I may end up buying a 3/4" drive, I have decent half inch drives, but the 1" ones, even the small one, is going to get awful heavy quickly. I am going down the weekend before to mess with a couple flanges and do a bit of prep work. On the final weekend, there will also be a smoke wrench as a last ditch effort for anything really stuck.

The track crane still isn't done, but the throttle and fuel shutoff now work very well. I have some wiring to finish up, but it can be started and used if needed. One thing that is getting worse is the starter/flywheel, there is a pretty bad spot and it appears to be one of the engine's favorite places to stop. At least that isn't the worst thing to change, you only have to take the pumps off the bell housing and everything is easy to get to. I am sure it will need a starter as well as a new flywheel, figuring out what I need is going to be the fun part, it is a gray market machine that was imported from overseas.

I found a copy of the original IHI service manual on eBay, hopefully that will help out. I am going to have to do a bunch of stuff to it over this summer and all the effort will be worth it, the IHI is one of my favorite pieces of equipment.

I said I was going to bed early tonight, yet it is 11:30 already, go figure.

Don't feel bad, even I have problems keeping up.

Yesterday I was also messing with some of the Lista drawers, decided that I would need to expand things a bit and remove some drawers to use open shelves instead. I just got the stuff from the Hill pulled apart and loaded, need to grab a few more drawers, then I am going over to the Salvage Garage to work on setting things up. Going to make a mess, but it has to be done, besides, things are so messy right now it won't even look worse!

I think this week has caught up with me. I am worn right out, still need to pick up my Brother's trailer, so I guess I am going to do that and then see how I feel. I did get all the Lista storage wall parts and drawers inside at the Salvage Garage, should be able to move things around and then assemble it this weekend. Saturday is supposed to be raining all day, Sunday looks better.

This is where the Lista is going, so I have to move all this stuff and I just don’t have the ambition right now.

So much for a break, I went to get the trailer, then decided to do a couple things, then decided to take Perk and the Muv-All over to the Salvage Garage. Returned some battery cores and made it to the bank before they closed. I was having a heck of a time shifting Perk, figured out the throttle was sticking a bit, so it was just enough to mess up my shifts, got it so it moves better, but I think I am going to change out the return springs, they seemed stretched.

IMG_1544.jpeg

Also grabbed the fork extensions, they will need to be modified a bit to work with the Hyster forks.

Lots of water, I think they were saying we were getting 3", I believe it. I got myself a late start and I needed it. I am over at the Salvage Garage, going to try and get a few things done as a jump start for tomorrow, should be a better weather day, at least I hope so. I will update with some pictures later, hopefully it will actually look decent.

The rain stopped and that is when I started...

Got the Muv-All unhooked, setup the yard donkey, but there are a few issues, so it can't be used yet. At least I know it will work once I sort out the issues.

Then I headed to the Hill to get the Military forklift, loaded that, decided to just take it over and unload it as well. Now I am hooked to my Brother's trailer with the Ford and I am about to head out. At least tomorrow I won't have to be shuffling equipment or trucks.

Already at it.

I am gathering supplies from the Hill, will be at the Salvage Garage in about an hour, then the fun starts. Worst part is that I am not working outside, but I need to move stuff outside to work inside, so the good weather is key. I would love to do some actual work outside, but that depends on how things go inside.

I have to find some rectangular tube or channel iron that will fit the fork extensions, also have to make up some new pieces so I can modify the extensions to fit the thicker forks. The plan is just to make them captured so they fit fairly tightly. Making the jib is my next major thing to start gathering parts for, I really want to make it have some hydraulics and use a winch, but, I am not sure my timeframe will allow for this, especially with all the other **** going on in between.

I definitely made a bigger mess, but the shelves are empty and ready to move out. Tomorrow I will start setting up the double bay Lista storage wall, that way I can get some floor space back, there are drawers everywhere waiting for a home. I hope by the end of tomorrow things will be more open and less cluster facked. IMG_1553.jpeg

Been a long day, got a lot moved, will need another full day, then I can actually start putting things away. I didn't plan on spending this much time, but I was literally tripping over things and had to make some space. In the morning I am going to grab some more Lista drawers, I ran out before I could get the full cabinet assembled. Also going to be removing the rotabin for the time being, I needed to empty it to put it on a new base so it can be moved with a pallet jack anyways, at least I am moving forward...

I am at the Hill loading up some more Lista drawers, then I have to go back to the house and load up a pile of old wood then go to the dump. After that I can actually start my day and try to get the rotabin out from the corner and put up the shelving, then I can start putting stuff away. I would like to have all the piles cleaned up in the next day, I have a couple things that I would like to get done inside the shop and I need the space.

Rotabin is out, not out of the shop, yet, but out enough that the shelving is in place. Also reworked my small kitchen/office storage area and created a charging area for the Milwaukee batteries. Going to mount a few more things tomorrow, then I think it is time to put things away. I have a lot of empty/open shelves/drawers now.

I need to have space cleared today so the rest of the week can be productive inside, I have figured some of the layout for where supplies and tools are going, I am sure it will morph as I go. Right now I am grabbing a full load of supplies from the wood shop at the Hill, seems like Dad has been a bit more active in there and I do not want my stuff being “confused” for his stuff just because it is in the space. I will grab all the tools and supplies I can, but there is an entire truck load of sheet goods and other wood, so that won’t be today, not that I even have a place to put it right now.

Pictures from last night:

I try to at least have larger drawers lower, but I rarely have the exact same layout side by side. A lot of times you would either be wasting space or have to move something to the next bay that doesn’t fit where you want it. I am not a pegboard fan, it has its locations, but I generally shy away from it.

Now a simple alternator replacement has turned into a major project on the BFF, I drove it to where it is parked, but it won't run, it has started a few times, but stalls right out and I am not really familiar with the Detroit 453 engines. I know that I pulled on the "emergency stop" flap, but the spring action moves it back to open, the regular fuel shutoff is open and all linkages move freely. I had filled the fuel tank before parking it and there was a leak at the top of the tank where the filler is, but it doesn't appear to have any way to leak out completely or syphon the fuel out. I don't have a small enough filter wrench to check the fuel filters and you can't stick the tank or sight it as there is a big screen blocking the filler neck. I know it sat all last winter and I never added fuel, it started right up this spring. Go figure, just when I didn't need another project. Going to try and open the tank drain, at least I will know if there is fuel in the tank or not. Also need to go get filters and a filter wrench, then I can figure out if the filters are even getting fuel. I know that if these engines run out of fuel, it can be a pain priming them sometimes, so I may try and force feed it some diesel with a gravity system. I really don't want to do any of this today, but I do need to get it going for next week as I was trying to use it for moving some of the heavy stuff around the yard. Whatever, just another day at the Salvage Garage...

It was the "emergency stop" flap, I thought it was open, but you have to lift up, then push down on the actual flap lever, then lock it open with another lever. After actually opening it, the engine started right up as normal, only wasted about 30 minutes messing with fuel lines, next time I will know for sure.

I have about 8 totes emptied out, only what seems like a 100 or so to go...

I actually filled more totes so I could get things out of the shop, Rotabin is out, along with a bunch of miscellaneous totes and supplies that do not need to be in the shop. I think I will be lucky if I get the floor space back by the end of this week. Hopefully I can still sneak in a few of the important projects while getting this done, the bridge crane removal is steadily approaching and no matter how hard I try, I can’t slow things down…

Last night I was under the impression it was going to rain today, apparently that changed, guess I get to check off a win. I have to grab a couple supplies, but from three different stores, hopefully I can be at the Salvage Garage by 9:30 ish. I am slightly sore from the last few days, moving all the Lista drawers is a workout, I figure things will get better as I really start moving. I want to get the forks back on the BFF if possible, also trying to make a new battery tray for Perk, the plywood is almost gone and the batteries are basically just hanging there.

Unbelievably, this morning has been a turd, Home Depot has a map of the store and the locations don’t line up with the items, then come to find out, they have the same item in two locations, need to find both to get my quantity. Then NAPA says parts I want are at the “annex”, I can pick them up right now, except when I get to the annex, they say half my order is at the store I was just at. Then my lunch is made with onions after explicitly asking not to have them, waiting for that to be remade now. Hopefully that is the last thing, at least until I get to the Salvage Garage.

Very typical.

I am solo today, got a bit of a late start, my back and I are having a discussion right now about job description and what duties fall outside the guidelines. The main complaint I am hearing is that there isn't enough forklift usage and that is creating the possibility of a strike...

Respect thy inner forklift load limits.... the recovery can be more difficult than tipping upright with another forklift....

I.e. back aches can take days and weeks to recover! At least for me!

Regardless, hopefully it's a productive day... not so much on this end of things..

Today has been a bit more of recovery than anything, I have been doing a lot more mental things than I have physical things. I have a partial sheet of plywood that I am going to rip, then a 2 x 12 to cut a piece off of after that I can get the table saw put away and call it a night. My plan is to attack totes/bins tomorrow, I am going to have to do some labels as well, so there should be a bit less lifting and more sorting.

Everything is slow going, the weekend was not so great, my back won that battle. Been doing well since yesterday, the last two days have been pretty productive, things have to pick up a bit by this weekend, next week is my last week to be prepped for the bridge crane removal. We had been chasing an issue with Perk, intermittent hard start, not dependent on heat or any particular condition. Started chasing it from the wiring side, found some really dirty connections and a bad solenoid, still did exactly the same thing. Ended up pulling the starter apart and it was clear that it was the culprit, replaced the starter, starts perfectly now. In the midst of all that, I needed to rework the battery tray as it was just a piece of plywood laid over the brackets and it was sagging in a few too many spots. Of course the brackets that held the batteries in were rusty, so I sandblasted and painted those, found a bad headlight, adjusted the hood latches, and right now the side marker lights are being wired properly with nice connectors. There have been a lot of other things that we have done, little things that aren't really moving things forward, but are keeping me from tripping on stuff while trying to do some work. I am unloading some channel iron I got for the cradle that still hasn't been built, going to do that next week, this weekend I am going back down to take measurements and get my bolt sizes for the sockets, hopefully I can pull apart a couple flanges and get the natural gas heaters taken off or at least prepped. So, lots going on.
