I thought about doing hydraulic landing gear, but then if you don’t have power, it is a problem. I feel that installing new landing gear and keeping it greased will make it work no problem.

Brought the trailer to my Buddy’s shop so he could look at it and see what I am trying to get accomplished, we are going to do repairs/modifications in sections. This should keep it as usable as possible for as long as possible. First part will be the D-Rings and the panels that cover the wheels, the middle part is going to be bolt on, so I need to figure that out too. I want to try and incorporate some tie downs in the middle of the trailer for odd sized loads.

After that is done, then I can replace the airbags and upgraded the brakes to include a parking brake. From there it will be the landing gear and front transition, then the headboard and bigger front winch.

Landing gear drama continues. Basically the landing gear I have is all the way up, so there is no issue with that aspect, that being said, it means the landing gear they have in stock will be over an inch lower than the current one, I don’t think I want it any lower than it is. This makes makes me think that rebuilding the current landing gear and moving it up the 2” will be a better scenario in the end. At least we figured this out before the landing gear left the warehouse.

I have been diligent with measuring things.

Just ordered a bunch of tires for the trailers, need to order rims tomorrow, maybe I will have everything I need by next week, then assembly can start.

All my new chains I ordered the other day are arriving today, that means I have to be home for lunch and hang out until they arrive, otherwise the guy will leave them strewn about the driveway for anyone to grab. He really doesn't like taking anything inside our porch, regardless of how little or big it is, rain or shine, they sit in my driveway or if he is feeling ambitious he will leave them on the front steps making sure to completely block the front door with the larger packages.

The plan is to get all my orders done and pick up all my local parts, then tomorrow I have help for the day, so I am hopeful we can get a bunch of things done. The new forklift dubbed "Gringo", has to have the injection pump gone through and the injectors rebuilt, so I want to get that prepped so the injection pump guru can get those done, then I will have a working forklift that doesn't take an act of Congress to get started when it is cold.

I will probably end up at the SG at least once today, maybe twice due to the Fed Ex delivery, I am trying to limit my traveling back and forth, but I can't waste any more good days and Friday is supposed to be a really good day.

I just got my block heater, so at this point, drain coolant, remove radiator, remove power steering pump and probably bracket, replace crank sensor, replace block heater, bolt things back up, replace the radiator, replace the starter, and attach the oil pressure switch a bit more permanently. I am sure there are other things that I should do, but those are the only things I can remember right now.

It is damp and cold this morning, feels colder than usual, I am looking forward to warmer temps!

I am going to do some work around the Hill, then head home for the deliveries. I almost wish I had just stayed home and done paperwork, that is how cold it feels.

I feel like I am making ice cream by hand, it would be far easier to buy a half gallon, but in the end it will be better quality. Or a total mess and all melted......

I love the plan for the Gringo, prep for the injector guy, let him do his thing, then use it. Our delivery guys are pretty nice. SWMBO got a delivery of live plants the other day and the mail guy refused to leave it unattended on the porch because it was pretty cold out. I came out of the shop to see what the deal was, he said hi, explained, said goodbye, and left. Did his job well. Usually they just leave stuff on the porch.

It is hit or miss with delivery at my house, sometimes they do it the right way, but not lately.

On another note, I found a deal on a 4x4 plasma table, waiting on the seller to confirm a few things, but I think it will be something that will add to the SG and my capabilities. The funny part is that Dad has a 4x4 table at his shop and it doesn't get used at all, it was built without a water table and you really can't just build one to get it close enough to do any good. It smokes up the entire shop in minutes, he has added a hood, but it doesn't do very well, it would need a downdraft setup to make it really work. Anyways, it never gets used, Dad wants to use it, but he doesn't know how to run it, I don't really know how either, so it comes down to having the guy that built it come over to run it. I thought about trying to buy it from Dad, but I don't want the smoke issues in my shop, it seems dumb to buy a duplicate, but this way I will have the computer and software so that I can learn how to run things myself, then I have access to it anytime unlike Dad's, there is almost always stuff in the way, plus the smoke is another issue. The one I am looking at is only three years old and has a water table setup built in, the company upgraded to a 5 x 10 unit, same brand, just bigger. I am currently trying to get the seller to upgrade their plasma cutter and sell me theirs, otherwise I have to buy a new one, the used market is not very good right now.

On the subject of the plasma table.... do you have any metal vendors near you that do laser or plasma cutting? Do you have a CAD program for designing the parts?
Unless you're cutting parts all the time, it may be much faster to outsource the parts than constantly dinking with setting up and running the plasma table, and relearning it each time you use it. Plus the valuable floor space that they take up.
Additionally, if the outsource place messes up a part, they get to remake it on their dime... if you mess it up cutting it, you get to eat that cost when you make it again, and again, and again.
Having it outsourced also makes you plan ahead, and really think through the parts. I've been having a ton of parts laser cut for me for my side business, and the last thing I want to do is get a plasma table.
I haven't seen you doing much of any custom fab metal work with all the distractions of suburbans, trailers, and forklifts.
Plasma tables are like 3D printers.... they look so fun to have, but they are a huge time waster until you master the software, the setup, and the operation of them.

So I guess you'll be getting the plasma table for sure then!!!

I do need to learn the software, I need it for multiple reason, I have a 3D printer waiting for me and I plan on buying a CNC 3 axis mill at some point. As far as planning, you mean, like figuring out what I need in advance? I am not sure that is possible.......

I think of this as my prototype setup, I will have to bumble through it for sure, but trying to get a part made on a Saturday night isn't going to happen. I have a bunch of things that I could make with it right now for the Muv-All trailer, so it may be my learning experience. The form factor of this is fairly tight, so I really won't waste too much space, as for the time, I am never really that rushed, does it seem like I am pressed for time when I post???

You can "store" it up here in my shop, we can even use my hypertherm plas! 👍

Fed Ex changed my delivery date to tomorrow, I think someone didn’t want to move all the boxes. I hate it when they do that.

I think it is all about using it, if you only use it once every few months it is going to be tougher to remember how it works (I am waiting for a bad joke).

The good thing is that I want to start making parts on both the printer and the plasma table, this should get me more invested in the process. Even if I get the entire unit with the plasma cutter, I may have to wait a while to take delivery, the shop that I am buying it from can’t be without it at all. I am surprised they don’t have a backup cutter if it is that important to them.

Temps are still climbing, just about 50 now and the sun is out, I am grabbing lunch and then I will be at the SG for a while.

I wish they weren't all subscription based these days. I would pony up the money to buy a program outright, but I hate the idea that if I stop paying, I can't use it.

OK, so we confirmed landing gear sizes, tire sizes, other things sizes, I have ordered everything I need so far except the rims for the long tilt trailer, I want to do aluminum rims, but I am not sure about the hub size, so I have to pull a rim off to check that, should have that figured out tomorrow. I still have fifty (mort like 500) things to figure out, but at this point I am kind of stuck in the mud both figuratively and literally. At least feel like some progress has been made.

I did get to pick up the gearing for the track crane, it is a nice made in Japan unit, should make things way better when the full load can be swiveled, it was a real "sticking" point before.....

Hopefully I will find out the plasma table situation, then that can be crossed off the list, still need to get the Blue Burb done, that is high priority, but it seems like everything is high priority therefore nothing is high priority. :( I am trying to make an effort to really get things done that help the process along, I need to assemble one section of Lista Storage Wall (that is all I have completed), I think I will be able to put away most of the loose stuff at the Hill. Getting that done, will greatly improve workflow. I need to move the big blue toolbox over to the lift bay, been annoying having to go to the other room to get tools all the time.

There's a place on the web that I'm looking into for all of my bracket cutting, called SendCutSend. They have a minimum price (like $30), but no min volume. I've seen pics of their work and it looks first rate. Seems like a smarter way to go. I hear turn around time is pretty quick. They also do some bending, but no welding.

Hey X, here's another company that does laser cutting.

I haven't used them yet but I think that Eric at Genuine Metalworks uses them to cut his squares. Might want to check them out as well.

You guys are fighting an uphill battle, just let me spend my money on a nice plasma table, this way I can stack all kinds of my junk on it in peace.

;)

I have run into a snag with the smaller trailer, it seems that even a 2003 is too old and no one sells the stud piloted rims anymore, they are all hub piloted and I would have to swap the hubs out and buy new rims. I emailed one place that still shows them for sale, but it seems like the website hasn't been updated in a while, so I am guessing they won't have any, but they also make custom wheels, so it may be easier to just go that route. New hubs are going to be more than $500 each, the trailer is worth the money to upgrade, but I really didn't want to spend another $2k when I have to spend about $2k on rims as well, I already bought the tires, so I have to figure something out.

This snag may be a tough one, I can have custom wheels made, but no DOT rating on them. Now I feel stupid that I didn't check into this more before I ordered the dang tires. Everyone said it was easy, right up until it isn't.

Try Midwest Wheel, they seem to have almost everything.

I use TurboCAD and picked up the full featured (then) current version for $99 on a deal direct through them 12 months or so ago. SolidWorks is availabe for Makers/DIY users for $99/annum online.

I will have to give them a shout, the local guy may be able to find some too, he had everything else I needed.

I thought it was $99 a month, per year is totally worth it, it isn't like I am sending other people CAD drawings or anything. I will definitely look into it, I was leaning towards solidworks anyways.

Well, you got that fancy plasma table. Make your own wheels?
The issue is that is they aren't certified, DOT could get me for it, I don't want to push my luck.

I did get the track crane essentially back together, I have to get a couple new bolts to replace the ones that broke off, but I have the hook all on and the new bearing fit great. I even lubed things up so it doesn’t squeak. I ran out of daylight, still need to rework the cable end, but that shouldn’t be too bad to do when I come back to put the new bolts in, then it is usable and safer to use.
