Got the parts made up, clearly one of my cutters is crappy, I could make the facing shine like a mirror, but not the sides.

On garagejournal you buy new tooling for the Bridgeport and make the hardware.

I need to tear down the Kurt vise as it is all messed up, the rebuild kit is like $11, so I will be buying that for sure.

As for the chuck, probably could give it a cleaning. I am also looking at a 4 jaw chuck that has independent adjustments, that should allow me to better center the round stock.

Today I had a leaking gas pump on the crane, now I need to change that. I remember when these pumps were common and you could buy them anywhere, now they are not as easy to get. Will have to pick one up tomorrow from the store nearest the warehouse. Nothing like having gasoline spray all over the place, especially when it hits the exhaust manifolds.

The chuck will clean up nicely with WD40 and some purple Scotch Brite. I just did one yesterday and it came out nice.

As long as you do all operations in one gripping, the chuck having a little lope will not make a difference. It will matter if you swap ends on the part or if you remove it from the chuck and then put it back in.

A cutter that has a point will produce a grainy finish. A very slightly rounded tool will give a smoother finish.

Luckily, when I had to put it back in the chuck, I was just removing more material from the wides part, so it won't bother anything I am doing. The funny part is that when I put it back in, it was close enough that I thought wow, that is close enough.

I am going to be buying inserts, but I figure right now I just need to decide on BXA or CXA tool post. I wish I had a CXA to measure. May have to ask the forum members.

As for the lathe, I went BXA, should be fine for the machine I have.

Today went and looked at the house behind my shop, talking to the owner about buying it as is. I have a contractor (my brother) coming to look at it this week, early impressions are not terrible, I will most likely overpay for it to ensure it is me that owns it and not a neighbor that can complain about my shop. The house has been vacant and the place had hoarders living there, so lots of trash, lots of cleaning, but the bones look decent.

Fixed the GF’s car, she had a headlight out, took payment for the work in trade.


You guys need to get your mind out of the gutter, she bought me an ice cream.

I have been trying to get my new climbing belt setup, need to order some new pouches, the old ratty ones makes it look like when a guy buys a brand new $40k truck, then uses 2x4s to build a rack. On a good note, it is awesome and was worth all the money, most expensive belt I have ever bought. Luckily Zoro sells them and I had a 20% off coupon code, so it saved me a chunk of change. This belt has a spine, it actually takes the weight off your shoulders like a backpack with a frame. Considering how much the equipment weighs and the fact that you are always reaching up, it should make a HUGE difference in climbing. I can’t feel any restrictions to range of motion, only concern would be trying to squeeze through tighter spaces, it could be a problem then, but I won’t know until that situation comes up.

Good thing on buying a new belt. All for keeping you safe. I manage to do that by staying on the ground. That tower work is one job that does not pay enough for me to climb them.

I have been doing it so long, it doesn't bother me, but I respect the risks for sure. The old belt was rated for 300 pounds, by the time I have tools and gear on, I am closer to 350. The new belt is rated for 420, but I do need to upgrade my y lanyard, although I suspect that all they are doing different is adding a tag that says rated for 420 pounds. Most of this stuff is so overbuilt with safety factors it wouldn't be an issue in a fall. It is more about arresting the fall, worst case is you feel more jolt when you stop and maybe the lanyard tears out a few more inches. When I did my rescue training we tested out some old fall arresting equipment, even with my weight I didn't tear out the stitching to its limits. The thing they are allowing now is attachment at your feet due to the wind turbine industry, this results in essentially a 12' fall and that is almost double what we should ever encounter on a tower.

The climbing belt worked fairly well, still need to make a few adjustments. I think the only real issue I had was that the "spine" was too high and it made it difficult to look up the tower when I was in a working position, it was almost like a headrest in a car. I will keep tweaking it, but I think it will be better than my old setup.

No real shop work for until Thursday at the earliest, then Friday I am supposed to inspect a little itty bitty tower. I think it is 48' tall, may not even be able to climb it as there are concerns that one anchor is pulling out of the ground.

I am busy ordering parts for the mill and lathe, more fun for later!

You have heavy equipment... buy the house, and bury it. Oh wait, you can't do that anymore... then just use a tracked D9 sized front end loader and keep dumping it into a semi trailer to haul the whole damn thing off.

Going up in a wind tower was a bucket list item for me. i was pissed they wouldn't let me climb... I had to take the elevator. I wanted to climb!

In the end, both my GF and I don't like the current house at all. Taxes are too high, city is like a mini California wannabe, and there is not enough space. My GF's commute would be almost identical depending on the time of day and my commute would be significantly shorter for the shop, but it would make the new office a long commute. No big deal, I plan on limiting office time, currently working on remote access for most things, so I can do what needs to be done almost anywhere.

So, it's hot out today, humid, the office has an AC that keeps tripping a breaker, not sure what is going on, but it *****. Low cool, about half temp, blowing luke warm air is all you get before the breaker gets tripped. The cord doesn't feel hot, the AC appears to be the only thing on the circuit, will have to do some investigating at some point, but I am headed to the bank, then the lunch, then I will be at the shop for a bit. Some of my Aloris tool holders showed up for the lathe, should be more arriving this week. Unfortunately I will probably not have much time to use them, I need to get my bus cleaned out, I ended up selling it with the other busses my friend bought, kind of a package deal. In reality, I will have no profit, but I did get to use it for storage for almost two years. I am glad it will be gone, but the timing kind of *****, got to do what ya got to do, right?

I guess I won’t complain about the office anymore, I feel like I went swimming and I have only been outside for an hour or so changing the fuel pump on the crane. The sun isn’t even out, I actually could pour sweat out of the nitrile gloves when I was done. It was gross.
