I am still playing around with things, but the basics work the way I want, I can change the long link, but not the shortened one, so when I do the naming, I have to figure out what I want so I don't screw it up. The good thing is that it won't let me add a duplicate to the list. At this point I am going to start out using "bin", "drawer", "shelf", or "tote" followed by 001 and just keep going up by number. I can bulk add them from a CSV file, but I need to test things out with multiple names and numbers to see how it responds. I don't want to get into the thousands of redirects and then find a problem after printing all kinds of QR codes.

It is actually pretty impressive how it works, if I modify the short link it breaks the QR code (and creates a new one), if I change the short link back to what it was the original QR code still works. The basic moral of the story is that I am essentially creating a dynamic QR code that I control and that is what I wanted. I will just have to be careful when naming the short links, they need to be a bit specific for tracking purposes. In the end, they won't be super short, but they will have a built in description based on the name. I can add something like "trailer-01-shelf-001-tote-001" from that info I would know what trailer it was in, what shelf it was on, and what tote I am looking for.

The QR code will have a shortened link that I can add whatever info I want to it. So it could take a really long messy link from dropbox

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/vei2...rb4OLotA?rlkey=7hbzslevytr5cxqsgjs9dg78n&dl=0

and turn it into:

https://lok8bin.com/yourls/sg-bin-001

I can set the directory "yourls" to whatever I would like and the sg-bin-001 was just a designation for the Salvage Garage Bin 1, by doing the 001 I can make 999 in that category and have them in order, but I can easily expand the categories to fit the location. Having a short description is a good thing for future usage.

At the same time that I get the short link, it also gives me a QR code image I can download like this:

srv-2.png

The interface is very clean and simple:

As for the second question, moving things would involve a quick move of the info stored in the folder that I have created within dropbox. It is easy to do on a computer, but doable on a phone. The reason I like dropbox is that if you rename a file or change anything it doesn't break the link, most services (photobucket was a big one) if you changed anything, your link is effed.

When I print the QR codes, I can add the location info to the label, so I will be able to print lots at once and then apply them as needed.

From my phone I can take a picture and add it to the folder, or put a note in there about the contents. I am still going to play with things to figure out a good workflow, but right now it is close, very close to being ready. I have to mess with some samples from my printer, I have four or five different materials to try out, but most of this stuff will be inside, so it probably won't need anything crazy for material, the outside areas will be a bit different, I am going to have to test some of those labels and see how they hold up. Pretty excited about this as it was one of the reasons I hadn't been utilizing a bunch of my drawers in one of the trailers. I think the only trouble I am going to have will be deciding the layout of the Lista drawers, I would like to set things up so they are numbered and in some sort of order, so I kind of have to figure out what goes where or if I move things around, I may have to print new QR codes. This is not the end of the world and it may just be as simple as not numbering things at all, this would make it super flexible and I could just use magnetic labels for the contents. Then it would be as simple as changing the folder contents on drop box and moving the magnetic labels. The good thing is it will be very easy to confirm if I have thing correct by just scanning the QR code and viewing the contents. I am sure there will be some hiccups, but dealing with the quantity of stuff I have would be a nightmare for anyone.

I didn't have that as an option yet, so it wasn't truly fair. I like watzinit the best, but I don't want to type it all the time. I added that to the list. In the end it seems to be the shortest thing I can use will be the best for my purpose. I can tell you for sure watzinit isn't going anywhere, it is just a cool name regardless of the purpose.

Just spent more than an hour putting cord wrap on one section of the plasma cutter's cord. A real PITA in the location, but I wanted to get it installed. Of course yesterday when I turned things on, I got a registration message, says I have 15 days to enter a code or the software is locked down. That is going to make things interesting. I spoke to the original purchaser and he said he would help in any way, going to have to deal with that on Monday or Tuesday.

I thought that it was bad that the largest shopping mall in Maine closes at 7PM M-Sat, apparently there are worse players, COSTCO closes at 6PM on Saturday. Had I known I would have left the Salvage Garage a bit earlier, instead I walk in at 6:05 confused why the entrance is closed, I walk in through the exit and get a cart, make it part way through the store before I am told get lost we are closed. Oh well, maybe I just won't buy anything from them. Luckily I don't pay for the membership, the first time I went there to get gas I couldn't use any of my credit cards as all my business cards are mastercard and my personal on is discover, they only take visa...

lok8it.co is available, it's 18% shorter than lok8bin.com, "it" is a more flexible description of what you might be looking for than "bin", and .co domains are really cheap.

lok8it.io is also available, all the letters are even closer together on the keyboard, but .io domains are a bit pricey.

Talked to Swift-Cut and it may take a day or so, but appears they can get a code to fix my registration issues. The company that handles things is in Europe, so they need to code tomorrow morning as it changes daily. That is a good sign, hopefully it will actually work.

I am waiting on a couple deliveries at the Salvage Garage, so just do a slow clean on some of the mess. I may have my help back tomorrow, so we can try and get something done. I am sure there will be more parts to order, but I do think we can move forward on a couple projects, that would be nice.

I think they fixed it, no more request to enter the code. I am going to shut things down and see what happens later. I am still trying to adapt the dang cables I have to use the grounds without destroying the factory ends. They are a Dinse style 25 and no one stocks anything. I ordered a bunch of parts, but I do not expect anything for a few days. I guess I am making up a new ground cable for the time being.

Just knowing that the Swift-Cut staff is willing to help out a second owner of a 10 year old plasma table is a nice thing.

I have everything figured out for the ground clamp, will be able to make a few test cuts using the auxiliary clamp tomorrow. Hopefully that helps with the beveled edge, it makes sense now that I understand how the table functions a bit more. The resistance that is sensed on the ground lead is how the torch decides how high it is, so having a poor ground makes it lift higher, making the cut terrible. That is the theory anyways, I will be adding a clamp and cleaning the metal a bit more before making the next cuts. Going to do a few more mods to the table so I have a dedicated air line, going to setup a right angle die grinder with some roloc discs and also have a blow gun handy. Will have to find some tongs and a stronger magnet to pick smaller parts out of the coolant. I hope just having a bucket of distilled water will wash off the sticky feel, but it may take more than that. I am positive there will be more that I have to do to get things working well. For now I just want to make some parts.

I spent a couple hours yesterday laying out how I wanted to setup my computer space, then a couple hours tonight installing the drawers and keyboard tray. Then within five minutes I realized I hated it and had to spend another hour messing with the layout. Maybe tomorrow I can actually get it set up the way I think I want it, at least u til I change my mind again….

Ready/Fire/Aim is often a good alternative to analysis paralysis. Progress is progress. You're getting there!

The last few days I have been thinking of how I am going to transition from the two shops into just the Salvage Garage, I am starting to get my dimensions so I can lay out things. The main goal will be to not make too much of a mess and completely disrupt the SG. I will only be dismantling things at the Hill, with some basic repairs/maintenance since I still have access to the lift. This means that I can bring core tools and supplies to the Salvage Garage and also means I can start selling extra stuff. If all goes well, I should have the bulk moved before winter. Kind of taking things slowly, but once the weather stabilizes I should be able to take bigger bites.

I don't need perfection, but sitting crooked, while jammed against the wall while trying to type is not what I want.

Spent a good eight hours working with the plasma table and software. Running windows 7 is a fun endeavor for sure. I have to transfer files from my Mac rather than going online with the windows computer. After all that time I got one shape cut out and I don't even like it. I do think that we have a handle on things, trying to get letters and numbers into the dang thing was probably the hardest part. I thought that any CAD program would have text that would be integrated in, but apparently not. We started out in the software that was installed on the computer, that was a pain and didn't accomplish anything except frustrating us. Then we installed Inkscape and that was the ticket, until we imported the files... The imported file would have crazy dimensions, seemed to be a scaling issue, you needed to modify things to a .0347 to 1 ratio, made no sense at all, kept messing with the export from Inkscape, nothing helped. Come to find out the exported file was in inches and the software refused to identify that. After messing with things we got the export settings correct and now can repeat the process fairly well. The main issue is that the torch height control is still throwing errors, so it raises the torch to .262" off the piece and makes a not so great cut. We can overcome this by manually remove the torch height control, but I would prefer to have it working properly, going to do some research on that tomorrow. I hope we can figure things out, the more I mess with it, the more I find things that I want to do with it. I can tell I am going to need more steel.

Damp and cold this morning, supposed to turn over to snow soon. I think someone needs to remind winter that it is actually spring. :(

Maybe today we will get things figured out so that the workflow for the plasma table will be a bit quicker than eight hours for one piece, yup, that would be nice, maybe 7 hours...
