So far I have found a furnace for the shop at TH, and a water pump for the house, still need the metalbestos chimney and a pressure tank for the water (going to probably buy that new). I ordered my pex tools and some supplies, I decided to go with the side crimping setup rather than the copper rings. I am very familiar with oetiker clamps and how well they work, so I figured they were involved in the standard, plus they are easier to remove, and since the clamps are stainless steel, there will be no future corrosion. I also looked into water heaters (would be electric), I am not sure I can fit the fancy one that has a huge rebate, if I can, I will buy it, if not I will put it at our real house, then take the old one (couple years old) and put it up at the Hill.

Got the furnace back and unloaded, headed for the well pump now, then might go and pick up another Burb carcass.

This furnace is much larger, it will fit, but I may have to do a few things to make it right. The previous owner cut a large opening in the side for intake air, I don’t think I can use that location, so it may have to be blocked off.

Why are you replacing a furnace that you already had?

Don't you change all the oil in your vehicles? no waste oil furnace?
er wait you went the salvage garage? The hill is kind of limbo isn't it? As far as you renting it or owning it?

How's the lump? Your eye?

Black Eyes Matter

Bump is still there, eye is still very colorful. :(

The furnace is for the Hill, the one that is there is junk and this should be a good replacement. As for waste oil, there is a waste oil furnace, it needs some tinkering, but does work.

Had to go pick up Perk this morning, need to get a trailer and then grab the Burb carcass I bought. May try and fully deal with that this weekend, then I can bring the unwanted parts back on Monday. What I really need to do is get the heat working at the shop on the Hill, that would be a good thing. Also need to start prepping for winter a bit better than I have been. Starting tomorrow we lose an hour of daylight in the evening due to the time change. :( It always feels like the beginning of the end when that happens. I am over at the SG right now assessing things, can’t pick up the Burb until 1PM, so I have a little time to kill.

Three of the batteries for the 5 ton were actually fine, well the third one is still charging, but it seems responsive, I am going to see if I can make it work with just the two for now without having to rework all the cables.

The fence guys at the tower had gotten almost all the posts in and even some of the fabric. Should be done next week, then I have to get the gate put back in so the road can be blocked off. I figure I better do that while the Mitsu is there, although a lot will be hand digging, the road has underground power on one side and telco on the other.

Got the Burb picked up, the. Decided to try and tackle the removal of the old furnace and boiler. Making a bit of a mess.

The boiler was not operational, it would shoot flames out the side, so we turned it off and decided it would be best never to fire it up again, that was ten years ago. I am messing with the new furnace now, wiring is kind of messed up, but I think I can figure it out, the fan relay is out in the open and they cut a few wires, so I don't really have much to go by. The original manual doesn't line up the same, so I may have a trial and error approach. Good news is that I think I have all the parts to make it function, might not be the final setup, but at least I can try it out.

I think the final placement will be closer to the corner, but I needed to see what it looked like lined up with the exit port.

So the assessment of the SG earlier today made it clear that I needed a conex or storage box, found a 40’ box trailer, going to meet the guy tomorrow morning and that should be the quickest and easiest way for me to get the stuff out of the SG so I can use it for the winter. Price was decent considering it is all on the road and ready to go.

Had dinner up at the house on the Hill with the GF, we had the giant tacos, then talked about the house layout and what the general plan is. She has a real hard time visualizing things, so I need to draw it out for her. Overall we are pretty much on the same page.

I am now out messing with the furnace again, I really want to try and get it to fire tonight. I also should be messing with the waste oil furnace, that shouldn’t take too long to get going.

Waiting for the guy with the trailer to let me know when he is leaving. Worked out well, we are meeting half way so it should take us about the same amount of time to get there, that is of course if he doesn't flake on me.

I am planning on dumping the trailer at the SG, then head up to the Hill to try and get some more of the furnace figured out. Would be nice to get things fully functional so I don't have to worry about them. I also need to update the thermostats, bought a couple more NESTs and would like one in the house and one in the shop at the Hill, then I can easily control and check in on the buildings to see what temps are inside.

So are the Nest thermostats really worth it? My stuff is so old, they're still analog. How hard is going to be to wire these things up?

The reason I like the Nest was ease of use and clean looks, there are probably other thermostats that will do the same thing for less money. Hook up was fairly simple and the worst case scenario is that if you furnace doesn’t supply voltage to charge the Nest, you need to run a new wire and possibly buy a small wall watt power supply. I like being able to remotely adjust the heat, it also gives me some indication if there is an issue or the power is out. I have to keep internet in order to use them, but so far this has not been an issue. If I am headed to the SG, I can turn the heat up before I get there, if I forget to turn it down, I can do it remotely from anywhere. I do have another thermostat that is my back up system, the Nest only allows you to set it down to 45 and that was too high for a storage building. My work around for this is that in the menu you can set an emergency temp, I set mine to 36, then my other non internet thermostat is set to 38. The Nest gets turned off and I have a redundancy in case one fails. If the power is out, I am screwed either way since the furnace needs juice. I should probably be using an old school non electronic thermostat as my backup one, but so far I have never had any issues, been using the Nest for probably five or so years now.

Made it back with the trailer, the only thing that wasn’t disclosed and wasn’t obvious in the pictures was that the rear doors were missing the weather seals, so I will have to address that, otherwise it was in very good shape.

Looks like the rain is going to hold off for a while, I am taking advantage of that, moving things around at the SG, might even have some room here this afternoon.

I still find it impressive that I can turn around with a ten foot long pallet on the forks without going outside.

No extensions, just leveraging off the pallet.

One thing I will say is that I didn’t think much about height, the new trailer is a bit shorter than expected, a couple of my double stacked pallets will need to be reconfigured. I could have bought a rougher 53’ that would have been about 12” taller and a few inches wider, but it would have been a full day of driving. I should be able to make this work, just didn’t think much about it before buying. :( Live and learn.

It doesn’t look like you have a free lift mast. Do you need to double stack OUTSIDE of the trailer?

BTW that van body trailer looks like new inside[emoji106]. Nice score.

Edit: never mind. I just noticed you use a pallet jack to wheel in. I’m so used to loading dock work. Sorry. Sheesh!

No loading dock here, someday maybe. Also no free lift on the forklift, someday I will get a nice one of those too.

Was trying to put boxes on top of the big box from the pallet, I should have picked it so the forks were captured, instead, it dumped off one side, then flipped the other way, lots of security tags and pins everywhere. You guys would be proud though, I used a broom to sweep them up and they went directly into the trash. ;)

Yes on the translucent roof, been patched a few times. Considering it is a 2007, it isn’t too bad, was owned by National Grid (a power company) so it wasn’t used and abused like a normal trailer would be, it has some dents, dings, cracks, but I think it was worth it to get what I got done today. Still have some of the heavy duty rollers to get out into the trailer, also have to tear down the two powered sections, then there are two gear boxes that need to go out back. It started raining, then it got dark, a combo that makes me want to stop working.

Actually, they were “free”, of course nothing is ever free. I just haven’t had a chance to get back into the selling aspect of my life. Next year should be a bit better, lots of big projects are being completed now and that should free up some time for me. I figure spring will be the beginning of a much better year, at least I sure hope so.

I would have loved to do a detailed list, but I wouldn’t have been able to get the shop cleaned out if I had tried to do that too. Once I get things squared away at the Hill, Then I can work on my selling setup. I plan on making one conex just for things to sell, then I will have my “eBay trailer” for the eBay stuff.

At this point I still have no clue if Dad is going to “replace” me in April like he originally said or if that is no longer on his radar. I am working on things like that is happening, I figure I should be ready regardless. Even if he doesn’t “replace” me, I am still planning on developing my business again, I think he will shudder the business as soon as the accountant gives the green light. The only good thing would be that I should end up with 10% of one of the towers that I helped to develop. At this point is would probably be close to $150k, I would probably use that to buy a larger crane then I could do jobs that pay with it.

This is exactly what I did. Bought a wall wart power supply similar to this one. The furnace had a switch to cut power (code requires one within I think 6 ft). I replaced that with a combination switch and outlet, ran the wire from the power supply up inside the wall to the thermostat following the thermostat control wire, and connected the power supply wires to the Nest's base plate like in this video. I'm a novice with all this, and it was easy to do.

Thanks for the input zanyad.

This morning was the first morning with my GF on her new schedule, thank you! I was able to get up and get out of the house a little after 6, her old schedule screwed me up so I couldn't get out of the house until closer to 8 unless I got up at 4 AM. So far this morning I have done some cleanup in the office, put away some of the new Tekton wrenches from the last couple weeks purchases. I also got the clocks changed, in the shop and house, even put up my new "backward" clock, I thought it would make you exercise your brain in order to read it, I promptly set it wrong and had to reset it properly. ;)

My goal today is to get the office cleaned up fairly well, then I am headed to the tower site, need to swap out trucks, Perk is not really good for just running errands and the Burb is over at the tower. I will also be able to check in on the fence guys and grab some tools from the building, need to do a general cleanup of everything there anyways. Then I am going to draw up a plan for the water system at the house on the Hill, my PEX tools should all be here this week, so I want to be ready to get things done ASAP.
