Well, my wife and I closed on our house Monday. I call it my Stubbed Toe garage for two reasons: 1. It's small (But bigger than nothing) and 2. Naming a garage on here is just a flat out rule (I think). The name hopefully won't cause stubbed toes...but you never know. It is a simple two car. Step one is paint, and that should happen here in a week or two. I figured painting it would add character and distract from my lack of tools, equipment, and projects. Also, it is easier to do now when nothing is in it. As I get things done, then I can update...but I think my wife's 'Honey Do' list is pretty long at the moment. She still lets me work in the garage though...so she's a keeper!!

Right side: Yes, those shutters are screwed in over true windows! I might have to open them up sooner or later.

Left side: gonna be hard to fit a beer fridge in...

Future plans...more light and a workbench! At least the previous owner left the pegboard!

Congrats on the new house! Garage looks like a nice clean slate to start with. what's the mini door in the second picture? does it house the hot water heater or something?

Always exciting to have a new project! Unfortunately, it looks like a standard contractor garage wiring system - I see one outlet - like that'll be enough. Looks like the first task is to rip out some drywall to run some more wires?

Thanks! We came from 5 ac., and man do I miss it. I didn't want to go to a neighborhood, but couldn't justify what people were asking for open land around here. The small door is a closet, nothing special. Someone with common sense would put the water heater there, but somehow, ours is located in the attic!:wtf:

Heck yea, Everybody has to start with something!

What 'cha gonna do first???
Simple, something and anything! I think I am going to paint it before I fill it. So after about four different paint 'testers,' I found on today to use. Off to Lowes we go!!

I am going to run wires for new lights first. Luckily, there are 4 outlets. I don't do any major work or have any cool projects... yet...so the plugs that are there will work for now. The darkness on the other hand, is too much to bear. After paint, I am going to install two fluorescent light fixtures.

Great space to work with. 20 x 20 is like an airplane hanger compared to my first workshop 10 x 8 which also housed the washer/dryer and water heater.

Paint and some bright lights will get you motivated I am sure.

Best of luck to you and keep us posted...

Thanks! Just as an FYI, here is what my old shop used to look like. I can't complain much, at least I have smooth concrete floors instead of gravel!! :rocker:

Have you made any progress yet, or still concentrating on the house?

Mine is a similar size and I love it. Other than being able to store more cars, and possibly have a lift, I am happy with the size, and find smaller spaces more comfortable to work in.

A two-car seemed huge to me after working in alleys and outdoors under a canopy.

That garage looks better than most. And if you start out by using it as a work area for projects for the rest of the house, it's less likely to become an overflow storage area for the rest of the house.

At the moment...it is filled with everything.... :(

Too late ...had to be out of the storage unit...sooo......you know what happened. I did buy some pegs and got most of my tools hung on the pegboard. Its a start. I also ended up painting about four different test paints, till I found what I wanted. I will get a picture up tonight!

Don't feel bad. We've all been there at one time or another. I wasn't able to park a car in my garage for the first four years we were in our house.

20 X 20 is where I built many racecars, roll cages, engines, everything.

You use what you have and now you look at Jacks place and figure how to set yours up better

That closet is about perfect for a compressor wouldn't you say :bounce:

Well, as promised, this is what it looks like now. I also include the four paint colors. Any suggestions? I like the top left, not too dark, not too girlie. Any suggestions are appeciated!!!

The "new to me" toolbox! It even came pre-decorated with the stickers. My old toolbox is on the right. Yeah, the little thing over there. I was thinking of trying to paint my old box, once I figure out how to get the drawers and sliders off.

I like the "What shall I do next?-chair" and the windows. It's a nice garage you have there. With the new toolbox and the old one, you'll have plenty of space left.

Just take the top left colour. ;) keep us posted

Thanks for the post. A blank canvas is a great place to start. A workbench is a nice start, that way you have an excuse to find a place for the stuff that clutters the bench. As soon as you have a bench it will fill up, trust me. The more cluttered the more likely the little woman will okay more storage.

So, as the New Year starts, my wife and I painted our garage! I also used up my Christmas gift cards to buy a heavey duty shelf to store everything. The couch is gone and I still have my tractor to go in there, but at least the space is clean. Next step...better lights!

Well, these are pictures without the tractor parked inside. I love the 2k lbs capacity shelves! Next step is a flourescent light and a workbench next to my toolbox.

Nothing like a 8-month update! It's been a while, but you can't really update without doing something. Been caught up with competition shooting. Finally sold the tractor out of the garage, so I decided it was time to build a simple bench for more shelf space.
Supplies:
bench1.jpg

I designed everything on paper first. Using all 2x4 with known dimensions really helped. I cut everything first and then assembled it just like a piece of furniture. I build the whole thing in about an hour and a half.
bench2.jpg

bench3.jpg

Finally, everything was set in place. I used construction adhesive as well as nails to sister the 2x4s for the legs. I then screwed everything together and used short drywall screws for the top. It is 2'x4' top built at 42" high. Perfect height for me to stand up and work without bending over. I eventually want to get a 'bar' chair so I can sit and work at as well.
bench4.jpg

Next step, trim some plywood to go on the bottom as well.

Nicely done! Stick some pegboard to that right side and get a little more storage space plus a little bit of bracing as a bonus.
