It was supposed to rain more than it has, plus I thought today was going to be rainy, not really, so now I am trying to get a bit of outdoor stuff done. We may be getting white stuff the end of next week, so I have to get all the major **** cleaned up so I have a place to put said white stuff if needed. I suspect that I will be working all day and some of the night on Thanksgiving, again. I just need to get enough stuff stored away so that if winter sets in, I don’t have to be too worried. We usually get a second bit at the apple and I am hoping that will be the case.

Dad interrupted me, he couldn’t load the roller into his trailer, he had the trailer blocked up six inches off the ground because he “didn’t know he could dump the air out of the truck’s suspension.” I had to bring a forklift down the Hill and pick up the front of the roller and push it on the trailer. He wanted to setup the crane and tilt it while backing the crane up and driving the roller. I wasn’t having any of that.

Even with that clusterfack I still managed to load the scrap and make it to the scrap yard, super happy about that. I moved around a bunch of stuff at the Salvage Garage, have lots to move over there before that white pavement gets placed.

It looks like Friday we are going to have our first taste, right be a bit more than a taste, but it is still a ways away. Today was supposed to rain all day, but it hasn't done hardly anything, damp and cold with the wind, but I will take that over the other stuff.

I had a bunch of things to do before I could get to what I really wanted to do, now I might put things off a bit more as I still have a couple hours of daylight and since it isn't raining, I might be able to do a few more of the outside things that have to be done anyways.

I am swapping out the mangled U-bolts that I am pretty sure used to be square for some new regular ones. Will make me feel safer with the tilt trailer when loaded. The I have to add a “temporary” mount for my Brother’s electric winch, I don’t want it too permanent as I don’t think this trailer is going to be with me for too long. I am going to pick up a small forklift and I am sure it will need help getting it onto the trailer. I figured the winch would be easier than a come along.

I think I have it figured out, going to make a receiver plate that can be chained to any trailer or whatever you want to chain it to. Long term I think this is a better option as I seem to change things up way too much, so versatility is key. I do need to weld on some new D-rings so that I don't have a ridiculous angle on the chain, it won't be great, but it should work fine for what I am going to do. Tomorrow will be a fresh day, my entire plan has already changed, but I think it will work out for the best anyways.

Used to have a roll-back trailer and I just welded a receiver to the deck so I could move the winch around. That and it didn't sit outside in the weather all the time.

I am going to elaborate a bit on the reasons for not adding a receiver tube to the front of this trailer. the only place that I can add it and feel structurally safe is on the deck in front of the "headboard". If I do this, I will lose deck space and I do not want to do that. I would prefer to have it flush with the "headboard" and let it protrude out towards the tongue, adding gussets to the more rugged frame portion of the tilt deck. This can't be achieved without reworking the tool box welded to the tongue and it would be a major rework. I could setup a plate that allows me to bolt the receiver tube temporarily to the deck and then remove it, but even that would require me to remove some of the trailer decking so I can get a decent weld on the braces. Making a plate that can be chained to anything just seems like the better approach. Change my mind....

You have a plan, roll with it!!

Your situation with many, multiple trailers is probably different then most of us.

I have two trailers. One small 4x8 trailer and a tandem axle for hauling my mini ex.

Neither have a winch on them. Curious to see how your plan comes together.

I got the D-rings welded to the trailer, a bit awkward as they are much thicker than the angle iron I am welding too, plus they were at a 45 degree angle. I ground back a lot so I could get good penetration, but I don't weld as much as I used to and it was obvious on the bottom beads. I think I was actually running a bit too much heat as I kept undercutting the thicker material, I am not that concerned with these, if they were on a bigger trailer I might do a few more passes.

The project at hand over at the Salvage Garage was to make this big loader bucket go away. It had hydraulic lines and rams that needed to be removed and I wanted to save some chunks of steel off it along with the rubber cutting edge. Most of it would have to be removed to get a decent price anyways. It is very windy, making it cold, like I was unprepared, cold, luckily using a torch tends to keep you warm. ;)

I tried to sell it, was listed for a couple months and had several people interested until they found out the mounts were not the right size for just about anything. It was a lot too big for my size machines (someday they will be functional!), otherwise I would have modified the mounts myself. I have another one that is close enough size wise, that it will be worth modifying. Now I need to load it, I want to bring it to the scrap yard first thing tomorrow.

Loaded the remnants of the bucket, and got the forks cut up, apparently I need a bigger tip, 2 1/2” thick steel was about all I could handle. Not pretty, but got the pieces I want to save cut off, shouldn’t have to do anymore torching for a while. I am going to pick things up, then my back is telling me to head home and regroup tomorrow.

That was the plan, if I do it. All you need is some relief of the stress along with the heat and most pins would come out.

I am waiting at the scrap yard for the machine to warm up, they have been open for an hour, you would think that would have been a first thing to do, not make people wait. Been ten minutes so far, not like I have anything better to do than listen to the machine run.

Ended up weighing 2740 pounds, got a whopping $165.13, hip hip hooray!

I have an appointment with the chiropractor, going to take care of that now, then I will be at the Salvage Garage all afternoon, got to load up some furnaces and parts for tomorrow’s adventure. I still need to go back to the Hill to finish the winch plate and I saw some wires that look like they need attention on the trailer. Should be a good long couple days.

Not worth the trouble.

It's not the money, nor the time. The important thing is that Strouty got done what HE wanted on this, and the scrap is gone. He got some gas money, and parts for a different project.
The mental load reduction is also good, now that big bucket isn't sitting there, reminding him there's work to be done. That's probably worth the most!
Plus it was probably pretty satisfying using the torch and getting it gone. And we got to see some cool pics!

Hopefully the rest of Strouty's projects are going well today.

Here in SD, it was 17F this morning with the wind blowing, so I'm staying with inside garage (heated) work for this afternoon.

I feel for you Kent, that would have kept me inside too. It was probably 20 with the windchill yesterday, I need a little more time to get acclimated to 17 and windy!

I may have found a shortcut for the winch mount, going to chop it off, would rather use this than cut up my nice steel and use a new receiver tube. All I would need to do is weld on the D-rings and it would work essentially as is. Just for weight reduction, I will chop it down a bit.

But also got rid of another headache. I've given away quite a bit this year because the space and time is more valuable than the money.
You're both right, I was just pointing out the metrics. Maybe the next time he has the ''opportunity'' to get a big old piece of steel he doesn't need, he'll remember this..lol

I got outfumbled, I ran out of oxygen and the plasma cutter is at the Hill. :(

I guess it is going to be a later night than anticipated, the trailer is all loaded, but now I have to go back to the Hill to cut and weld the plate for the winch attachment. I should have checked the oxygen tank this morning, oh well, it isn’t like I use it all the time.

While you probably would have liked to have used the winch, having it done and ready made sure there was a plan B. If you hadn't had it ready, the way things go, you'd be using a come-along to get that forklift on the trailer!
Plans for this forklift?
