I think I found a suitable daily driver, it will need some work, but should be less effort than anything else, price is decent and it is more in line with my preferences. I should know for sure this afternoon.

Working on assembling drawers in the Lista cabinets for a bit, then I will load Clark and haul to the Salvage Garage, I want to be ready for next week, the snow should be gone and I should have four decent days, want to button things up over there as well as get some more scrap hauled off from the Hill, should be a busy week.

Let me rephrase that, it needs some work that I can and will do without a big hassle. It is a 2000 GMC, 169k, diesel, 4.10 posi, factory bucket seats with center console (rare for a pickup). Needs exhaust work, has a check engine light on, brakes are ok, some rust, I have until Monday to decide if I want it. It comes with a nice stainless V-plow as well. So far I haven’t found anything that makes me not want to buy it. Once I clean up the shop at the Hill enough I will put it on the lift and get a much better view of any issues. From the topside it looks like a couple brake lines should be replaced, tailgate is stuck closed, one front fender and bumper is pretty bad rust wise. Price is right though, if I fix the exhaust I can drive it as is.

I am not a coffee person anyways.

I am loading up Bev so I can go back to the Salvage Garage and unload Clark, then come back to the Hill with Perk so I can load up some other forklift, not sure what one yet, but I think it will be the P80 as it will fit in the shop over there. The H110 won’t go into that shop at all, but I can drive it in at the Hill. I do need to swap the mast over to the H130, but I had enough time yet, most likely do that sooner rather than later. Other than side shift it will be a totally functional forklift, would be useful with some of the scrap for sure.

I did mount a tool box and some better mirrors on one of the new forklifts (need a name for them), I had ordered the box to put on Clark, but it fit perfectly, probably order another one for the second forklift once I get the brakes and throttle sorted out.

Yes, the burb parts are the same, best part is that the maroon burb was going to be sacrificed anyways, so I will just use more parts from it. I am still moving forward with fixing a couple other burbs and probably the Volvo as well. I am tired of not having a backup vehicle or three. This morning when I went to the grocery store to pick up food, I couldn’t unlock the maroon burb’s driver door and I had to climb through the passenger side, I am over that. I hope my Christmas present to my self will be a daily and a backup vehicle, should be doable, even with everything else going on.

You just gave me an idea, Klinger and Radar.

I think the stainless kit would be the best option, especially since some of the bad lines are the 3/16" ones that come off the master and down around the front end.

I was trying to get everything together that I needed outside from eh Salvage Garage, but I couldn't get the Nye connector (quick attach the Mitsu uses), I am going to have to use the torches to cut off the pin. The attachment plate was home made and used on an auger, the swivel bracket got twisted like a cork screw and the pins have a lot of tension on them. I might be able to get my torches out there, but it would be easier to bring the auger out front, at least easier to cut it, getting it out front is a different story. Might be able to use the track crane, then Clark.

One big fail for today was the fact that I took Clark away before getting the e-brake working on one of the new forklifts, not fun at all. When you shut it off it doesn't hold like a standard transmission, it just slowly rolls away. I should have brought one of them to the SG instead of Clark, but in my head I was going to do maintenance to them both, so it made sense to leave them up there for now, maybe not. :(

IMG_6631.jpeg

I think this was the start of an e-brake, if it does what I think (once wired up) it would basically lock the air in the chamber making the service brake an emergency brake too. I think it would be far better to just use a dual chamber air can and plumb it like a real truck. That would mean you would always have the brake on, at least until you use air to release it. Only issue is that it is pushing on a hydraulic master cylinder and I don’t know if it would be too much force on that.

I think I have a stainless brake line kit for a Burb, might have to make a couple of the longer lines, but I may just use that rather than waiting for stuff to ship. I still need to put the thing on the lift and do a good underside inspection before I go there anyways. Just remembered that I had bought the lines for another project and figured might make sense to just use what I have.

Found the brake line kit, got the auger out and just finished cutting off the ears, I hate galvanized steel, at least cutting it. I pretty much cut in the weld, but I can tell I burned some of it. It was tough not to, 1 1/2” thick plate is plenty when you aren’t dealing with galvanized.

I also forgot about my stupid torch, if a spark lands near the acetylene knob, well, let’s just say things get hot really quick, see how black it is. I have a new torch to replace it, I had it rebuilt and it still did it, just a crappy torch I guess.

Ahh the joys of a 2000 GM tailgate, the little plastic keepers that hold the pull rods to the handle have a habit of coming loose and dropping the rod out, I have a zip tie on the keeper to hold it in place. The plastic cover isn't around my pull handle anymore because of this.

I will give it a good look and check things out tomorrow night, it is going to take me a while to get it inside, I have lots of stuff in the way and another burb on the lift currently. We are supposed to get rain in the afternoon, I would like to be ready to bring it in before the rain. Today went differently than planned, so I suspect things might go a bit sideways tomorrow as well. I am just now getting ready to leave the SG with Perk and a basically empty trailer, I wanted to get one more forklift loaded, but I am not going to have enough ambition. Can't win them all.

Almost ready to leave the Hill and go home so we can start things all over tomorrow. I do feel like I got some stuff accomplished, but I don’t think things are going to really jive until early next week, I think at that point there is going to be a seriously noticeable change for the better across the board. So many loose ends are getting dealt with, ones that have been stressing me out beyond normal levels, heck almost beyond sustainable levels. Thanks everyone for going along on the ride with me!

Where the wide shelves stop is going to be a piece of butcher block, that way I have a bench area. I was really missing that workspace on this side of the shop. I have to figure out what goes where before I install the shelves, next area is going to be much slower as there are a lot more drawers to figure out.

Thanks Steve, it is a process for sure.

Almost where I can get the Burb out of the lift bay so I can bring in the truck. Glad we are getting this rain, it is going to make the road repair issues easy to see. This is what it looks like at my tower, a lot better than a couple weeks ago. Still have to dig out the corner and add some gravel it is a soupy mess.

We’re in, not ideal, but enough to make it work.

IMG_6644.jpeg

Getting the old Burb out is a pain, there isn’t really enough room to line up properly, if I ever do own the Hill, the lift will end up in the other bay, that way you don’t have to drive sideways to get in and out, would be a straight shot.

The truck frame is in decent shape, might be better than the Alaska burb, they used some sort of undercoating paint that didn’t adhere well, it makes things look really bad, but I think a pressure washer would clean off 90% of it. I can’t remember if I told you guys, I know the lineage of this truck from new and one of my friends is selling it to me. The crossover pipe has rotted through and unfortunately his dad had started to remove the manifold bolts and that was when they decided to buy a new truck ;)

Lucky for me, I am a glutton for punishment. The bed has no crossmembers left, almost amazed that the sides look as good as they do. Can is decent, just at the point where if you clean and oil it, you can get several more years out of it. Front frame looks great, no rot holes, rear had a homemade crossmember installed at some point. Overall the thing is perfect for what I am doing, it isn’t nice enough for a restoration, but it will make a nice beater truck. We valued the truck at $3k and the plow at $3k, so I will pay $6k total. I am not sure if I am going to fix the exhaust the right way, right away.

The cab corners are gone, I was looking at the rockers and they are in good shape, still worth it.

Funny thing is that the part needed to fix the exhaust properly is sitting on the floor from the Blurb.

Cab corners:

Exhaust is “fixed”, at least until the manifold side falls off, then it will leak a bit more.

I am going to have to buy truck adapters for the lift, the truck was on there, but it was at a sketchy angle.

It looks like the truck deal will happen tomorrow, going to get the plow in the afternoon. I will have to setup a brake controller and check over the wiring so I can haul my trailers, that shouldn’t be a big deal though. I am going to check with the local dealer for the rotary lifts and see if they have any of the adapters, they sometimes have used stuff for a decent price.

Just finished some office work, now I have some errands to do, then I can get back onto the Lista cabinets at the Hill, I hope to have both bays essentially cleaned out by Tuesday, then I have to figure out what I am doing with all the extra cabinets and drawers (there will be a lot), the drawers will be eventually used in the new stockroom setup at the Salvage Garage, but until then I have to figure out where to store them safely. Might just use them in one of the storage boxes at the SG, going to have to see what space I have available.
