Based on the old pics and new ones I'd say you've made really good progress. Couple that with everything you are disposing of now and you're on the way to a very organized shop this winter. Keep up the work you are doing now to sort and get rid of things you don't use or need. the labeling of your storage drawers will help a lot on the future to keep the general mess from re-appearing.

I have only labeled half the drawers, I keep getting sidetracked. After lunch I am labelling the rest of them. It is great, because I am finding empty drawers, or ones that can be consolidated. Once they are all labeled, then I can concentrate on all the ones labeled MISC. There are several of those.

Almost all the drawers are labeled. I need to fill the empty ones and label those as well. Just about have all the shelves emptied, well the ones that I was removing. If I do the office closet, I can setup three of these shelves, then transfer everything over. It will make things a lot easier that way. Pictures to follow.

Still going slowly, but I feel good about it for a change. Each little step is getting me closer to the goal. I also have several things to bring out to the conex and for once, I know I have enough room to walk down the aisle and put something away!

I am going to try and empty all 9 of the shelving units that I need to move, once those are gone, well they will be gone. Then I can start putting the Lista cabinets in there, the hope is that there will actually be a bit more room in that area. Enough to start messing with my RC stuff again, I have missed that so much.

I don't really have a plan on how I am going to lay things out, I measured and figured out a few directions, but I want to clean it out and see what things really look and feel like in place. Unfortunately this area is also a "hallway" to get to my office, so I can't lay it out the way I would if the office was not there. I thought about changing the office entry to fix this problem, due to the fact that I am moving the stockroom to the other end of the shop, it just doesn't make sense to make those modifications. So I have to deal with it the way it is for a while. If things go well this fall, I will have saved enough money to get all the Lista storage wall supplies so I can move forward with the stockroom move, that would be awesome. I think realistically, it will be April or May before I am ready to do that, but it can't hurt to dream, right?

I (try to) never label with MISC or "Sharp Stuff"... or "They Spin"... I just add more labels ... some drawers/boxes have 5 or 6 labels on them.

Laundry... wear clothes inside out... wear girl friends clothes... skip some clothing... you need to set priorities...

When I was in college... several people showered in their clothes... to skip the need to waste quarters... We would sit outside on beach chairs to dry...

Also... showering with clothing does not remove the need for applying deodorant. It was a rough few weeks till we learned that.

I prefer to launder the clothes separate from the body.

I got a few extra minutes of time, my GF started the washer for me.

I am researching mini-splits for my 90 square foot office. I really want it more for heating, but the AC will be nice as well. I want to put one in the house, so this may be a good first step in learning about them.

Another thing that I talked about way back when is the applications I was trying out for task management. I have been loving todoist, it works on all platforms, has a cheap yearly fee and syncs well. The feature keep getting better and I am learning new tricks every day. I would highly recommend it, there is a bit of a learning curve, but once you play around it becomes a bit more intuitive.

Another GJ member has always inspired me whenever they post projects, so I finally found something that is worthy of a "Royce inspired project". It may be a while before I start it, but now I have a vision. This is what will be the base of my offset vise stand.

and I just happened to have "Daves world" install mini splits at my place about 3 weeks ago. The a/c work's well in last weeks heat, now with these cooler evenings, the heat is just as good. Maine has a $750 rebate for a home, not sure about your shop. Is this auction this week and where is it?

It was in the back of a truck my buddy bought at auction. The thing is brand new. I originally wanted to make it into a mirror, but I figured that would be a waste, even though it would be the coolest mirror ever.

My back is giving me a bit of grief this morning, so I am deliberately going slower. I owe you guys some pictures too. I have been working through my projects, making a list of them, with included "next actions" or steps. Once this is put in the list, it seems like it drops off my mind. I am enjoying that feeling. One of the many books I have read says that your brain is for thinking, not storage. How true is that? So my goal is to get all that stuff out of my brain and into my new program (todoist) so that I can think clearly again.

I have to get moving again, been in the office since about noon. My competition on the tower project did not submit their application for October, that makes up for some of the time I lost earlier. By the time I am done with them, they may think twice about having a tower at all. Billion dollar corporations, pfft, I ain't skeerd. The funny thing is the excuse they gave was a stupid one, besides all they had to do is copy my application and they would be complete, really I did all the work for them.

I would have been tickled pink if a multibillion dollar company copied what I did. They come to every meeting I have, they fly someone in from out of state, just to see little old me.

Today was a lot less productive than I had envisioned. I am going to work a bit more and try and get things set for tomorrow. I have not forgotten pictures, I just think things have not changed enough to make it worth posting them yet.

One thing I can clearly see is that I don't want any shelves in the shop, unless they are pallet rack with wire decking. The dust that these have collected is amazing. All will be cabinets or drawers moving forward. That is good, as I can sell the shelves that I do have. I am currently moving all my "eBay" items to a place in the conex, at least there I won't be tripping over them all the time.

It's really great to see your progress. You'll get to this point where you'll start reaping the benefits of your work and the payoff is really enjoying the space. I can attest to this because I've gone through it (albeit on a smaller scale). Small messes or bits and pieces without homes are much easier/quicker to deal with, now.

Today should be a big step, I am almost ready to start pulling out the gray shelving units from the stockroom. Once that happens, I can move the Lista cabinets around, that will free up a bunch of shop floor where I need it most. I do think I am just going to put the big table outside, it has been used twice in the last two years, while I don't think getting rid of it is a good idea, I do not think it has earned a place inside the shop. I will paint the underside and legs first, then I guess I can use some of my metal protector over the top. Not sure if I should cover it with plastic, I have some corrugated metal left over, that may be the best thing. Eventually I would like two smaller benches that can be bolted together if needed, this way they are more versatile and won't take up as much space as the 5' x 10' one.

I just can't win, still ended up going in the right direction, but did not get the shelving units out yet. I hope to have them out tomorrow night. I did get them almost entirely emptied so they will be ready to go. Also tossed about two thirds of the stuff that was in the cabinets from the MB dealership. I have more things in my car to donate, the truck has things that are going to my Dad. Tomorrow I am headed to his place to look over what needs to be fabricated for the tower we are building. Then I will be headed to the shop, hopefully before lunch.

Interesting thought on getting rid of all the open shelving. I've been thinking of going that way with my shop but couldn't justify it with just "it looks cleaner". Still, the idea kept nagging me. Reading about your experience I think just made the decision, it really IS cleaner!

Looks like decent progress to me. I sometimes think people give you Attaboys too often for too little, but in this case even the thread curmudgeon agrees.
I do think some people (such as you and I), need seasons to get us motivated. I can't know all the things you did this summer, but this looks to be the most action in several months, even accounting for the timeout for tower design. It all happens because we know we are soon going to be cooped up indoors.
I also have been at it. To use one of your measures of space, I have used up, burned and tossed a Suburban full in the last two weeks, and a (small) trailer of scrap metal is going this weekend. Tis the season!

Agree 100% and having lived on a dusty dirt road for many years everything on open shelves just gets a coating. In my new garage I have minimal shelves and will not add many more. I'm planning to go more of the cabinet route with doors or drawers for storage of necessary items. I'm also looking at putting most if not all cabinets on wheels so I can either move them around as needed or just to pull away form the wall and sweep up more easily. The real key however seems to be the purging of all the excess but unnecessary stuff we all collect. You are doing a great job of that right now and gaining space while getting organized.

Well the steel that was supposed to be delivered yesterday didn't get delivered, so the tower will have to wait until tomorrow. That is a good thing as it gives me a better excuse to avoid the auction. I did get to bring back an empty oxygen cylinder, it is one I own and they have to send it out to be filled, so it takes over a week. I also talked to them about an acetylene tank that I have, I either need to get it so I can use it or dispose of it. I have a few other gas cylinders, but those are slated to be wind chimes.

RM, In the conex, there is no dust on things, at all so that will be my place to have open type storage. I will even move my rotabin out there.

This morning, I moved a couple bungee cords, then I saw a few more and a few more. So I gathered them all up and tried to find a place for them. I was just about ready to put them somewhere, anywhere, when I remembered that in the conex there was a milk crate that had bungee cords in it. I went to the conex and put the bungee cords with the rest of my tie down equipment. Felt good to have a place for them. Now I just need a better way t store them.

I found more bungee cords, I shifted more items around and now I am just about ready to start pulling the shelving units outside. I even listed them on craigslist. I probably priced too high, but hoping to get someone that wants them all for a deal. I stated that in the ad, so it was clear.

I got tangled into a bit more of the tower, had to do some things to deal with the leases. No problem as it is all billable hours. Still trying to figure out what to keep, sell, scrap, or trash. I was told my dumpster would be emptied today, fingers crossed, I know if it is empty, I will find something to put in it.

The picture of all the plastic bins reminded me that I have a couple boxes of those in one of the sheds that the wife picked up at a sale for me. Might have to dig them out before snow to have handy in the shop, I have quite a few of the cardboard versions with stuff in them from auctions and they need to be replaced.

Around here, okay actually in town if I put those shelves outside when I came out in the morning they would be gone and I live in what is considered a "good" neighborhood.

I decided to do a few things that I was not planning on doing, looks like with a bit more shuffling I can make things work very well with almost no modifications. At this point I would like to do as little work as possible, I figure there will need to be adjustments when everything gets moved to the other end of the shop, so why do things twice? I could be wrong and may still need to do a few things, but I think my perfectionist attitude needs to just stop, that has slowed me to a crawl more than anything else, that and the fear of success. I think I may be able to have a working shop by this weekend, that would be a nice change. I am going to stay late tonight, tomorrow may be a lot shorter than I would like and Friday is two thirds gone as well. I have a lot of stuff strewn everywhere in the shop, but really looking at it, most of it is empty or almost empty containers from all the sorting I have done.
