Strouty, you could build a low rider caster base and then use something along the lines of the item in the following link, or a couple of De-sta-co clamps to load against the floor to hold the machine in place. Since all pushing against the saw is sideways, you could weld up or use two straight casters on the right end, along with two swivel type on the other, along with a floor lock. Only one lock would be needed then.

That's a sweet drill press. Big drills are very handy to have.

For your reference, drill presses are sized like a lot like lathes, by the max diameter of a round work piece you can drill to the center of. So, a 20" drill press will be able to put a hole in the center of a 20" diameter piece. Easy way to find out is to measure from the column to the center of the spindle, then multiply by 2.

I think if I used the old gang drill press base as a desk, it would fall through the floor, it still weighs about 3000 pounds. On the bright side, it is adjustable height and the drain channel would keep my pens from rolling on the floor. :)

RJ, thanks for the link, I had not seen those before. I am thinking something quicker since the bandsaw doesn't need to be level.

Dr Clyde, I learned that last night, I had no idea that was how they were sized.

Pines, it would be one cool lamp for sure!

Spent a smidge if time at the shop tonight, but it was to load up Bev for a job I have tomorrow, kind of made a mess of things. This weekend should allow me to catch up a bit, next week is already looking busy, actually things are looking busy until thanksgiving, so shop time will be limited to bad weather and stolen time for a while.

I know I said I would post info on the house behind my shop, but I have not made an official deal yet, Monday I am meeting with the owner so we can actually figure things out. Should be interesting, she has not seen the house in a few years and it is a mess.

Those are called universal machines. They are getting fairly rare now. Lots of info at vintagemachinery.org or owwm.org

Strouty, out of curiosity I Googled "floor lock cart" and got a page from Caster Connection .net as the first response. (can't post a link as I'm too new here yet). Reasonably priced IMHO.

One of these just traded hands a the fall OWWM get together.

On the band saw, if you really need to be able to move it around, I think I'd be more inclined to raise it enough front and back to get a pallet jack under it and use that rather than casters and floor locks.

Ron

I have my DoAlls on pallets for ease of moving, but my situation is different than yours. I have no forklift, a small work space (comparatively), and a probable exit date from this property. That said, if I was standing on the floor and not the pallet edges, the table is a bit high for larger items.

Just unloaded, did not get the big drill, no room on the truck, will be buying it, but more for the drill bits than anything. It has a Morse taper #4 and drill bits up to 2”. It runs off a big flat belt, but I think it could be updated to run off a variable speed reeves drive.

Cool! How big is that motor? Is it VFD-able? Keep the mechanics as is an fine tune speed as needed?

The motor for the drill is smaller, like 5 HP, it could be run on a VFD, but I think I may just use a single phase, will see how easy it is to adjust speeds, may be that I want to be able to fine tune things.

My new rotary phase converter idler, probably a 40 HP, will run two 15 HP motors and any combination of 10 more HP at the same time.

BMF, did not know that.

Will be at the shop a little later, yesterday was a long day, had to run a bunch of cabling through conduits and then up the towers. Owner ordered parts and didn't realize the tower legs were smaller at the top, so no go on the new antennas. Unfortunately, I was so busy all day, I took no pictures. I will take some when we go back, should be less of a **** show then.

I pulled them from the “old stock”. These really are the last two cabinets that I have, honest.

I needed wheels on the cabinet, but the bases didn’t fit the casters, so I used my nutsert tool to install some threaded inserts. Now I can unbolt the casters if I need them to be on the legs again. I am going to install two floor locks and see how they work. And yes, these casters were ones from the auction. ;)

I need to pull out the drawers in the Lista cabinets, the center portion is tweaked, so the drawers don't open and close properly on one side, that is why these cabinets were not in the shop. I hope I can do it without making things worse, I do have a plan, so we will see.

I have to get the main bay cleaned up so I can get Bev inside, need to do an oil change and some tweaking to the storage body and it is supposed to rain tomorrow.

It got really cold here Thursday through this weekend and raining. So that is motivating me to throw the plywood up on my walls and get some insulation blown in the walls in the garage. I had ben waffling back and forth if on it, but I really need to do it, even if we're only here for another 2 winters.

It's still raining and will be raining through Tues.

I hate it when my day starts late, feels like it already over, yet I have done almost nothing. I guess since I needed clean clothes, laundry has to count for something. Now I am off to look at a knuckle boom truck, I don’t care so much about the truck, but the boom is a pretty nice one and it is priced right. My brother bought it, then bought another truck that he likes better and just wants out from under it.

Sounds like our material handling is similar with the Clark ranger and now a knuckleboom! I would
Like a small forklift like you have for more maneuverability but I am fighting the urge as shop space is increasingly smaller as I add toys
I hate leaving stuff outside so the ranger, the flatbed knuckleboom and the jlg 40’ boom lift take up 1/2 the shop
I did draw the line at the 3 or so dozers

Once I get the knuckle boom, I need to figure out exactly what I am doing, I have a bigger crane truck that I should sell, but I would like to use it to install the knuckle boom on the new truck. I am considering putting the knuckle boom on the F700 crew cab, but the specs make me think I would need to have a lot of wheelbase behind the cab, 10’ to be exact and that will make the truck much longer than I want. I have not investigated if the boom can be rear mounted, but I suspect it would significantly reduce the capacity.

The good thing is that it is fully operational and I can use it around the yard, that will let me decide what I want to do with it.

My bed is 14 or so. I wanted a dumping flatbed but the price was right on the flatbed/liftgate/boom. Now that I am using it, the liftgate is probably a better fit for me

My brother just built a 4x4 F550 with a knuckle boom and dumping flat bed, he does a lot of tree work and it is perfect for him, he was going to use the bigger truck, but decided he didn’t need one that big and if he needed bigger it would be a tri axle log loader, not a single axle knuckle boom. He is going to install a rotating grapple on the F550, then it will be perfect. I guess I am glad as the F700 with the National N95 boom is a good size for me. It only reaches 26’ hydraulically, then it has two manual sections, that gets it to 39’ and it can still pick 1850 pounds anywhere in a 360 patter, provided the truck is the right setup. I currently have a National 600 series that goes hydraulically to 56’ and then jib sections to 96’, but I rarely use the reach anymore and you have to two part the winch after 5000 pounds, where the knuckle boom can pick 6400 pounds at a 14 foot radius. I figure this will be my first step and I will most likely end up having a larger knuckle boom. What I really want is a hooklift truck, that would be the most versatile for sure. As essentially a one man show, registration for multiple trucks ***** and trailers get expensive, plus maintenance, one truck with several bodies would be awesome.

You have me thinking I need to find some column lifts instead of installing my two post mohawk lift, it is a 15k capacity, but the columns are so much nicer than a fixed setup.

Got the Lista cabinet setup in a useful way, Pines will be mad, no top drawer, but it is a temporary thing anyways, may end up stealing one from another cabinet, just depends on what my needs are.

1c00ab662497b4f58a8a4cba63d0f7d1.jpg

I guess this cabinet would lock itself, they had cut access to the latch mechanism, then they removed one side of the drawer locks completely.

The floor locks work, but they had to stick out a bit, not sure this could be avoided.
