Seriously. I've been leading the Great Boyd Family Purge of '17 that has continued into the Great Boyd Family Purge of '19. Started in prep for our move from our suburban house of 20+ years to our new suburban house with a much smaller garage.

The Great Purge has really been great. Much smaller scale then most of you, especially you small business guys with all of your equipment and supplies, but the urge to hoard is strong with me, and the net results are the same: paralysis, wasted time considering what to do with stuff, wasted time looking for stuff, just wasted time and energy.

Of course I was happy as a clam to re-use an old dirt bike skid plate from my long gone '06 Husky WR125 on my new to me '18 Alta MXR dirt bike (electric dirt bike, OMG, it is insane, I love it, LOL).

I had tried to give the skid plate away but got no takers, and just could not bring myself to throw it away. Glad I kept it as I wanted to ride my new Alta which did not have a skidplate, but not without some type of skid plate on it. Found my old Husky plate, some duct tape to protect the frame rails, a couple of the brackets more or less fit, some large zip ties and I was all set!

A win for the hoarders! Lol.

Have since rec'd the correct fit aftermarket skid plate and fitted it up. Yeah me.

The hold Husky skid plate is back in my garage, I think its kind of mocking me now, Lol.

F451, now the skid plate can never be tossed, in fact you probably owe it more than it owes you! The electric dirt bike sounds cool, I recently bought a newer RC truck with a fancy brushless motor and huge LiPo batteries, I am going to sell all my old nitro stuff now.

X, some relatives it feels that way, but never with my Brother, when he and I get to gather, it is like everything is instantly rescheduled. I wish I could spend more time with him.

Got two good loads out of the warehouse, now the shop is stuffed with copper, still more that I have to pick up too.

Also forgot to mention, I bought a dump trailer this afternoon. It was on Craigslist for an hour, great deal and the guy is delivering it to me on Wednesday. It will be nice to not have to borrow one all the time, in fact, this one may get borrowed by my brother, talk about flipping the table. I would be glad to have something he wants to borrow, he helps me out with that all the time.

Lastly, today was 60 degrees and tomorrow it is going to snow.

Thanks guys, it should be very useful, it will haul about 5 tons legally. I plan on making some sides for it, since I mostly haul brush, trash, and scrap.

Snow is on the ground, shouldn't hang around long, just annoyed that it is snowing.

I have some office work to do, then this afternoon I need to get back over to the shop so I can start prepping copper, would be nice to take a load home so I can drop it off Tuesday, but I may wait and try and bring it in all at once, sometimes they will give you a better price for a larger quantity. Will be calling around for prices today too.

14k, but the trailer weighs 4400, previous owner told me he could haul and dump 6 tons of stone dust. He bought two new ones last year, at a cost of about $9k, I felt like I did well to pay $3,300, most of the other dump trailers I have seen are rusted out and 60% of the new price. This one will need tires this year, a good day of cleaning and paint, but it is otherwise ready to go. When I showed up to look at it, I got to see his equipment, he took very good care of things and that made the deal even better.

Yes, Lol, that skid plate, I think someone gave it to me in the first place, so its owned its keep for sure, unless I happen across another '06 Husky 125 owner that needs one, but they are a rare breed now.

And very cool you are close to your brother, my 3 brothers and I are very close and I feel fortunate for that. -Ed

I am at the bank, check out the parking job, I know this is a difficult vehicle to park, probably requires a special license to drive. If I explain anything about the driver, I will instantly be labeled a sexist and a racists with some other bad qualities thrown in.

In Florida that's how you park if you don't plan to use reverse. They get in, rev it up and drive straight through the building. Usually it's an old Town Car or Fleetwood.

Do you just store and use that copper pipe? I hope its not destined for scrap, that looks to be a lot of feet of good pipe. Or is it all used once and cannot be reused for the same purpose?

The dump trailer is pretty cool and should be a handy tool for you.

The copper is all scrap, may save a fire small sections for fun projects, it is old transmission line from a TV tower and can’t be reused without major reworking and I don’t have the space to sit on it and wait for a customer to buy it.

I started hacking up some of the inner parts, it is all different, some has brass pieces inside and some has really thick copper pieces.

RM, the copper pipe may be a bit deceiving, some of it is about ten inches in diameter and some is about four inches in diameter, I can’t think of a good use for it, at least not one that would be worth more than the scrap value. Did you have some use in mind that I am not seeing?

Trailer got delivered this morning, but seller wrote his name and address into the section to transfer it to me. Now I have to go to DMV and get another form for him to fill out to fix it, I knew I should have said not to do anything with the title until I see it. Stinks, because I can't register it until this issue is fixed, kind of negates the delivery of the trailer. Oh well, this is the story of my life.

No I didn't have any other use in mind just did't see exactly if it was very old or not and was not sure if scrap was the best action. But from your description it makes better sense that recycling is probably the best thing to do. It will get a new life in some other product and net you some bucks in the process.

I wonder, maybe if you cut a small piece of the 10in, then cut through that, you could pound it flat? a sheet of copper could have lots of uses? hhhmmm do up a few like this, they would store flat, in a drawer...

Maybe use it to make soft jaws for a vise or pliers or pipe wrench? make some one-off copper cover for a tool, use it and then recycle it? Shim something with it. Melt it into a hammer...

I used to have a five gallon bucket of salvage copper scrap and one of brass scrap, another of metal rods of all sizes etc. Alas, due to circumstances, I had to move 4 times in one year and all that went to recycle or a new home. I am slowly accumulating a new stash. I miss it, so many uses for that type of thing.

I do however, understand that accumulating can take over your space, if not your life. I struggle with it too.

Orion, the artist angle was what I was thinking as well. Honestly, scrapping the copper is not about the money right now, it is about the space. Those tubes are about 20’ and fairly awkward to move.

I'd probably chop up one into some smallish sections in case I ever found a use, store em up high on a pallet rack and scrap the rest.

I am at an auction right now, bought three things so far, should leave, but.........

I am currently trying to figure out where to put things I bought, there are a few more things that I will have to pick up tomorrow as they wouldn’t fit on the trailer.

I feel good that I only bought one pallet of miscellaneous stuff and the only reason I bought it was for the container, it is a fold up plastic box, they are expensive and useful, so at $60 I felt good about it. Also found some things that I will use in the bin, so that makes it even better.

The things that I bought that I really didn’t need were the brake lathes, yes, more than one, but less than three.





They both came with tons of pieces and parts, so now I need to find the manuals and see what I can do with them. Most likely only keep one, but at $70 for the pair, I am not losing any sleep over it.

I am actually hopeful that the larger unit will do bigger truck drums, that would be nice, they can get expensive and the newer ones never seem to be as good as the older ones. As far as rotors, I have turned some without any issues, the volvos I drive have a terrible tendency to rust, so this would eliminate replacing them when that occurs, I have a buddy that sold used cars and he had a brake lathe we used to turn some rotors that I would have thought were "scrap", got another year out of them for about 30 minutes worth of effort. Regardless, I have seen people using them for polishing wheels too, so I am a bit intrigued. The $70 can be recouped easily, even if I scrap the lathe and sell the accessories on eBay.

I don't know about wisely, total today was $534, would have been better not to spend the money or the time at the auction, but I haven't been to an auction for a while, it was fun.

I did buy a couple of jacks, one is to keep for the time being, the other will be sold, just not sure what one I am selling. They are long frame jacks, auction said 5 ton on both, but one looks heavier, I was hoping for it to be a 10 ton. I paid just over a hundred for both, the one I know works was $95 and the other was $10. Then I bought an I-beam rack, I am going to use that in the shop, just need to make it wider, the person that welded the current spacer/braces was not a very good welder, the actual rack uprights are fairly nice, but the pant is all that is holding the two uprights together. I will get some pictures. Also bought a couple more aluminum carts, these are destined to be torn apart and remade, but I knew that when I bought them.

A brake lathe that you can demonstrate is working and usable is worth $250+ around here. No, I don't know why either. I would recoup a $100 investment in one with in 2 years as I fight the rusty rotor issue too.

According to the specs I can find, at least based on my guess of the model number, it may be able to do 200 pound drums that are 28” diameter. Could become a useful thing for the big equipment.



The jack that I thought was larger capacity is actually only a 4 ton, go figure.

I have a small bucket of copper and brass bits with some coax, going to try a different scrap yard and see what prices they can give me.

Spent over an hour talking with my Brother last night about trucks and stuff, I think he may have sparked a plan of action for me, but I hate it, it involves me driving a ford for a while. Of course he pointed out that I borrow fords all the time from him and Dad, the only saving grace is that it would be cummins powered. More details on this as it unfolds, but looks like the cheapest option to get me started, the plan was always to upgrade the knuckleboom, so this can be my trial run truck, plus it shoudl be worth a lot more once I get it up and running. Did I mention that I will have to drive a ford around for a while?

I went and picked up the brake lathes, they had a bunch of leftover cardboard Gaylord’s so I grabbed four of them, should make the scrap process easier.

I'm curious if the medium duty truck drums are turnable. Most light duty trucks and cars aren't anymore. And don't you think that weld could hold a couple of................ounces?
