Got the stupid stainless steel half culvert sections of the back of the freightliner, makes it look a lot better. This truck will be getting a flatbed of some sort sooner rather than later, but for now I need the fifth wheel, so I will leave it as is. Still have to dig into the PTO and hydraulic pump, I got off on a tangent (imagine that?), but I know that if I remove the rest of the old brackets, the knuckle boom from the F700 should fit with minimal, if any modifications.

I need to clean up a couple spots on the frame, also have to replace a few bolts with shorter ones. I am also thinking that all the old holes will get bolts too, seems like since it is a double frame it won't hurt anything to do it that way.

I wore myself down so much last week that I developed a cold on Tuesday night, yesterday wasn't too bad, today I am fogged over and feel crappy, so today may be an intentionally shorter day. Can't afford to get really sick, I turn into a big baby and stay in bed, at least that is what my GF would tell you.

Got all the brackets off, putting the wheels and tires back on, this time using the good tires and blue painted wheels. I still need to get bolts and paint up the frame, but it is starting to look a lot better. Just wish I was moving a bit faster, the clock is beating me today.

I like that, but it is way too long for my truck names, could just call it Optimus and then slap some autobot logos on it. That would be one way to make it fun, could even match the paint scheme, not thrilled about red, but it is already (all-reddy) red.

Taking the extra brackets off OMO so I can try and get the knuckle boom tomorrow morning. The exhaust needs to be shortened too, it used to hang off the body that is no longer there, don't want it to fall off.

I still haven't gotten to the PTO, so much for an early night, guess I can rest when I am dead.

Need to temporarily mount the air tank, should have plenty of room for the knuckle boom to bolt down now. After I get the tank mounted, I have to pull the PTO off the other truck, going to make room in the shop for that job, getting dark early these days.

I can't make it any further tonight, my head is just done, all stuffed up, tired, hungry, going home. I am just going to figure that the PTO will be ready for Monday.

Ended up taking OMO to my Dad’s, then taking his pickup home, should be able to get the knuckle boom set on and temporarily bolted down tomorrow morning. Then we are supposed to go and try to spool the guy wire from crappy rotted wooden reels to newer not rotted ones. Luckily there is only a couple like that. Will be nice to have that stuff out of my yard too.

So for the most part, I follow where you're going with the red firetruck and knuckleboom project... However, I'm getting lost where you're going with the blue Freightliner truck. Will that be just a flat bed truck for pulling trailers? What were the reasons for buying that truck?
Anyway, keep posting pics, especially the knuckleboom crane stuff.

For reference, I put an IMT knuckleboom on my old 51 Int'l truck and it works great for crane work inside the shop, especially after I put on an electric motor conversion to just run the hydraulics on the crane. Saves my back a ton, and pairs well with my forklift for odd jobs in the shop.

Honestly I am not sure how things will shake out, the Freightliner was supposed to be my truck, but now that I have the fire truck registered for a reasonable price, i am not sure what I am going to do. I feel that I can justify having both, especially since both of them are in very good shape and both are very cheap to register. The fire truck is more rugged and has the big cab that I plan on converting into a sleeper cab, while doing this I will be able to use the Freightliner, once the fire truck is done, it may be that I sell the Freightliner, but it would need to be for a serious profit.

Per usual, things didn’t work out as well as I hoped, crane is sitting on truck, but we can’t fold it up completely. It has hydraulic safety locks, so we need to plumb it up to get just enough pressure to release the safety, right now it sticks out making the truck like 10 feet wide. Hopefully we will have it figured out by tomorrow, need to get some parts today.

Also it weighs a lot more than I thought, 6800 pounds as it sits, then the winch and extra parts will probably add another 500 or so pounds, all in, I would guess it will weigh 7500 pounds.

It is a transfer case, driveline gets interrupted and I didn’t want to get into that this minute.

A day with Dad.....

I am back at the shop to try and get something done, we shuffled trucks, made a mess, argued about stupid things, then I had to bring him home. All I can say is, I love my Dad.

We were trying to get the crappy spools of guy wire setup so we could put the wire onto new reels, well the crappy spools were crappier than anticipated and things didn't work, then we had to try and adapt a 5 7/8" center hole to a 3 1/8" center hole, that didn't work, everything I had was 5" diameter. I think I have it figured out, but Dad was coming up with ideas that involved pour in place plastic, or grout, or machining fence posts on a lathe. I had about enough of that conversation, seemed like it was all he could talk or think about for more than 2 hours. At least I am feeling a bit better, today was way hotter than the last few days, so I was overheating again. I will try and get some pictures of what is going on with the spools of guy wire.

The plan is to remove it when I am ready to move the axle back. OMO will be a longer term project, the Freightliner is going to be the quick built truck that is "good enough" for now. Then once OMO is done, I can start working on making the Freightliner how I want it. I hope to have OMO done by next summer. The Freightliner should be operational sometime in October, preferably sooner rather than later, it would be a huge help getting prepped for the auction, plus delivering things to the auction.

Glad you are making progress. I have all the same issues you have when it comes to projects. But you seem to get more done than I do. Keep it up!

I have a name suggestion: "OMO-god" (you have to say that real fast and with a bit of an japanese accent). Because that's what people will say when they see the truck on the road.

It will definitely get some looks, I am betting DOT will be interested as well.

I just found a company that makes air ride for single axles up to 35k pounds, so I may be able to make it air ride after all. I do not want to lose my capacity and most air ride suspension (single axle) are only good for 23k after that they go to springs. It would definitely make OMO ride nice and cushy. I am willing to bet that the suspension is on the pricey side, the target market is fire trucks.

I guess we are back to summer for a few more days, I am not a fan. Loading the guy wire spools now, trying to get to Dad's place so I can try and fold up the knuckle boom on OMO.

The knuckle boom is proving to be stubborn, we can’t get enough pressure to it to release the main boom. Looks like we will have to plumb up Dad’s truck so we can try it, unfortunately it will have to wait until Monday, fittings are going to be the problem. If it was just a matter of the boom being over width, I would drive it back, but one of the rams would be riding on some bolts and I would be afraid something major would get damaged.

I basically wasted yesterday afternoon, took away all my motivation, wish I had put the effort somewhere else.

Delivered the crew cab, went to pick up the cement truck, but the wasps had decided it was theirs. Spent an hour and a few cans of wasp spray and brake cleaner, they are still pretty pissed, but I think they will be gone soon anyways. Regardless, I decided not to move the truck today, it was getting later and traffic was going to be an issue as well as the risk that some of the stray wasps could end up in the cab with me.

Talking trucks with my buddy got me all excited about the upcoming auction, at this point, I am shipping the boat moving trailer and the C-70 crane truck. Those two things would be a huge time **** and in the end not worth the effort. Then the discussion of sending the Boston fire truck came up, that turned into why not send Buck as well, then it turned into why not take the bucket and put it on the fire truck rather than taking the engine from the fire truck and putting it into Buck. After thinking about it, this may be the best way to go, plus when I am done, I will have a decent truck to sell, rather than a ****** fire truck carcass to scrap.

i am wiling to bet they will all be dead or gone tomorrow, I am bringing more wasp spray just in case.

I was very unmotivated this afternoon, I think my cold is keeping me from sleeping well. I decided to flatten out the ruts I made a few months ago with the 5 ton 6x6 getting the moving van trailer out, then I got a little more ambitious and I took the pile of dirt that has been there for years and spread it out, made some room to put some stuff for the winter, good part is it is a high spot and I pretty much filled in the low spot, so water should not pond there anymore. My cousin just bought a large dump trailer, so I may have him haul in some gravel, then I will have it on site. I really need to dig up the sand around the shop and replace it with gravel, then I won't sink it driving a truck or the forklift around the back and sides of the shop. I guess the first step is to make room for everything that is staying here for the winter, then we can worry about replacing sand with gravel.
