I have lurked here a bit. I recently became addicted to big old tools.

I like old things. Things that were ment to be fixed and serviced not tossed away for new.

It all started when I wanted a band saw. My father bought me a new one for Christmas 2 years ago. I opened it up and tried to use it and it quickly blew the internal breaker twice. After the 2nd time I boxed it up and returned it. Dad said sorry but you can not buy good Ameican power tools reasonably anymore.

He told me to look out for something old and we can restore it.

Talking to an Uncle he said there was an old Craftsman Band Saw at his Farm. The next day I picked it up. After some new parts from Sears and a paintjob/ powder coat job it was ready to go.

Then I decieded I wanted a drill press. Looked on Ebay and found a Strands gear head about 1.5 hours away with no bids. It came out of high school shop. I got it for a song and was to pick it up.
It was a bit rough but a few hours worth of cleaning and a VDF and it was back in service.

Last year I bought a 105 year old Lathe. Then I took the task of restoring it.
Its a circa 1906 American Tool Works Tool Room Lathe

That took awile but it came out great.

Wanting to learn how to use it I took a class at the local Navy Base.
We started learning the mill so I ended up getting one of those.
A local guy I knew had it. Its a Mid 60's Van Norman.

I have lots of differnet stuff in my garage.
I was a mechanic through college and every time the shop I used to work at gets something new they give me thier old stuff. Thats how I got a hydrolic press, parts washer and rotary lift.

Nice set up. There's lots of life left in vintage American machine tools.

I like the Craftsman 'Block' style grinder; I've never seen the stand it is on. What can you tell us about the grinder and stand?

I am also a fan of British rolling iron - great Bug Eye, who's black Bug Eye in the background?

Kids always seem to inturrupt our plans don't they? Those old machines are really cool, I bet that lathe just smells of years of old cutting oil, very cool.

The block style grinder is from the 60's in like new condition. Picked it up on Craigslist. It has every option including a tool post grinder. 1/2 hp ball bearing 3600 rpm. Craftsman Commercial.

The Jetta is a 2 door crazy show car. Not mine but a good friends I am working on.
