I like the small drawers and the overall vintage look. Wish they made something like that today.

Page 332 on garage sale finds.

Yea, I first saw it there when the owner posted his auction pick up. He never did reveal what he paid. My gut says that he likely walked off with this setup for a few hundred bucks.

Even so, if you want one and have the funds, this is an outstanding example.

TH: does it really matter what he or anybody pay for something? could be he paid a couple hundred or maybe he inherited it, but happy to hear he's trying to sell it so somebody that has the cash can buy it. those just don't come up everyday anymore and i can't recall the day when they did.

of course i'd say he's a bit optimistic on his pricing for the condition, but it's not a common box. if he prepped it perfectly and painted it with Extreme Green and shined it up i bet he'd get more than his asking price. you are talking a lot of labor and paint though to get that done.

It doesn't matter what someone paid. The not so clear point is that when something rare like that box comes up at auction, and the winner of said auction almost self *****, I cannot help but to do the math.

I find that whole "****" thing to be stupid and somewhat offensive. I never ask or reveal what I pay for things.

Is this the original Snap On box? What makes it so desirable?

That stack is bought by collectors for bragging rights; it's seldom bought as a working box. Seen in person, by today's standards, it's positively tiny. One GJ member got caught up in the frenzy, drove an hour-and-a-half each way ready to dicker on one. After examining it, he said, "My wife's jewelry box is bigger than that."

I've never come across one in person. I love the look of the box for sure but the price people are paying for them has me scratching my head. It seems that our hobby is starting to see a bit of Barrett-Jackson disease. That makes me sad.

As for pricing, the garage sale thread is built on, "Look what I paid for X at a sale today..." I like to know what people are paying for things because I'm interested in real market results, not the inflated fantasy world of Ebay. It also helps me understand how much I'm going to be set back once I see something that I like. lol :)

I'm with those who indicated that it's more of a novelty. I have a Snap-on stack from the 1950s and while it looks cool, it's nowhere near as usable as modern Snap-on toolbox offerings. I actually tried to sell it once and didn't get any local offers for more than $100. I figured I'd just keep it, if that's all it was worth.

All that said, the set pictured in the original post above does represent one of the coolest looking Snap-on sets from the past.

Like the 1931 Ford Model A Deluxe coupe is one of the coolest looking cars ever built. To drive one today, not so much fun and not so much room inside.

I have to confess, if I owned it, I would certainly use it. Everyday.

I use all of the vintage stacks that I have. That's one of the rules of dragging stuff home that takes up valuable real estate. It must have a purpose/use.

Jack is right on point. I have attached a picture of mine. The bottom box (K200) has really no redeeming qualities. The top box (k60) is IMO just beautiful but not practical.

"practical" is in the eye of the beholder.. Is driving a 40 year old car practical?? Depends on the respondent of that question..
That box is awesome--and in the right environment deserves it's own spotlight!! :)

i got the k 260 for 800 bucks on craigslist last year for my dad.... everything on it works flawlessly. snap on was really ahead of the game. probably 20 years ahead of other tool box manufactures from the late 30s. i love and collect plomb, but man, compare this box to what plomb offered in the late 30s and its night and day

Did Snap-on make those or were they done by someone else?

What years were they offered?

That's a great find. That paint will clean up beautifully if you're careful.

Since the time of this thread, I also came across a K260 stack. It's used in my garage regularly and as already observed by most here, it's not practical compared to modern standards. That said, it's a lot of fun to use when working on my own projects.
