I am not too far from there. That looks like a nice truck. I would think you could make some money moving boats with that trailer.

It is something I thought about, but I really think the value is int he parts. I would prefer to make a nice tilting trailer out of it. If I get the truck, I will try and sell the trailer separate before I go and tear things apart.

I did find the almost perfect truck, like 90% or better, not sure I can afford one, but the military version of the Freightliner FLD 120, the newest version fits the bill nicely. M916A3 is what they consider it, there is one for sale in Tennessee, (auction), ends in 12 days. The good thing is that it has high miles, almost 40k, could make it worth less to the auction crowd that is used to buying them with 2000 miles. Even so, the last few that have sold end up around $40k. Here are the good things, the truck is a 6x6, detroit 60 series engine 430 HP, 7 speed automatic, air brake, air conditioning, PTO already installed. The bad things, military paint, 24 volt power systems, not air ride, rear frame is way too tall for my purposes.

I was under the impression that you needed a crane truck or something for your tower biz ?

What tasks do you need a truck to do ?

And isn’t there a truck already built for power line construction or something that is AWD and has a crane ?
Like this ?

Trying to do too many things with one truck, that is the problem.

I need to be able to load things with a crane, haul things on a trailer, yet still be maneuverable. This means knuckle boom to cut down on length and size, gooseneck trailer to keep maneuverability, and a tilting deck over trailer for getting my trinkets.

The truck would very rarely be used for actual tower work.

At this point, I am so fed up with trucks, no one that wants to sell a truck will answer any questions, simple questions, like is it a 5 speed or a 6 speed, does it have AC and does it work, what is the engine horsepower, what is the road speed of the truck. I feel all of this should be part of the sales pitch. Last truck was a 4 speed, never even seen one locked out of 5th and 6th before. Another guy tells me he can’t test the AC without driving the truck down the road, I call BS.

I keep extending my budget and keep striking out, apparently you just can’t buy a decent truck with an automatic trans for a reasonable price.

So something like this ?
You want the crane to be able to reach out far enough to load stuff on the trailer ?
How heavy is the stuff you need to lift and load ?

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to just have a local towing service use a rollback or a tow truck with a boom ?

Place I work for needs to load heavy stuff sometimes and we just call a medium or heavy duty tow company and have them load it on our trailer a few hundred dollars

The price on this one is so low I suspect it’s a scammer but is this the kind of truck you’re looking for ?

I appreciate the links, but I am looking for something that is very specific. If you go back a few posts, I have spelled things out.

Going back and forth with the seller on the Swiss Army knife truck. Think we are going to come to an agreement. Should know tonight. If I don’t get that truck, I may end up in Virginia again for another truck.

Deal is done, I am picking up the truck and trailer on Friday in Massachusetts. If I hate the truck, I will flip it and buy something else.

The upper area, Essex ish.

As for hauling boats, if I can't sell the trailer, I might try it, but I feel like there is a fairly decent learning curve and I don't think customers would be looking for a scratch and dent discount..... :lol_hitti

I need to get the truck back, and start prepping it for an inspection sticker ASAP, I have an appointment Wednesday, still trying to get it in earlier as I am supposed to be in NY picking up a trailer with it on Thursday. I figure this trailer is more up my alley than the boat moving one.

Is that the boat trailer in the picture?
If so that looks for fresh water, the ones I trip over in the marine boat yard have hydraulic stuff everwhere.

This is the boat trailer, some of the pictures seemed too have disappeared. It has four hydraulic arms, then the trailer can raise and lower independently on each side. It is definitely not as fancy as some of them I have seen, but it is still useful for sure.

First I thought it was a mislabeled 8LL, then I thought it was a 9 speed, but now I am convinced it is a 9 speed converted to a 13 speed, of course I didn't find this out until I got done with the trip. Basically it was extremely slow in direct, had I known I could have used OD and it would have been a quicker trip. I am not up on these transmissions and I didn't want to experiment too much, I was kind of afraid I would break something. I see how it is supposed to shift now, so I will have to take it for a quick ride, need to get fuel anyways.

The speedo is off, so I had no clue what my top speed was, pretty sure it was under 60, if OD works, it should be a lot closer to 70, but I still need to figure out what the rear ratio is. On the spec sheet for the glider kit, they called out 4.10 gears, could be that it is actually lower than that and that is why it is off. I was gaining about a mile for every ten I traveled, this also means the truck has less miles on it that it is reading. I don't think you would notice this at lower speeds and I think there was very minimal highway time on the truck.

Need to change the rear tires, they are all dry rotted, also need to remove the boom, it is definitely heavy, I could feel it unloading the front suspension.

Couldn’t register the new truck today, had a big dispute on excise tax, they wanted the truck MSRP to be $127k and I had paperwork for $42k as suggested retail price on Freightliner letterhead. I think I got it sorted out, but will have to wait until Monday to know for sure. That was almost as bad as the fire truck.

I tried to charge the AC, but my cheapo tool decided to not work, need to buy another one at NAPA. At least it still has pressure, so I expect it to take a charge and work.

I did play around with the boom a bit, very rugged, but very slow. Will be great for someone else. ;) it looks like he designed it to use a ram to go up and down eventually, but never did set it up.

In the morning I am picking up the crew cab truck I bought a few weeks ago, had to borrow and modify my brother’s trailer, his ramps are always in the way of the load, so I modified some turnbuckles and drilled a few holes, so now they are adjustable to about any position.

1ecdbe43a4ba681021536d84ca3fca90.jpg

The turnbuckles had to be machined a bit so I could get hitch pins into them instead of Cotter pins, figured that would make for easier removal. While I was at it, I had to drill a new hole in the solid receiver hitch, it was sticking out a ridiculous amount, now it is much better. Glad I had the Bridgeport, made short work of things.

I guess it could be worse.

I felt bad using it, but needed to get things done. I think they call that flat surface disease, everything was sitting on a plastic tray though.

When I get back from picking up the crew cab, I need to do a cleanup at the shop, things have been getting out of hand, the last three times I have been at the shop it has been frantic and I have had to leave bigger than usual messes. I can’t wait to have the frantic pace stop, looks like after this week it should be a bit more laid back.

I pinky swear I will clean up the mill.

If you saw the maze I had to go through to get to the mill, now that would have been embarrassing. I actually had to raise the forklift forks to get through without climbing over anything. :(

Made it back in one piece, crew cab is unloaded, now I will have to do some investigation into the central hydraulic unit. I am going to make that truck into a dumping flatbed for sure. I figure I will also add an auxiliary port to run tools or other hydraulic equipment. I am about to head to NAPA to get a new AC thingy, so I can try and make the new truck cold. Also need to head to my Dad's and pick up some tires, then tomorrow I really need to work on cleaning things up in the yard. I am getting bottle necked and I do not want it to get worse.

Confirmed speed on the new Freightliner, a paltry 61 MPH. Transmission is definitely a 9 speed with the 13 speed conversion. The rear end ratio is something dumb like 6 to 1, the original build sheet had said 4.10 and that gear would have been awesome, I am going to have to play around and figure out what tires I am going to use, then I can swap the rear gear out with something a bit more respectable.

Looking the truck over, since it has the extra length front frame, it is the perfect truck to convert to the 60 series engine, after Monday, I will know for sure, but it should be very inexpensive to register if I can get them to bite on the glider kit MSRP instead of the crazy price Freightliner used for the blue book value when new. Basically it would save me hundreds every year in excise tax and I am cool with that.

I will know for sure Monday, but if this works the cost should be around $600 and that is a livable number for me, otherwise it will be almost $1000 and that will ****. Remember this is not a one time fee/tax, I will be paying it every year as long as I use the truck. Sales tax is a different thing and I only pay that once.
