Strouty,

Keep a close eye on the maintenance of the pneumatic steps on that Quantum. If not maintained they can(and will) become a massive (expensive) headache. We had quite a few issues on a truck my FD had, mostly due to misunderstood maintenance intervals.

I love quantum cabs, yea they look a bit odd but they have an insane amount of room inside compared to their "traditional" siblings.

Yes, the steps were the number one issue mentioned by every forum or website out there. Seems that if you keep them lubricated they stay working. I agree the cab is amazing compared to other cabs, it was very comfortable to drive and I felt like it would work well for me overall. Luckily I got the service manuals, so I will be diving into all that stuff and figuring out the details as I go.

It would seem to me that instead of worrying about fugly lights or paint colors, how about just getting the crane mounted and functional?

I probably would not even worry about the bumper at this time.

Fix the glass, ditch the pump equipment and get the crane mounted and whatever flat bed you are going with so you can use the truck.

Once you have the functionality figured out, then start dealing with making it look decent....

The more you start messing with the cab, the more mission creep you will have and then it will be time to go get another truck because this one is taking too much time....

But I digress.....

I'm sure it is a trip to drive...

You are right, but I am still waiting on parts, I am actually taking measurements right now on the other knuckle boom. How is it that I dislike red so much, yet I am now going to have a red fire truck and a red knuckle boom? I guess they will go together well.

I ordered the PTO for the Allison automatic, they are also looking over my hydraulic pump, I guess it needs to be reversed, I am having them do that. If I can get OMO registered then I can come over and pick up the boom. I do need to get new bolts, my frame is taller than any of the other trucks.

Yea but just think what you will have and be able to once you get it all together....

Stinks about the height though :-(

What are the bolts for? The crane?

Yes, it takes 8 bolts that grab the frame almost like a ubolt except stronger since they are not bent. There are large plates that go under the frame rails. I still need to make some braces that keep the frame rails from collapsing, but those are pretty straight forward.

Strouty, thanks for answering my questions.

Yea I guess I can see where they cost of them comes from.

I must have missed it where you said you were cutting the fram on this one... I thought you were cutting the fire truck one.

That truck is not mine, i am buying the knuckle boom, it was some government grant that municipalities can use, they had to destroy the truck by cutting the frame, then they cut holes in the engine block. I guess they bolted the frame together to keep it mobile.

It’s easy to understand. In the quest to build his Perfect Truck, he’s buying all the parts he will need to put it together.

Unfortunately, each piece he needs is already attached to another truck. Sooooooo, to get the parts he needs, he MUST buy the truck that the part is attached to.

Fortunately, he’s building a truck, not an airplane or a nuclear submarine.

Jake is pretty much correct. I have an end goal, but I look at things like a puzzle, I need all the pieces and I have to spread them out before assembly. Once I get the insurance on OMO, I will have a path to follow. I think things will really start to take shape in the next month. Then it will make sense to most people. In the end I will have two trucks, one will be “light duty” the other will be “medium duty”. I can borrow my Father’s truck if I need heavy duty, but I think I will be covered for most of what I do.

I have lots of Subs....,

I think I have the crew cab truck traded for work I need done. That will make a little space.

I also stumbled on what I think are military Oshkosh transfer cases at my Dad’s shop. I need to do some investigation, but it could be exactly what I need for my all wheel drive conversion.

I think today is going to be OMO registration day, then I want to get the PTO of one truck so we can make it work with another style pump. The part numbers are not coming up I. The system, but they told me if I bring it in, they can match it.

Tampa had a lot of Subs... don't think you have the same "Kind"... *wink

Will you get much use out of a submarine doing tower work? Is it going to be a side business? If you put big windows in it, that would be nice. If you are planning to invade, lets say... Canada... get me some insulin.

We have an Oshkosh at our local police station... I park next to it when I am in the area just to get a good look at it. It is mint... It is 8 wheel drive... I think... Every nook and cranny is labeled with what is stored inside "said nook and cranny".

Soni Honegger has built some of the coolest most useful trucks on the planet. And he does it with American military iron.

I will work on a diagram for you guys.

Just gave the new 1" impact a workout, still had to heat a few of the lug nuts, they were really on there, gotta love rust. My insurance agent has been a bit slow, I really wanted to get OMO registered today, but it may not happen. I am about to pull in a truck so I can swap tires and also remove the PTO, once I have that off, I may head over to the hydraulic place and see if they can match up my pump with a new PTO adapter plate rather than buying a new PTO.

Right now I have great weather, so I am going to try and get a lot of the outside **** done. The fall auction is coming up on October 10th, so I need to get things together for that as well. Gives me about two weeks to have things ready to drop off. Hopefully I will at least have the Freightliner going with the knuckle boom, I can borrow a trailer, so that isn't as important as the truck.

Decisions also need to be made on what is going where around the shop/yard so I won't get caught off guard when it does snow. I hate thinking about it, but I need to be ready, they are saying it is going to be a really cold snowy winter up here. That reminds me, I need to schedule the house snowblower for a recall repair.

OMO is registered. :)

Cheaper than anticipated, so that is a bonus.

The rest of this week is going to be prep to get knuckle boom cranes installed.

I like diagrams.
So looking at your inspiration truck, the boom will be for loading/unloading stuff AND change out different bed types. If so that’s a cool idea.

We had trucks like that in Chicago they were called swaploaders. Had a cab and a chassie then you picked the body you needed for the job, sometimes it was a dump truck other days it was a salt spreader they had a loading hitch similar to a 20 yard dumpster loader. Buy the way your truck/parts swap is clear as a bell to me, I get it.

I think it will be obvious to everyone once I get a bit more done.

I have looked at hook lifts and think that is the way to go, but for now loading them with the knuckle boom will be fine. You can even use it to dump a bed, just need to have a pivot at the rear.

I think in the end, it will be well worth the effort.

I did remove the funky red strobe lights and cleaned up some of the lettering, I think it looks better, but I also know that the goofy bumper needs to go before I can really see what I have to work with.

I really think the grill is a big part of the issue, it needs to be different, but I have not figured out what to do yet.

It is there to hide the hinges and wiring, no good or easy way to remove it. I meant the steel part of the grill, I think remaking that may help the overall look.

She actually looks just fine without the red lights. I don’t see the issue with the grill. There is still plenty of ugly going on, but once you get that 20,000 pound winch mounted you won’t even see it.

As I modify things, I will post more pictures. I have a few things to do on top of this, also still need to be able to drive it. Friday I am going to try and get the knuckle boom from Dad’s place. It is going to be a bit goofy, boom will have to be mounted after the pump assembly. Then I have to plumb it so I can get it positioned for welding the winch on.

It is, I will only be using it for transport in the funny position. I figured having it at my shop is better than having it on a trailer at my Dad's. The plan is to setup hydraulics so I can run either of the two new booms with quick attach connectors, this way I can maneuver them for fabrication and painting purposes.

Going to try and get the PTO and pump setup on new Freightliner today, assuming I can get the adapter needed, if not, I may have to put things back together so I can use the knuckle boom on the old Ford.
