I am over at the Salvage Garage now, big storm coming through, just waiting to lose power, that would ****. I am going to try and replace the glass in the sandblast cabinet, then get a few parts sandblasted. I have a billion things to do, just starting one at a time hoping that things don't escalate too quickly......

I would have to say that the sandblast cabinet is essentially sorted out, been blasting for an hour now without any issues (knock on wood), I have some parts that have some serious paint on them, it takes three times as long to clean them as anything else I have been dealing with. Of course there are a lot of them, so I figure if I am lucky I will be done in another hour or three.....

Sandblasting is one of those tasks that can be so satisfying. Stick a bunch of rusty parts and/or stuff with several coats of mismatched paint, and out comes clean, rust free parts all the same color, ready for paint. I need to do some sandblasting today, too, but outdoor stuff in the driveway.

At work, we used thin clear plastic template stock to protect the glass. We laid the glass on the plastic and scribed around it, then broke the plastic out by flexing it. I'd make several at a time and store them in a file cabinet.

I can buy a piece of plate glass for $24 (home depot), I get four pieces out of it. The glass gets pretty etched up after three or four hours use. From my past experience the films are a PITA to deal with and I wasted more than I used. Maybe if I setup an air nozzle that blows across the window when the foot pedal is depressed, it would help keep it cleaner longer, I also wondered if tempered glass would hold up better. I picked up some paint stripper to try and deal with at least some of the paint off the remaining parts first, otherwise I probably have another three hours of blasting to get the last seven parts cleaned up.

I rarely use paint stripper these days, and almost never if I'm going to blast parts and then re-use the blast media. It's nasty messy toxic stuff and these days I'll just use a wire brush, flap wheel, heat gun + razor blade, or whatever else I have available before I resort to paint stripper.

If you do end up using paint stripper before you blast, recommend you ensure all the paint that has some paint stripper in it is removed first. Otherwise, it will come off in sticky chunks and clog up your gun.

I will be aware of that, these parts are just a PITA, they have all kinds of nooks and crannies, so it isn't easy to get a wire wheel into either. Blasting definitely works, it is just time consuming, I wanted to try the paint stripper anyways, so I figure this is a good opportunity, err, excuse.

Might want to try acetone or brake cleaner first. If it comes off with either of those, it's much easier to clean up and blast afterwards.

The cheapest I have found the tempered glass is on amazon, they sell a five pack of shelves that is 77.12
Econoco Commercial Tempered Glass Shelves, 12" x 24" (Pack of 5) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TH3K54C/?tag=atomicindus08-20

they dont last any longer than any other glass.

Skat Blast Standard Sandblast Cabinet Inner Lens Protector, 3-Pk, Made in USA, 6101-03 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MU2QMEY/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I do use the glass protectors but your right, they can be a pita to use.

This paint is probably not even going to come off with paint stripper, it is old imron, some of the best paint ever made. Dad used to paint everything with it and I can vouch for the fact that it holds up well.

As far as the glass protectors, they are generally $3 or $4 each and no one makes my size, in about the same amount of time it takes me to cut the glass protector, I can cut the glass, I am also sure I can find it cheaper if I buy a larger piece too. I was looking into sapphire glass, but I think it will be a touch too expensive.

I am headed to the Salvage Garage again, I may try and swap the media out, I have some black beauty that is 30 grit, might be worth a shot. I also want to check my filter, I think it needs to be cleaned up, the cabinet was getting pretty dusty.

Need to return some things to Home Depot and I am going to grab some more glass, I figure if I have several precut pieces ready to go it would be worth the effort.

Well the filter was pretty dirty, but it did little to change the cloudiness in the cabinet after cleaning it extensively. I think I need a larger collector, not going to happen tonight, but I have one in the office trailer that will probably do the trick. The other thought would be to setup the big blast cabinet bag house filtration system, but that turns into another, even bigger project. I feel like I am just having way too much fun.

^^^^ That’s worked for me, but it depends on the paint that was used. I filter the SG through coffee filters afterwards and can get some miles on it for later. A quick wire wheel afterwards and you’re ready for primer.

Even real automotive type paint?

I blasted a couple more, I changed the media to some 30/60 garnet, cleaned the filter, adjusting a few other things, still slow going. I am bringing the parts to the Hill, the SG has no running water, so cleanup would be a chore. I will have to try the simple green.

I'm not sure of any sure-fire way to remove automotive type paint besides grinding/sanding/blasting. I've also had luck with a heat gun and a razor blade (I stripped my entire Alfa Romeo down to bare metal this way), but that only works well on level surfaces.

Some of the paint stripper I bought was a liquid, I figured I would soak the parts in it for a while, they say 15 minutes, I say no effing way. I just got home, made new smoothie, picked some clover and pea shoots, preparing for his Majesty's wake up.

Going to have to work on Chuck’s timing, tonight was 12:30 and I am just getting to bed now. Also we have to back off the smoothie, he has been drinking three bottles at a sitting, I haven’t seen any solids in the litter box since Wednesday, I am sure that isn’t good. So many of his food items have changed over the last few days, I need to start an actual journal. He is a lot of work, that is for sure, I just keep thinking we are going to turn the corner, but it just leads to another corner. :(

Strouty weaning anything, humans, calves, puppies, kitties and groundhogs :) is NEVER a pleasant experience for anyone involved. BUT you really just need to bite the bullet and go for it.

I have found that most paint strippers are made for easy-to-remove house paint. A good automotive paint will just laugh at them.

I have tried a bunch of different stuff and only Klean Strip Aircraft Remover worked well for me on automotive paint - https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p...hHYYT1SE-6jz2w3niAxoCwnUQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

It's really nasty stuff, so wear thick gloves and try not to get it on your skin. They make a liquid as well, but that didn't work as well, and I've tried it several times. Not sure why.

Greetings, I have used several gallons of aircraft striper and could feel the effects of my gloves absorption rate failing and exposing my skin to the chemicals. I worked in a very large factory that had a safety engineer that I knew very well so I asked him about gloves and the tingling I was feeling when using paint stripper. We looked up the main chemical in stripper and then went online to see which glove is best based on a glove chart. The gloves are called Silver Shield and they have a very very long absorption rate. Two items about these gloves, they can be expensive, not too bad if you shop around. The second is they are made like a gingerbread man's hands would be. I put the glove on then I put Coated Cotton Work Gloves over the top. This works very well since the silver shields are very thin. If you take your time removing them off your hands the liners will stay inside the dipped glove and from then on, it's just like putting a regular pair of gloves.

Just want you to be safe.

I am heavier, but I had issues even when I was at 3% body fat, I just have a terrible airway. They took my tonsils out and trimmed the uvula, it helped but not enough. From what I have found, the only way to fix my issue would be to rebuild my jaw. The dental implant essentially mimics this, but it puts so much strain on my teeth that they have permanently moved, I now have gaps in my molars that weren’t there before, it changed my bite too, the dentist didn’t like what was happening, so I stopped using it.
You sound just like my old boss. He had his jaw broken and reconstructed and wired shut for 6 weeks. Looked like a different man when done.

I've made stripper before using a few household chemicals and lye. Works decent and CHEAP.

I am going to skip the stripper, I returned it this morning, seems the new stuff doesn't work worth a hoot without the Methylene Chloride?

Today was semi successful with the Chuckster, we started out this morning with only two bottles of smoothie, then he ate greens and dry food off and on most of the day, I held out and didn’t feed him a smoothie until 5, then he went to bed, hopefully tonight will be closer to 10:30 that he gets up for food, then maybe 5:30 in the morning for his next round. I have to help my Buddy again, we are going to move dirt and clay with the army dump, I guess he is making a pond.

I have been up at the Hill playing with equipment, had to move the roller up from the Quonset hut level, then brought Perk down to the third tier so I could get some fence posts out of the woods, then had to grab Clark to get them up to the top of the Hill. I am currently trying to beat the dark, moving the last (I doubt it) of the fluorescent lights so I can dismantle them in the shop, more light, less bugs. ;)

After I unload the lights, I have to run to Home Depot to get some paint for the battery box that we rebuilt a few weeks ago, it needs to be yellow to match the skidder, rather than half primer and half yellow.

Chuck has been up foraging around the cage, hopefully he won’t go crazy and when I get home I can feed him again, then he should be good for the night, although with the slow attempt to ween him, who knows what will happen.

Just got Chuck settled in for the night, refreshed his greens and only gave him two smoothie bottles. He still isn’t happy, but it has to be done.

I did get some paint, made a runny mess, didn’t take any pictures so I could hide it. All loaded up and ready for tomorrow.

Chuck was up at about 5, he foraged around for a while, then I fed him 2 smoothies, he was really mad when I put him back in the cage without another bottle. He ate some clover through the cage door and then I put a handful of fresh stuff in the top and bottom areas, he ate that for a little bit, now he is settling down for a little more rest. Yesterday I gave him a new bed, he doesn’t really know how to use it yet, but he was playing with it for a while. He would flip it upside down, then drag it around and attack it from underneath.

Is that 3-20 AC? When I put the new cab on the GF, that's one of the first mod it gets, a VIntage Air system.
