HI, I thought I would make this my first post. I also thought this would be a great place to make a thread with all the progress on my garage over the next few months.

So it kind of went like this: Sold my (most awesome) wifes house (though we were not married at the time) bought some land, built the garage, now selling my house to build the new house.

My wife truley is the most awesome wife. The garage was originally planned as a 60X40 steel building with 2 over head doors and 1 walk door. As time went on, so did the designing stage.

My father was going to move with us and live in his travel trailer that would be parked in the garage. This would allow him to travel when he wanted and always have a "home" to return to. So the garage grew more.

It ended at 100X40 with 4 overhead doors (2 16X12, 1 16X8, and 1 12X12), 2 walk doors, 2 windows and a full bath to include a sink, toilet, urinal, and shower. Oh, and a 24X40 impound lot fenced off the north end.

My father got married and moved to GA. So I gained that space back.

I am installing a lift where my Talon is sitting. The front half of the bay with the 16X8 door will be a walled off 2 car garage with storage over the top. The end bay with the 12X12 door will be walled off from the garage and will be my entertainment area (pool table, home movie theatre, etc..) The 12X12 was going to be for the travel trailer.

The concrete slab is 92 yards of concrete. They started at 3 in the morning and did not finish until 7 that night. There is a lot of pictures here:

My wife, father, and I built this with the exception of subbing out the concrete work. (I think it would have been a little less level had I done it. LOL!) We did it over the course of 2 and a half months. It was really a great project and I would do another in an instant (for myself anyway.) I know the next one would be easier too as I learned a few things along the way.

Well, I hope you enjoy the photos and I will make sure to keep this thread updated as I go. We are aiming to start the house very soon, then the garage interior will be finished. I have big, big plans for the inside.

Since your father-in-law has moved on I would hate to see any of his intended space go wasted so I'm voulenteering to move south to help you in your dealing with the situation. Thanks in advance for the offer. LOL

LOL! It was my father and unfortunately (for you) I have already allocated that space for the pool table and home theatre.

But I will keep you in mind if I need a tenant.

I will be interested to see how you do the interior since I have a very similar structure (80x50) that I want to finish off 1500 sq ft into a mother-in-law/boys club. I love the size of your skylights and I am envious of the insulation!

OK, here is the current (not set in stone as it is still under metal negotiations) floor plan for the garage.

The bathroom was designed when my father's apartment was going to be in there or I would have made it smaller. The plumbing is already there so it stays as is. It has a sink, a toilet, a urinal (always wanted one) and a shower.

The area right out of the bathroom door will have a deep sink and a drinking fountain.

The entertainment area will have 12' high suspended ceilings to allow enough room for the A/C ducts and such above.

The 2 car parking and the woodworking room (I will get there in a second) will have 8 foot ceilings. This is to allow me to have storage as a second floor above it. (As well as over the bathroom.)

The 2 car parking was designed the way it is to keep all the dust out of there. I have a 1992 Chevy pickup that is being built for show. I want it to stay dust free. I also want to park my Talon in there as the garage on the house will be where I park my daily driver truck.

The woodshop room was originally intended to be a woodshop. My father likes to do wood working (as do I sometimes) but now that he is not going to be living with us, I am not sure if I want a room just for woodworking. I will figure this one out in the furture. It does need to be a seperate room to hold up the trusses for the second floor.

The rest of the space is pure work space. After looking at Scott's (Mxtras) cabinets I made a few small design changes to suite my needs and I want to build enough to cover the smurf blue area. The brown area will be just regular open based work benched with thick wooden or stainless tops. I will store motors and transmissions underneath them. (I was going to go with pallet shelving for motor/trans storage but I was talked out of it by someone not happy with theirs.)

The red off to the side is the welding area. It will be setup with a welding table, chop saw, etc.. I am also looking at buying a CNC plasma table so it will go in the back corner over there.

Then the green. It will be a cubby storage area like they have at M5 Industries on Myth Busters. That way I can store all my misc stuff and know where it is. (I have since decided to move this to the upstairs storage area, but have not updated the drawning.)

The rest of the space will have my fire cabinet, fastener cabinet, etc..

I am also looking for a full sized Mountain Dew vending machine to put in there.

I am open to suggestions from everyone. If you think something will not work well, let me know. This is only my second real garage. The one I am in now is 24X30 and in the 3 years I have lived here, I have never had it setup correctly.

Oh, and those are not sky lights, it is missing roof. LOL! I was not finished when that photo was taken.

Set it up for paintball, indoor roller hockey, rent it, etc. Unless of course you have enough cars/stuff to fill it. I sure as hell don't, my house and cars could fit in there and there would still be room left.

I would not ever build myself a big garage and then rent it to someone else. LOL!

I have a 22X26 now and it is STUFFED full. So this will be a nice change. I like that I can pull in forward, hang a U turn and drive out.

Well, here we are 6 years later. The house is done and we are moved in. Now comes the time to finish the garage.

I am glad I took the time to post what I did 6 years ago as much of the design has changed. It is fun to see what I had planned. I will post pictures of my floor plan soon. Hope to actually start rolling again by January.

OK, so here is my proposed floor plan. It has changed many times since the beginning and at least 5 or so times since I started to actually lay it out about 2 months ago.

The bathroom, utility area, MIL apartment and Storage area on the South end of the building are already framed up. The bathroom itself is about 90% done. Just have to finish the shower and trim it all out. The sink, toilet, and urinal are all in and functional. The utility area will have a deep sink and drinking fountain. The MIL apartment will be a studio style apartment with a small kitchenette, closet, etc.. The area designated for storage (13.5X18) will be for the lawn mower and other **** until I build a shed. Then I will just keep misc and things like the golf cart in there. This area will also have some form of a material lift to get things upstairs for me.

The separate car parking area (26X21) which is designed 26ft deep is for parking my F450 and one other smaller car. The truck will not fit in the garage on the house, so this is where it will live.

The wood shop (12X21) will be setup for exactly that. Wood working. My only big plans for this room is a dust collector. (Possible heat and air)

The Clean Room (19.5X18.5) is the place where I will do small projects (ie RC cars, electronics, etc.) as well as engine assembly. The outside wall will have a bench from end to end built out of HF tool cabinets (think Steevo without the frame work) with wall cabinets over the top. The opposite wall will have an open work bench that I can sit at. The door under the stairs will give me access to the storage closet for things like the shop vac. The doors to the wood shop will be exterior grade sealed french doors to stop the saw dust from moving to the clean area. The doors to the remainder of the shop will be opposing pocket doors giving me a 6ft opening. The doors will have a sweep on the bottom, however will not be sealed. I do not want a threshold in this doorway as I want to roll my toolbox and engine stands in and out of this room. This room will also likely have heat and air.

The metal and fab shop (15X18.5) will be for metal related projects. Welding, grinding, (eventually) machining will all take place here. The walls of this room are going to be covered in corrugated roofing. No exposed wood in this room. (I almost had a nasty garage fire once from sparks.) I plan to have a welding table on the exterior wall with vent hood over it. This will be for smaller projects. Then a larger (4X10 maybe) welding table in the center of the room.

Main Work Bay (20X40) will be where most of the work will take place. The lift will be mounted 12 ft to center back from a 4ft deep 8ft tall pallet rack. The rack will be 16ft wide (2 8ft sections. Can't go wider due to the legs on the bridge crane.) Under one section will be where I store my tool box and the other will be a bench. The crane will be a 2ton overhead top running bridge. It will be 18ft from centerline to centerline of the runners and it will run the full 40ft length. I plan to use it to not only unload the truck/trailer, but also to lift engines out of cars and bodies off of cars. Plus it will allow me to store engines and transmissions on top of the pallet rack.

The open project and parking area (20X40) will be for longer term storage of cars that are waiting for me to get around to them. LOL! The far end of that bay will have a 3ft deep 10ft tall pallet rack 18ft long. Under the rack to the corner will be where my air compressor will be housed. Next to it might be where I put the dust collector. I am also considering a 4 post lift in this bay for maintenance work as well as additional car storage.

General notes:

• I want to eventually add a tire changer and balancer. I am thinking of putting them between the 2 16X12 doors in a line coming into the bay.
• The ceilings of all the rooms showing the floor joists will be made up of just the floor joists. It will technically be an open ceiling but each room will be sealed from the others.
• All of those rooms will have storage above it. Approx 1600sqft total. I am huge into Christmas lights and this will be mostly storage for that.
• The sub-panel will be easy enough to access to feed more electric should I not put something where I need it or add equipment I did not know I needed.

Nice Glenn, was wondering how this was going.
Might have to take a road trip to let you see how the Laser came out, I will be posting my build once I get started.....
I did acquire some property, it is going to be some before I get started due to how I really dislike owing people money, so I will do it the way you did.
How did the house finish out??
I was looking really good two years ago....
