Glad to see another GJer from my area. I live by Hillsdale lake just south of Gardner, KS.

I have always wanted a blacksmith setup. I have some experience (very limited) blacksmithing from an earlier age. Good luck with your build.

I don't know much about blacksmithing but seems like a big coal furnace in a smaller wood framed metal sheated building would be really hot!

I've got no idea on the climate where you are, but given the expected heat (as noted by signcrafter) I'd think some windows around the top of the walls that you can open up for cross-ventilation would be a good way to keep your shop cool.
Looking forward to seeing how you fill out the shop though.

Looking good man! That's pretty sweet having a little shed for blacksmithing. I hope I get to learn that art one day...

As far as the heat goes, my forge is a spring/fall tool. Did not know they had a Blacksmith club in Adrian. Your shop is looking good so far.

I love that old "B", it's what I learned to operate with as a kid. That one looks to be in good shape.

The shop looks great and should serve you well. I am in the middle of trying to locate some smithing gear. I've never tried it, but have always wanted to. I guess it's never too late.

I always try to hit the Adrian tractor show, that and the fall Missouri River Valley in Boonville. Your old Deere looks pretty nice.Need a little giant trip hammer to run off the flat belt drive of your B.

Tin sheds rock, my forge will be in one soon.

This is going to be my forge, when we first came to view the house this was an upstanding tin barn twice this size, by the time the sale had gone through half had collapsed in a storm and the other half was pretty bad so we decided to save the better half reusing the existing tin and just replacing the rotten and missing timbers. Just got to make a door and I can move my gear in. Eventually it'll get rebuilt from scratch full size and I'll have half as the forge and the other half as storage for mowers etc.

Still need to make a hood and chimney for my coal forge, its a bottom draught forge made from a kit with an electric blower with speed control. Anvil is an old double bick pattern I picked up at an auction although I'd like a better one fairly soon.

What's the huge spike for???

I'm working on building a outdoor forge/Smelter, I have a chunk of Solid forged steel 2ftx 2"x 6" that I'm going to use as an anvil( it must weight 150lbs!). Needed an excuse for some Big hammers. :D
. All I need is to find a old vaccume for a blower, I've got a huge pile of old firebricks and found a few bags or mortar. Just need to get to work. Going to run it on wood/charcoal.

The huge spike is called a Cone Mandrel and its for making sure any loops of metal you bend are properly round.

I'll fight my way to my gear and take some pictures, the forge itself uses a big plug of high grade stainless steel as a tue iron at the bottom, the rest is mild steel, welding the two together was interesting and needed some special rods for my arc (stick) welder. I need to make a hood and chimney before I can use it and wire up the speed controller for the fan. I also have a couple of leg vises and assorted hammers, tongs and other tools.

Great start so far! I feel like blacksmithing is becoming a lost art, so it is great seeing those keeping it alive. Kudos to you and your shop!

Pug}{maN the shop looks great and those doors are flat out beautiful !
The info on the gravel screenings is timely for me. Was thinking of putting down straight limestone gravel in the dirt floor shack I'm trying to work with at this time.
Great stuff and please keep the posts coming!

such a cool shed. perfect for blacksmith. tin wont burn.

you got it, and it does not need to be air tight, in fact its bad if it is.. i might do wood slats along the back wall for i can hang some of my work and to look cool...

o and them window's are over 100 years old..:willy_nil

Not being in to black smithing I almost skipped this thread but I am glad I didnt. That is a great shed and I have the identical stove I am putting into my own shop. Keep the ideas and pics coming!
