I am not sure if I am salvaging the garage, the garage is salvaging me, or I just salvage stuff and the garage stores it. I guess maybe it's all three things? I had another thread, but a freak photobucket accident destroyed all the links, almost all of the pictures too. Ironically, instead of salvaging that thread, I decided it would make more sense to start a new one, because a lot has changed since that thread was started and I think this one will be better and stronger than before. ;)

I took a walk around the shop for a few pictures, it is raining outside now and I am working inside on a cabinet project.

A lot of you don't know me, a lot of you do, either way here is a bit about me and my background:

I am 40 (just so you don't think I am a retired hoarder) and this stuff has been collected over the last 11 years. I had the basic hand tools before that, but the majority of this stuff was either traded, purchased at auctions, craigslist buys, or free. I rarely buy something new, unless it will make me money or if buying used would be too risky. I grew up on 100 acres of land and it had multiple shops and lots of outside storage. I was essentially born into the tower industry, I started climbing towers when I was little and I worked for my Father's company all through school. I built my first car at 17 from a junker with rotted out floors and a bad transmission.

I started my own company in 1999 and did well until I herniated two discs in 2004. I recovered slowly from that and started doing tower work again, then in 2010 I had a recurring issue with my hands and things went south from there.

I spent 2012 having 3 surgeries on my forearms, then the first part of 2013 in therapy for them. I just started feeling like myself again towards the end of summer 2013.

2014 was the first year that I had full use of my hands in over three years.

The last couple years have been spent working on the Salvage Garage, improving things, mostly inside, but a bit outside too. I took a bit of a sabbatical to learn more about myself, sometimes the shop is just not as important as life.

Thanks guys! I will keep working on pictures, probably have to post a bunch just to explain things to the newcomers.

Last week when I had help, I started working on removing drawers and installing them into my Lista Storage Wall system. I plan on buying more when I move my stockroom. This is going to be hard, I have to remember that a lot of you have no clue what the shop looks like on the inside. I think I may have to draw out the floor plan and then I will take some pictures.

Over the weekend I came up with a cool idea for consolidation of some of the cabinets. Lista makes things very nice, so I can easily move drawers where I want them, the problem was the fact that I was going to have a bunch of the really wide drawers left over. I thought, why not cut out some of the existing mounts and make them fit top to bottom. Here is the start, none of the steel removed is structural and this is just my trial run on one of the seven boxes that will get junked.

I think you get the idea

Thanks 1/2 Cup, I figured it was time to start a new thread, without pictures the old one was a bit confusing to anyone new.

I think you're real problem is that school bus is way too long for you and the crowd you run with.

I knew that was going to come up. The bus is being used for mobile storage right now, but I am ultimately using it for the engine and transmission. I have a worn out CAT 3126 in another truck and it was way cheaper than buying from a junkyard or rebuilding.

I like seeing the pics of the shop that aren't covered in snow. Hate that stuff. So is the lista wall going to go under the pallet racking, or what? Seems like tight packaging of listas on a wall would preclude much storage above eye level or so.

I am actually just playing around with things. The new stockroom will be under the new office, so I will not be able to have drawers that high, for right now I can, but you need to be on the stepladder to get to them. This is fine, as I am just trying to get things put away as best I can without making more of a mess. The stockroom project is going to take months to complete. The plan is to buy new storage wall uprights and set them up in the new locations, then move all the existing drawers to that location. You can't move it once it is built, it is like pallet racking, you can't just go grab a section with the forklift while it is all loaded.

I do really appreciate your posting new pictures. I had been to your old thread and I also really enjoy reading your posts on other threads. Let me say your shop area is going to be great, and with all the storage you have on hand it should be well organized. I will be a follower of your new thread as I am always interested in what is going on with all garage journal members.
Thanks again and let me say the photos are great!! With my tiny set up, I am going to have to be jealous of your large shop, storages, and outside space!!

Best Regards
Herb Spencer

Wtf is all that green? :lol_hitti

I don't think I've ever seen your place half that green, it's usually 3' deep of snow in the background!

Congrats on the new thread, I can't wait to see what happens from here out with all those new drawers. I like the full cabinet wide drawer idea too, nice!!

If you need some more room I can take all the suburbans off your hands, seriously though congratulations on the new thread and thumbs up for the progress you have made.

Don't think I ever managed to read your original thread. I know it was one on my list to get to when I had time. Tagging along on this one from the beginning though.

Welcome back! With all that green outside, I bet you have the little black flying scourge of New England in the Spring--the black fly horde!

Good to see progress, no matter how seemingly insignificant, it registers steps taken in a forward manner!

Nice problem, having too much storage available and reconfigurable! Love the full width and deep drawer case.

Thanks Herb, a lot of the time, I wish my shop was much smaller and I had a lot less stuff. Storing all these things costs time and money and some of it is not worth storing, I will be cutting back on things and trying to only store what I actually use or at the very least, things that I know.

All those Lista cabinets - treasure.
Looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks!

Thankfully no snow, but I have a lot of mud right now.

Somebody has a "lista problem" lol
Everybody's got some sorta monkey, it's all good.

It is a nightmare, but one I want to have. Lets talk again in a few weeks when I get the other storage cabinets. :eyecrazy:

Hey guy congratulations on the new thread, as always looking forward to following along.

Thanks Thumper!

If you need parts, let me know, looks like I am going to take four to make two, so I should have extras.

The other thread was pretty long, now with the pictures gone, it is almost painful to read. :(

I was hoping to get one done tonight, but I am about out of steam and I don't have the space to take apart another cabinet tonight.

A great start to the new thread. Continue to take your time with the Lista puzzle. It sounds like you have plan that will work itself out as you take time to organize all those drawers. The shop looks good outside especially with grass growing and the inside will come along in good time. Looking forward to following along.

Strouty,

I struggle with storage. Too much gives me the opportunity to collect things I don't need. Too little and I don't have places for my stuff.

And the garage space is finite. So I've been resisting getting more free storage, while needing some at the same time.

It's a conundrum.

Bill

Lista Tetris looks like fun. Also like the forklift you have. Currently I can only dream of a space large enough for a forklift and that many listas

Glad to see your new thread and look forward to what you'll be doing.

Are sure the bus is for storage? You don't own a clown suit do you?:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

I'm also living with a Vidmar/Lista blockcade in my shop. But you need to snag them when they come up.

I definitely have too much storage, I am working on getting rid of a lot of things. At least I feel like I am.

That is my "inside forklift", right now it has my medium forks on it, I need to put the smaller ones on, it is much easier to maneuver.

That was the thought process behind this deal, I was figuring it was a once in a lifetime thing.
