I love old stuff, but when it comes to work and efficiency I don't hesitate to go modern. In fact, as I write this, I'm sitting in a legendary .com era Herman Miller Aeron...

Nice looking stools. I wish I'd known about these before I paid almost $400 a piece for a couple of new (and not nearly as sturdy) stools for my bar table.

They are truly beautiful stools. Been working in industrial setting for 25 years I wish I had taken some more of the stuff I've seen. Did get a padded stool from one company after they threw all the 4 leg stools away. Someone had fallen over backwards at a management meeting. So they had to make all stools idiot proof. They should have just keep the idiots out of management.

Idiots belong in management. You can't promote the people who actually get stuff done!!

They made these with castors... You see them about as often as you see the chairs I have.

Those were built to last and be passed on through generations . Kool industrial style . I have a wooden draftsman stool with a iron screw under the seat to adjust the height . Now you need to gather up some brass blade fans .

I've also got an old draftsman's stool that looks similar but is covered in black pleather. Any chance you could either describe or provide a closeup of the feet that are on those stools? Mine has the splayed legs like that but no 'feet' per se, just bare metal with holes. I don't dare use it on anything but bare concrete or flooring that I don't mind getting badly gouged.

My wife keeps harping on me to get rid of it; I think I'll show her that eBay auction!

Those are really nice.

Restoration Hardware currently has these reproductions for sale, but they not cheap. http://www.restorationhardware.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod1617066

As is dittle's experience I too have been around industrial stuff for years and saw lots of stuff get tossed or sold for pennies on the dollar without thinking much of it at the time. I just figured that stuff would always be around and available.

Hey Everyone. First post here. I love the industrial look of those Toledo stools. I recently snagged a pretty cool stool at a garage sale. Anyone use on of these or seen one before? I tried to find a little more info about it but had no luck.

Josh

Very nice, Ryan. Looking into the backgrounds of the photos, your shop is becoming museum quality.

Thanks for posting - those are exactly what I sat my **** on during my 7th grade mechanical drawing/drafting class.

Imagine that, as late as 1988, my HS was still teaching this. It was a great class - did hand sketching and then mechanical drawing on Draftsmans tables. Learned to print in ALL CAPS as well. Used the heavy duty light green paper with really nice mechanical pencils.

Wonder if those are still around? Hmm...

Well this thread is going to cost me a few hundred. My cheap Craftsman stool is broke and I was looking for a new one. I guess now I'm looking for an old one. I'd probably have to search Craigslist for a year to find one, I guess I'll be hitting up ebay.

Here's my collection -

A Toledo Stool (short version) that we use in the kitchen. Someone covered it in cheap blue paint sometime in the past, but it gives it character.

A tractor seat stool made by my MIL's Dad many years ago...it's perfect for doing brake/front end work. Not sure what tractor it's off of.

IMG00160-20110624-1600.jpg

Another tractor seat stool made by the same gentleman years ago...this one is my favorite, the patina is perfect and the spring base and back rest makes it comfortable to sit in. Don't know what tractor this one came from either.

I bought this one recently at a local trade days (Canton) for $25. It was manufactured by Cramer Industries out of Kansas City, KS in the mid-late 60's (time frame is a guess, I can't find a manufacture date anywhere on it). The base is cast iron and the foot rest is height adjustable along with the seat. This thing weighs 40lbs at least and will last a lifetime.

Here is one I bought out of a Army surplus place here in town many years ago.

I have a neighbor who has a tall version of Boyds. I have asked to purchase it many times over the years but no luck as of yet.

Here's my favorite stool out in the garage. An old government surplus stool from a garage sale and an even older tractor seat from another garage sale. Paint from TSC, of course.

Mine is a Camaro clutch and flywheel. Clutch pressure plate with castors on it at the bottom, pole mounted up to the flywheel where you sit.

I was at the GEARS show today and found that Gary Martin was casting a new swing out stool. It is not on his web site yet , http://www.martinmodel.com/index.html , but a picture of it is attached. The stool is a casting kit that needs drilled and tapped and such to finish and mounted to a post or bench leg to swing out for use or in and out of the way. The finished seat is in black and attached to a frame for display only.

no neat sig line
