Don't forget to document the process, both to create folders and to create QR codes!

I have made some detailed instructions with screenshots and other info. I have added to it and I am sure I will change things again, but I should be able to fumble through the process without too much trouble based on the current info.

I'd love to be that organized, but I'm always adding new things that wouldn't fit into an existing category.

It is definitely easier just to have less stuff...

We got quite a bit done, more of a prep for the trailer load out, I am working on printing the QR codes now. I had to create a template for the smaller labels and I may have run into an issue, I ordered 1" tall labels and it looks like I would have been better off with 7/8" ones or even 13/16". They may end up being too cumbersome to install on the Lista drawer handles, I have to see if the QR codes will still work, the label ends up on a bit of a hump, hopefully it won't be too distorted to read the code. I really want to be here early tomorrow, we will see how long I end up here tonight, I still have to go to the Hill and get some paperwork taken care of.

The 1" labels will be fine, I just have to push the top of the label under the lip of the handle (they are designed to have paper labels and a plastic strip over that). So at this point I have templates to print both size labels and I can easily created several at once, then print them all out. I think there is probably a better way to do what I am doing and I am sure I will figure it out eventually, but for right now, I just need to get printing and put them to use.

I've used label software (both Brother and Zebra label printers) to generate both regular UPC-style and QR codes on labels. Drive it with a spreadsheet and Bob's your uncle.

I am trying to flexible again today, I did get the little shelter finished and now a bunch of things are undercover instead of just a tarp.

I have a guy bringing a printer to me today, going to try and set it up and make it work, if we get it working, he will leave with greenbacks and I will have a larger label printer for some other projects. Hopefully that works out the way both of us would like, at least this way I only have a little time lost and not a lot of driving. He is confident that it will work fine, at least confident enough to drive an hour and a half one way to find out.

The printer is secured, worked well enough and he provided me with a bunch of extra supplies, well worth it. Now I have a 4" and an 8" version and the best part is that they share supplies. Might sell the smaller one in the future, but for now I am going to run them side by side so I can print both label sizes without having to swap rolls of paper, I am so lazy...

The first time I called (not included in that three and a half hours) the guy hung up on me because I said a bad word, "hell". He told me he had to transfer me because I called the wrong number, I asked "why the hell did they put contact us at this number on the top of my letter?" He also said I was yelling, I was definitely not, I was confused and upset that I just wasted an hour only to have to do it again anyways. The local branch wants you to call back on the "next business day because they are too busy", seriously.

As suspected, they never called back. Going to have to make a call tomorrow and see what transpires. It is ridiculous, this all started in 2019 and there have been four different departments involved, not one of them knows what the other is doing.

For anyone that is interested in the saga...

In 2019, our main company was a C-Corp and we had a weird tax period, it went from November 1st until October 31st of the next year (no idea why and no one remembers why). C-Corps are not really a good entity for owning real assets (like towers), if you sell them you essentially get taxed twice, once as a corporation and again on the personal income taxes of the owners. An S-Corp is not like that, everything flows to the owner's taxes, so IRS only gets you once. We filed the paperwork to change our tax period and filed a short year, November 1st to December 31st, 2019, also did the paperwork to become an S-Corp, requesting the starting period to be January 1, 2020. This change over requires a 5 year waiting period before you get the advantage of the S-Corp, just so people don't think it is a simple swap it and sell everything type deal, January 2025 was the first time we were able to sell things and be treated like an S-Corp. Anyways, IRS sends confirmation back that we are now an S-Corp, but with the November 1st to October 31st tax period. Then they send another letter saying we can't file a short period unless we explain why. We submit requested info through their forms again, this time we get confirmation back that we will be treated like an S-Corp as of January 1st, 2020 and should file using an 1120-S form, everything is right in the world! We file our taxes July 15th of 2020 (thanks to the big C), I pay what is owed through the IRS EFTPS system on July 14th, 2020, we had a credit from the previous tax filing and the full difference was paid. Fast forward to late 2021 and we get a letter saying we never paid our 2019 taxes and that we did not file our taxes at all for 2020. Now to be fair, things were a bit muddied due to the changes that were made, but they were all approved by the IRS themselves. We send a letter stating we paid by EFTPS, along with the reference number, and that we filed form 1120-S (the S is important), they don't respond until 2024 and now they say we owe double what we originally "owed" and paid (on time). We send another letter, no response, until about two weeks ago, now they are going to seize all our assets and throw us in jail, I may or may not be exaggerating that a bit. I call last week to try and get to the bottom of things, apparently they are thinking that we still need to file a form 1120 (no S) for tax year 2020 with a timeframe ending October 31st, 2020... Also, they do have our tax money, but because "we didn't file" the form 1120 (no S) for tax year 2020, they "can't" apply it to the taxes owed, sure, likely story taxman. Today I got them to acknowledge that we were not supposed to file an 1120 and we did provide the 1120-S on time, so now they are applying the money that we paid on July 14th, 2020 to the 2019 taxes, phew, so it is over, right? Nope, once the tax payment is applied the woman tells me they will remove "some" of the interest and penalties that we owe, but not all of them because we paid the taxes "late". How were the taxes paid "late" you ask? Well, I don't know, I was on hold while she was getting me that specific info when the call disconnected. So I don't even know the ending to my own story and it will be a month or more before we can even find out what "interest and penalties" we will still "owe". I also don't know yet what this means as far as the asset seizure, the previous agent put us on a 6 month pay in full period with 30 days to file the form 1120 (no S). Hopefully I can get someone to finalize things, they won't give you any sort of reference number or documentation, you have to just "trust" the record to be updated based on the phone conversation. I have requested "transcripts" of our tax records, but who knows when those will show up.

The main confusion stems from the IRS giving us S-Corp status with the wrong time period, then revoking it, then giving it back to us for the requested time period. All the while the company has the same EIN and here they are accepting our tax money and documents for the S-Corp at the same time that we are out of compliance for not filing our taxes as a C-Corp. Exactly. :(

On another note, the front stairs at my house that I rebuilt have about 20% of the GRK screws (designed specifically for PT decking) snapping off flush. I am sure it is due to moisture content, but holy hell, if this had been a large deck with 20% of the screws broken I would flip out. The first boards that I noticed being loose were ones that I thought I might have left loose on purpose, but now almost every stair tread and all the actual deck boards are floating around. Not even sure can get the broken off screws out of them without trouble. I thought I was buying the best deck screw out there, guess I bought a bridge instead???

Not likely, there were no loose boards for the first months.
Is it more likely that an expanding board broke the head off a deck screw?

I would believe the chemical in the pressure treaded wood corroded the screw, if it weren’t a screw designed for pressure treated wood.

Ive used the same brand screw for a pressure treated ramp into a garage, it’s about 10 years old at this point. I snapped a few heads off building it, they still held the board to the frame. No snow and ice down here though.

In your case, I wouldn’t be surprised if the extreme temperature and moisture change didn’t have something to do with it, especially if the screws were broken.

All just theory here, I don‘t know ****.lol

Perhaps the moisture content in the wood was fairly high and it froze in the winter. When water freezes, it expands... and perhaps combined with a batch of screws with poor heat treat, snap, snap. Brittleness, etc.

What's next at the Salvage garage?

As you're looking for another brand, I've had trouble with Spax stainless losing their heads while driving them. Low on my list.
The wood used in the attic of older homes was sometimes like concrete, you had to pre drill. Using an impact driver can be a problem even after pre drilling. I ended up using a screw gun and a drill with a clutch adjustment while putting a floor in an attic.

Well, people can believe me or not, as far as I am concerned I will be buying another brand of screws from here on out.

Please don't assume that I was calling you a liar; I'm not. It's just hard to fathom given my experience with them and their reputation.

Maybe you had a bad batch? Even with their reputation I suppose GRK still has quality issues like everyone else now and then.

I am actually thinking it may be a combination of things, the boards were wet PT when I installed them, they have shrunk for sure. I think this caused some screws may have broken due to that, as the boards cupped the screws that remained were basically forced to move and more broke, this was definitely an over time thing and these stairs get more use than any deck would.

I have been swamped dealing with the office stuff, I am at the Salvage Garage today, but only for a little while. I suspect that I have another week in the office, maybe two. I am going to at least get a day or two next week at the SG, today I wanted to test out the new printer, I had to order more "maintenance boxes", basically a trash can for the wasted ink from cleaning the heads. The maintenance box and all ink cartridges have chips that lock things down, I am not too concerned about the ink, the cartridges seem to last a while and in reality they are not terribly priced if you buy them from the right place. I can get setup with generic cartridges and inks, but it is a mess and the ink stinks. Anyways, the maintenance boxes arrived and I installed them, did the deep clean and the printer is perfect. I got it at a discount because it wasn't "perfect" and the seller didn't want to invest in a new maintenance box.

Plan is to install all the printed QR codes on the revolving shelves in the storage trailer so that I can load things and not get slowed down by installing the labels. I will say that I am not going to install them perfectly, they will be off center and crooked and I am not going to give a $hit, take that perfectionism. I did try to make up a template, but no matter what I did, they were still of a bit, this was a positional thing, had I removed the drawers, I could install them pretty much perfect, but not as they sit. I am not doing that.

I need to yank apart all the electrical rails from the bridge crane, they are a pain to get apart now that nothing is holding them in place, it is a friction fit and we used visegrips and a hammer to get them apart when we took things down. I figured there would be a tool, they have one, looks like a large pair of c clip pliers, $75 didn’t seem outrageous, nicer looking than what I would make, but shipping was a lot. I looked elsewhere and it appears that the manufacturer changed designs, all the other places that sell them look worse than something I can make. I guess I am going to make my own.
