The rest of this month is no longer available for anything shop related. I had to decide this because it seems like not deciding is getting nothing done, especially on the real work front.

I don't want to start another thread, so I will post about my organizational trials and tribulations of the office/mind front. I know most issues are mental, but I also know they can be overcome by treating things properly, I just have not given them the proper treatment yet. I have some plans, I have had a bit of experience with some organizational theories, but I still have not been able to make it my own. David Allen and his GTD program are my favorite, right up until he says I need 46 folders that need to be reviewed daily and information has to be swapped around. I am never going to do that, if I said I could, it would be a lie. I am working on making my own system from my trusted programs and devices, but it is based off his theories.

At this point the programs that I trust and know well are:

Evernote
Dropbox
Reminders (Mac)
Calendar (Mac)
Mail (Mac)

I am working on figuring out the best to do list handler, it seems to be tough to stay with a universal program rather than one that ties into only one OS or device.

I need to keep myself in check and remember that none of these will be perfect, I just need to trust them and be able to use them fluidly. This gets balanced with how much time and effort goes into each one, no sense in working for works sake.

Strouty,

Not to add more for you to look at, but I personally use any.do for my to do list stuff. I don't have an iPhone, so I can't comment on how well it integrates with iCloud/Calendars, but it is supposed to. I do know it works superbly well with my mail and google calendar accounts. Clean interface, but has lots of options underneath if you want to dive in. I think the simple look is what keeps me using it - doesn't bog me down with unnecessary stuff. Just another option to look at. Hope that helps.

Today I may actually move some of the shop stuff around, I need to make a big flat surface to work on my plans for the tower project. I am going to put two of the Lista cabs with stainless tops back to back. Should be a decent enough work surface, could even do three of them.

It is a consulting thing, I have lots of paperwork to do by next Friday. This is for the permit, then I get to build the tower. Location is secret. :ninja:

Ahhh... "that" tower... good to know they are moving forward with it.

I thought you disassembled all the stainless tops off the cabinets... good to hear you still have a few that are functional. Man I would love to have a flat work surface bigger than 2 foot by 4 foot... other than my driveway if I move all the cars.

I could use the floor.

The tops are all off, but I can slap one back on fairly quickly. I am running out of time, supposed to have a meeting in like 15 minutes and all I did was clean up a bit. At least the meeting is with my Father, maybe he will take pity on me and help me out for a little bit?

I doubt it, either way I will report back later, people have been surprising me lately.

No help, oh well.

This ended up being our desk for the drawings.

I spent the day doing paperwork, making phone calls, sending emails, and organizing all the information I have collected. Today I have to really start assembling things. I am going to add the battery disconnect to the excavator so that I can see if the batteries will survive or if I have to replace them. They are oldies (2009), but they are also big ones (4D), so they usually last a while. I actually think I could modify the tray to fit 8D batteries, those tend to last 15 or more years.

Strouty, the task management thing can be a big struggle especially when you have numerous interests besides job, family etc. If you like GTD but want to modify it to fit your flow I would suggest 2Do for task management. It's IOS specific but you can sync across multiple devices using Dropbox. If you want a multi platform todo I would suggest Wunderlist. It's free and uses its own servers to sync across devices.

The only thing that seems to work for me in using task management is to prioritize and not overload myself. I try to limit or keep the number of tasks per day to a number that I "can" accomplish including unscheduled interruptions etc not that I "want" to accomplish. Psychologically it keeps my momentum going when you knock off a day's list but more importantly my focus on those tasks is better. Just an old guys take on a long time struggle.

It is definitely a struggle.

After the latest Photobucket fiasco, I am leery of opting for a free service. Right now I am leaning towards Todoist as it currently has a paid subscription model with lots of current users. Even if the price goes up, it would still be worth it and I don't see it being a crazy high increase anyways. I have not played with Nozbe enough, but it is a lot more expensive.

Hey Strouty, how's it going? Haven't been around in a while and found that you started this new thread a couple months ago.

There it is... right there in the second pic of post 585. Sitting there in all it's neglected glory. Just box it up, and send it to me. LOL!

I am so tempted, maybe we could trade something? It does need to go to a good home.

I moved it twice since then, it is now tucked in a shelf with the office supplies.

No updates, it has been really crazy with the tower application that I have been working on. Literally just finished it about 10 minutes ago. I am now going to hang out here and bring it directly to the Town Hall, they open at 7:30 and it is due by 9:00, so I might as well get it over and go to sleep. I have a couple more weeks of fun paperwork and meetings, but I should be able to sneak in some shop time, hopefully it will be some QST!

Here is the TXT and my mess of papers. I still need to setup my packet, but I need some thicker paper, so I will finish it up tomorrow.

I didn't actually count the pages, but I think it was probably around 100, I thought it was going to be like 60, maybe 70, but it was more than I thought. Trying to figure out how best to organize it was the worst part. I had to reference exhibit numbers and keep it all straight. If the architect and surveyor had finished things sooner, I would have been done a long time ago. I thought we were finished on Wednesday, but after meeting with the Town Planner, there were lots of changes that needed to be made and a bunch more info requested. The good thing is I was told it is one of the best site plans they had ever dealt with. That was before I made changes and corrections. So I didn't have a final product until 4:30 on Friday and then I had to address the support info the Town Planner asked for, plus make changes to my other documents, and.............................:eyecrazy:

At least it is done, now as long as I don't have an accident on the way to drop it off....................... ;)

Really? Let me think...
I've probably got a couple new cordless Milwaukee tools around here somewhere that I'd be willing to offer. I bought several different kits awhile back in order to get some extra batteries and a couple tools that I didn't already have. It was cheaper to buy the kits on sale, than the individual bare tools and extra batteries I wanted. I'll find them if you think you'd be interested.

I'd love to have it. I built one about fifteen years ago, and used an E-Maxx for the radio gear, motors and transmission. Played around with some different bevel gears to get the right gearing. Then added a battery tray and trans adapter kit from Thunder Tech Racing. Played around with the battery tray placement to get it balanced pretty good. But I never did adapt the axles for the HPI savage dampeners. I still have them around here somewhere...

What's new Strouty? Hopefully you've been able to do more with your boxes than I have. My only progress was to squirt 3-4 wasp nest out of mine:lol_hitti

Insomnia has it's advantages.

Discovered and read then new thread tonight.

Wow. I followed your old thread. Seems like not long ago you were playing Rubik's cube with broke vehicles and scrap in the shop now your arranging all matching blue Listas. The old saying inch by inch it's a cinch comes to mind. I've read your post were days went by and you were in pain but went to the shop with a goal of accomplishing something no matter how small. Now you are stringing a bunch of productive days together and looks like things are going your way.

Someone mentioned the oriental philosophy of putting things in order and making a more harmonious feeling. I think that's part of what Jack Olsen's garage has going for it. Your shop is on the way. The common color scheme (whether it is green or lista blue) helps with it.

I've suffered injuries and arthritis is in my hand and shoulder as a result. Cold doesn't help. To have gone through the surgeries you have and be in cold weather means you are tough. Hang in there. The shop is looking good. One final thought. Screw photobucket for what they did to everyone's threads.

Been very busy with the tower project, almost all paperwork and meetings. I have really not done much of anything to the shop and frankly it is a mess right now. Over the weekend I tried to fix some leaks on the bucket truck, but found that I have to have special order hoses and a part that has yet to be identified. My first hose should be made today, but I need to replace the other part before I can add any fluid, once that is done, I can maneuver the boom, support it, then remove the second hose and get it replaced. I hope to have things up and running by this weekend so I can do some painting at the MIL's house. I had to make some a wrench to undo the hydraulic line, it was ridiculously tight quarters.

I think Jack Olsen's garage definitely meets the criteria for harmonious, mine may be getting there, but I still have a long ways to go. This winter will be a good chance to spend time doing things to the inside of the shop, I expect it to really start coming together for next year.

It'll happen Strouty. Sometimes we have to put work ahead of what we really want to do.

So is there a start date on the new tower job?

I have another planning board meeting mid September, after that I have to wait for the FCC approval (historic and tribal). We are also fabricating a bunch of steel for the tower, I would say if construction starts November 1st, things are going well.

Last week I got to do a bit of actual work, not in the shop, but at least it was something.

This week I am working on cleaning up the shop and getting things together for the auction. I can start bringing things over on the 25th, so I have two weeks! I have been feeling vindictive as of late, at least with stuff. I traded in my green tool cart, I had tried to be a "tool cart guy", couldn't make it happen. I just ended up not knowing what was in the cart and what was in the box, it was a bit of self created insanity. I am now working through the mess of tools that have been scattered over the last few months of mischief. Apparently I don't like to put things away! I will be setting up a few of the lista cabinets to keep, but 6 of them are going either on Craigslist or to the auction, my best guess is the auction, I don't really have time to deal with individual sales and I definitely don't want to store them for the winter. I will post up some pictures of the current state of affairs, warning, it is not pretty.

On September 19th, I should have made it through all the hoops with the Town so the tower project can move forward, but you can never trust the Planning Board, I do have my fingers crossed. Once that is completed, I will have some more free time to work on the shop itself.
