Oh wow I've never noticed this thread. Here's a 1940's Eskimo Fan I just finished. I picked it up for $10 at a yard sale.

The bright work looks great, but that orange color is awful, what's up with that?
It's pretty clear from your before photos that it was originally textured black,
why didn't you paint it back to the correct color?
Yeah, yeah I know it's your fan and you can do what ever you want to it.
I just don't see any reason to ruin it.

Just my .02 worth.

I have to disagree and think it looks nice. Like a bright orange hot rod.

Nice work!

No kidding. It never ceases to amaze me how people can just cut down on someones quality work on this site because it doesn't conform to how they would have done it.

JustinL, nice job on bringing it back to life. The fan turned out fantastic!

I attached a pic of the fan, the guy says he'll take $30 for it. It's pretty rusted, he states it's about 6' tall & weighs around 50 pounds. Everyone think it's worth it or should I hold off til I find another?

I'd buy it for $30...........

You'll spend 30 on a plastic piece of **** that doesn't put out any air.

I bought a Mathes Cooler for the garage. Paid $25 for it but it puts out some air 4 speeds.

I would buy it. Do you know if it runs? If it doesn't run its probably an easy wiring fix. Just make sure the blade can be spun freely.

So this year I told my wife I wanted a fan for my Garage for Father's Day. Then I saw this thread and had to have one. My wife told me to just find one and buy one. So I found this one in pretty much perfect original condition on eBay!
Emerson Electric Model 79646-SA. 12" blades, 3 speeds, and oscillates. It was $68 or so shipped. I think I will eventually replace the cords on it but it runs so nice and it's so quiet as well.

The bearings are starting to go in my fan. Does anyone make replacements?

Days like today make me glad I started following this forum. I brought the attached emerson electric fan home tonight mostly because of the way people talked about them on here. Just so happens I saw one on Craigslist, guy was asking $30, I get there & he'll take $25. I brought it home, my garage is 30x40, I can stand on the other side of the shop & feel a STRONG breeze from it, it's awesome. 6' tall but can be telescoped to approximately 10' high, blades are 24" diameter, cast iron base, thing weighs at least 50#. Now just to decide how to clean it up & make her look great?!

My recollection of those pedestal fans is the motor was a sea green/silver hammer and the base was a very dark brown, almost black wrinkle paint. The cage was probabaly zinc or nickle plated and the tubes were nickle or chrome.

3 fans in my shop. 2 wall mount ones mounted on both sides of my staircase. The US Navy Emerson points towards my workbench and the GE to the garage portion. Then there's the Westinghouse pedestal.

I found this one a few weeks back. It is a Western Auto Wizard. I plan on repainting and restoring. It works great as is. The man I got it from is moving to Florida. We went to his house to look at a vintage Gulfpride oil can rack. Just about anything in his shop was for sale. It cost a whopping $10 and blows like a tornado.
Hello there, I have a few of these box fans , mines a slightly different model , do you still have this fan?

I'm surprised I haven't posted on this thread already. I love vintage fans and have several around the house.
I picked up this Signal fan at a yard sales for $3.00 because it was stuck with gummed up grease.

Signal Fan (1).jpeg

I took it apart, gave it a good cleaning inside and out, replaced the wiring and put new felt on the bottom. I bought a fan "restore" kit from Vintage Wiring Supplies that had the twisted wire, grommets, felt and oil. It wasn't the cheapest approach but it was one stop shopping. On low speed this fan moves a nice amount of air around the Living room where it currently resides.

I have a vintage Commandair fan in the garage that I picked up at the curb many years ago. It runs fine but could use a teardown, a paint job, a rewire and a blade balancing. It's sitting on that foam floor tile to keep it from walking around from the vibration . . .

Cheers

Jim

I like the looks of vintage fans, but I wanted lots of air moving our AZ garage. I installed a 30" Air King ceiling mount in one corner. It is not a traditional ceiling fan, it hangs down from a pole mount and the fan blows horizontally. On the high speed, it move 8780 cfm.

Does anyone have any suggestions on an oil for the smaller fans?

I like the Super Lube Synthetic oils but they have several viscosities from 5W to 30W. I didn't know if 30W would be too thick.

My son has a very similar fan in his room, has since he was 8. Just have to teach the kids to keep their fingers out. Those are GREAT fans.
A Hot Dog or Carrot makes a good Training Aid.
An old “Sea Story” was about using the Radar to cook Hot Dogs, the purpose was to inform the Crew about the danger from Radiation Hazards, everybody kept their distance from the antenna after the demonstration.

Don't jam a carrot in there, you will surely bend the blade! A hot dog would be O.K., but might encourage him to start sticking stuff in there just for fun! I have got my fingers in them a few times(just last week actually). Sure it hurts and can break the skin, it will not come close to chopping off a finger, or even breaking it.
