Ether has a faster combustion rate than diesel and can damage ring lands if you use it too much. It can explode before tdc and stop rotation too. As with most things in life, a little is good, too much can be damaging.

And if you have glow plugs or a grid heater, let them do their thing and then get spraying with ether.

It's a matter of using too much. When I was in the Navy, we'd use medical ether. All it took was a few drops on a rag held by the air intake. When it fired, we pulled it away. Our GM 6-71 two strokes had flame primers built into the intake plenums. They were essentially an oil burner and ignitor operated by a button next to the starter button.

I usually use silicone spray, at one point I was told it is “safer”.

Having lunch my abbreviated trip is done, well still have to drive home, but the buying part is over. Going to get my Brother’s trailer, then haul the white burb over to where it is being repaired. I want to get it moved while the roads are clear, even on the back of a ramp truck it would still get dosed good and it is supposed to snow for next couple days of and on.

I try not to use it very often, this was one of those last ditch efforts.

Funny thing was that I used it go get the tractor started to take to him. I left it idling on the trailer since he is only about 5 miles away. He asked why it was running when I got there.

I forgot to take pictures, but I got the white burb delivered to the guy doing the repairs, he said he should be getting to it this week. Will be excited to find out how bad it is or isn’t and if we can fix it, I will be even more excited to drive it.

I am hoping to get my Burb back from the shop this week. My wallet is in hiding.

Yes, rust free and 80k on the clock. I hate the color scheme, so it is going to become a daily driver. I will use it as a test for the oil undercoating, if I can keep the rust at bay, then I will be able to run one of my future rust free diesels year round.

This is a food grade oil concoction that just keeps the steel from rusting, it needs to be applied multiple times and touched up throughout the winter season, but it works well. I actually have a clear version and a tinted black version. You spray it inside the body cavities, doors, rockers, and all over the frame components. Rust is a constant battle in this area, I am hopeful that this will work. I will also be doing the same thing to the 550 to keep it rust free as long as possible.

I may have found a smaller knuckle boom that may be for the 550, going to have to do a bit of investigating on what the people want for it, then I could do away with that space wasting crane, plus I could haul a gooseneck trailer.

There was an undercoat process, I think from Texaco, that used grease. It would pick up dirt and get really nasty. Picture having to work under it.

This isn't grease, but even so, it can be cleaned up a lot easier than trying to deal with rusted and rotted parts.

This is where I bought the stuff from, more of a local company and I like that part.

https://nhoilundercoating.com

Fluid Film is another big brand that people use, but I can't stand the smell of it.

I have also used Amsoil metal protector, but it is pretty expensive.

I am going to try another product as well, it is called Krown KL73, it creeps really well, so it will get into the areas that other things might not.

Looks like the fifth wheel I bought is identical to the one on my Dad’s truck, that makes me feel good about it, because that was a heavy spec truck.

Lots of paperwork’s today, not much going on in the shops. :(

But did you get a lot of paperwork out of the way? And it's always good when you gamble (on a 5th wheel) and win, Congrats.

Got things done that needed to get done, will have to finish up stuff tomorrow.

I think I am going to try and sell the back body and crane from the 550, the knuckle boom that I want is within reach. I am going to try and figure out what I will need to do to make the boom work on the truck. May involve more hydraulic work than I would like and it may cost a pretty penny, but if I can get a decent chunk back from selling the current setup, then it would be worth it. Later this week I am going to look at the knuckle boom, and I will post some pictures of it.

I do too, but I may have an issue before I even start. The F-550 has a belt driven hydraulic pump, I am not sure if that was done because the transmission didn’t come with a PTO port or not (it was an option you had to order). The knuckle boom I am interested in will not work with any belt drive setup, it needs too much pressure and the belts won’t allow enough torque to be transferred to the pump. I will have to take a look under the truck tomorrow, fingers crossed. Even if the PTO is an option, it will add a couple grand to my costs. :(

I will say that I think I would like the truck a lot more with a knuckle boom than the regular boom, so even if it costs more to make it happen, ultimately it would probably be worth it. I especially like the 4x4 aspect of the truck.

1G, sorry to waste so much of your time. ;)

Jack Stand, it might sweep up easily, but I don’t want to have anything to do with it if I can. I hate rust more than I hate mice (I think).

I need to work on my project lists again, things seem to be getting out of control in my head, need it on paper or white board. The possibility of a knuckle boom on the 550 has really messed with my thought process.

I need to concentrate on the projects that are being bubble gummed on a weekly basis (something like that). A couple good examples are Clark has no windows or a working door, this leads to snow and rain inside the cab leading to other issues. Also Clark needs the main ram rebuilt, this won’t get any better without doing something about it. Then the forks are just too short, need to order new ones. Front tire has a slow leak, instrument cluster is still not installed, and the engine fan needs to be replaced with the electric one I bought a couple years ago. Oh and the battery box cover needs to be modified so it can be locked down for when I transport Clark.

There are tons more of these things that I need to brainstorm, then make a list of what I will do next.

Actually these are all the same projects, just in different states........

I do need to "start" finishing some (sounds funny when I type it). The good part is that this isn't an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness or anything (like the last couple times), just some clarity.

I had written some things down, but I really need a comprehensive list. Sunday I was looking at the Tru Hitch and mentally thinking about all the things that I need to do and all the things that I would like to do. My goal for this list would be to break things down by estimated time, money, if I need help, and things like that. Basically the way I have been breaking things down for my normal task lists for the office. In the end, it should help streamline the process and I might start actually getting things done.

A good example is costs, if I know what something costs and it is on my list, when I have a little extra money I can order it, rather than remembering it after I bought something I didn't really need then saying I wish I had bought this instead......

Strouty, either paper or whiteboard for projects is a great idea but I seem to prefer paper. For me it's better to write things down on paper, then cross them off when they're complete. I guess I feel that I have some sort of record or history of what I've done. Then if I ever feel like I'm not getting much done I can look back and see my progress. That can be motivational. So this works for me, as compared to wiping completed tasks off the whiteboard and then the history is gone. I keep these sheets of paper on a clipboard hanging above my workbench.

I need to do a mind dump, all the stuff floating around up there can really cause problems.

I have a couple apps that I need to see if they will work for my projects too, I think they will, then I can keep my "notepad" with me all the time.

Doing this is tough because it brings a sort of reality to the fantasy that you are living. Seems like time and money are always way underestimated when it comes to a project. I know I am really guilty of that. ;)

No new projects...................

No mental meltdowns..............

Of course the day isn't over yet. ;)

Also, I just write everything down as I think of it. Then afterwards I can prioritize things.

I'm a big fan of writing things down right when I think of them. Seems it helps get it "out of my head" and reduces the worrying about remembering it later. Once its written down, I can get back to whatever the task at hand is and continue (trying to) making progress.

I like paper lists and get great satisfaction out of crossing stuff off my list. Sometimes I will have 3 or 4 lists going simultaneously, referring to the "newest" one for day to day tasks. Periodically I will start a new list by going back and combing the old lists and making sure I haven't missed anything.

I used to keep old lists as some sort of badge of progress, now I like recycling them, part of the declutter/minimalist tear I am on. Feels great to get rid of stuff. Anything. Just get rid of it, Lol.

And as I've gotten older, I sometimes just drop items off my list, decide they are not worth doing, or I've changed my mind on them, and don't guilt out over it.

For "got to write it down right now ideas, thoughts, supplies needed" lists, I will use whatever is handy, scraps of paper, cardboard, whatever. My phone is also handy for that, but for whatever reason, I like writing stuff down on paper better.

As a recovering ( I still slip up a lot) perfectionist, I have searched for the "best" way to keep tabs on things, I have never really found one, so I use notepads and scraps of paper that are handy. Doing this drives me mad in the end, my notes don't usually make much sense later and I can't always find the paper that I used. I really need to keep a notebook and pen with me at all times, one that is easy to access and use. My end goal is to take down notes, ideas, to dos, and a general journal of the day, it also needs to be simple to review. I do use the GJ, but it seems like it gets tough to review, things really can get away from me.

Check out Rocketbook and/or their Panda Planner version. It's an erasable notebook that lets you upload to wherever you want, Google Drive, OneNote, email, etc. The Panda planner version has monthly, weekly and daily pages to help you get organized.

Does anyone remember pocket protectors?? A small notebook, pen, pencil in your shirt front pocket... problem solved! I've seen a lot of old timers use this method... Simple, easy to use. Don't over think it..... ;-)

Or you can go the route of a lot of youtuber women and use their planners.... they fancy them up with "washi" tape, stickers, etc..... my wife just bought into this planner method... it's more about making the pages look fancy and colored than it is about real planning....

For me, I like to put an action item on the "calendar" and it has a higher chance of getting done. Even my mental calendar works well. But basically carve out the time for the task and schedule it.. decline everything else that does not help you get to that item.... sounds good in theory... sometimes it even works....

The issue that I have is that things change, a lot, and usually without much notice. The only things I can truly put on a calendar are birthdays, holidays, and actual appointments, anything else is fair game. I can plan things a couple days in advance, but generally I am up against someone else's schedule, waiting for something from someone else, at the mercy of the weather, or trying to deal with an "emergency". Essentially, when I plan things out, it just turns into a rescheduling nightmare, so I have learned to go with the flow for the most part, just gets frustrating when weather is bad and things don't align well. I think breaking things down by costs, time involved, location, and relative priority should allow me to do a quick search when my schedule changes. Once I find something that fits the available criteria, then I can at least be working towards a project or goal rather than almost creating new projects or just wasting the time.

Why not get a Microsoft Surface Pro? It's super thin and boots instantly. It runs Win 10 and you can stick a 256 GB micro SD chip in it for more memory. You could carry it around in a Pelican case or a zipper case. Battery life is good and car cords are available. I love mine.
