the bridge itself would be at 14' by adding 3' of height, the hoist would not clear, but that can be pushed to the side to get around things. It would be nicer to have 20' ceilings, not happening in this shop. ;)

I think I can make some educated guesses from all this info, should allow me to at least have the basic layout figured out this weekend, then I will have the game plan. More measuring and some sketches, I will try and make something up so it can be critiqued, really need to make up a full layout in a CAD program, but at this moment I am not sure I have time for that learning curve. Maybe I should just deal with that extra time, I need to get started on that anyways, otherwise all my fun tools are useless if I can't feed them the info needed.

Tough to measure walls and things when there isn't enough room to really get to them. I think I have the layout of the office/break room figured out, probably shouldn't call it a break room as there won't be enough room to sit more than myself in an office chair, but it will have a couple cabinets, refrigerator, microwave, and a touch of dedicated countertop (maybe lunch room). Also have things figured for the new man door and the main overhead door, the side door is causing some problems because I need to install one post for the bridge crane and they aren't meshing up well. Still working on that problem.

Where do you live @ SG(your LLC owns) or the Hill(father owns, you rent) do I have that right? or somewhere entirely different?

I live somewhere else, the plan was to eventually move to the Hill. I guess things have changed. I do have a possible option to buy land and an old house abutting the SG, but the woman that owns it is about as straight forward as my Dad. Not too worried about housing right now, if interest rates go back down, the GF and I might entertain leaving the current house. We would probably look closer to the SG than the Hill, you get a lot more bang for the buck in that direction.

I am about ready to head out, I have been doing a lot of measuring, marking, and thinking, overall plan seems good enough to move forward, but I want to draw a few more layouts to digest things. The one thing that makes the SG great also makes it a PITA, the floor space is wide open, so you have lots of room, but the wall space is limited, so you don't have as much room for cabinets and things to go against. The stockroom will help that situation, but I am also going to remove two partition walls, so I lose both sides of that, about 20' of wall space in total. This is gone, never to return. The wall that will separate the stockroom from the main area won't really add any wall space for regular usage, it actually takes away some space because of the new door. Having the stockroom will allow more storage overall, but again, it won't help with my wall space situation. This is where I am going to have to get creative. There will be a lot of double stacking and almost everything will either need to be on wheels or have provisions for a pallet jack. all in all I am losing about 30' of wall space versus what I currently have. That is a lot and what is left will almost all have some sort of cabinet or shelving unit, should be entertaining to see what I make of it.

I guess about ready and ready are two different things. I took more measurements and walked through some layouts that seem to work better than what I had originally thought. I think a lot of Lista cabinets will end up in one or more of the conex boxes, there just won't be enough room for all of them in the main shop. I also realized that I screwed up on my math, I will be losing much more wall space than I originally stated, it will be almost 60' of wall space, 30 of it had storage above that, so in reality it is more like 90' of wall space. I will be creating some new storage space above areas where I previously didn't have it, but it is still going to be a net loss of space. I think that the stockroom will change my storage space significantly enough that things will be offset in a good way. I just have to remember that I will be gaining a 12' by 35' (maybe a bit more) bay for bigger trucks and equipment.

Isn't there an employee employer relationship with your dad? Seems like you have to be cool about that unless you want that blown up also? And what about your brother is he involved in any of your dads business? Or does he just stay away on purpose? I think your idea to get **** to auction is a good one.
