I try to visit one of the local scrap yards at least once a week, and I am constantly amazed by what people will scrap. Picked this up, and the only issue was a missing set screw to lock the main lock nut in place.

Now, I just have to clean it up and add a coat or two of paint...

Some of it is undoubtedly stolen goods. The company I work for owns some aluminum plastic injection molds but we use another manufacturing company to produce the parts for us. The other company keeps the molds for us on site at their location. Last year a night time security guard stole 2 of the molds and scraped them. These molds cost around $30,000 each and our subcontracted company was responsible the replacements.

You just roll through looking around the scrap piles or how does this work?

It really depends on the individual scrap yard. The two we have locally will let me roam around and pretty much do what I want, but some won't even let you on the yard (liability issues). Hell, the one I got the vise from has let me run the knuckle boom to load a large I-beam in the back of my truck!

Wow. All the scrap yards in my area are the same way with liability issues. There are a few that have small offices with the Toledo scales and sometimes they leave good items out, but they don't sell it to you for scrap prices. Funny story, I brought a weight lifting set to scrap yard one day. They weighed everything and it came up short. The guy obviously took offense to me questioning it and gave the whole "state tests these scales regularly" etc etc and I can go somewhere else if I have a problem. So I tell the guy I had 600lbs of steel weights and I know this because each plate is marked with its correct weight. His scale was reading something like 480lbs I think. I hinted at calling the state to complain the state official who came out wasn't doing his job correct, at which time the guy told me he'd pay me for the 600lbs and he'd call them. Ya right. Needless to say I never went back to that place.

I can't see the name brand on it, but for me I'd junk it unless it was valuable brand.

Time is money for me and I already have a nice vise, but no time.

The scrap yards in my area look through the stuff first. Then they set the cool stuff off to the side in another section and put some ridiculous price on it. Before they started that I use to get cool stuff at scrap price.

Here they find a reason to pay less. Say they find one metal screw in a pile of radiator cores.suddenly the whole pile is "contaminated". Same with solder.one place told me that they would not pay copper radiator price because they had solder on them. Hello that's how they make them

Wasteful is the city folk around me who would just throw that **** in the dumpster. At least they took it to a scrap yard where it can be recycled or re-sold to a gear head. I don't bother w CL anymore trying to sell stuff like that, too many inbreds. I either give it away to a friend who can use it, or scrap it for a bit of cash and the knowledge that it might come back to me in a fresh stick of square tube (EXTREMELY unlikely I know given where most our scrap is sent, but LET ME have my delusions!)

Oh and funny story, I just scrapped a '90s Audi Avant (wagon). I only got about $60 for the car 'cause prices are so low right now. I cut the cat out first and Converter Guys in VT told me $70 for the cat (I've sold to them before). So I got more for the cat than the whole car. NOW I did have to pay ~$19 large flat rate box so I get more like $51 for the cat, but still worth my time.

My scrapyard doesn't check for cats, but I've read some do and then pay even less for vehicles if it's missing.

They're sometimes just Vermin.

They refused to give me stainless price for a really expensive large medical cart that I had, because it had A little bit of foam insulation in it.

I was about mad enough to take it home again but just decided to throw it in with the steel scrap. The rat immediately walked out there and grabbed it and took it over and threw it on the stainless steel pile

For sure, customers will try similar stunts. Personally, I like to take my scrap in after a nice rainstorm.:)

One scrap yard in my area did get a whole bunch of Snap On tools a few years ago for scrap, were in a fire and someone did buy them.An auto machine shop burned down and were no good after that.Fire takes the temperment out of the steel and Snap On does not cover tools in a fire under warranty.Dad has friend that did buy a snowblower from a scrap yard not running.Found out why,it had carburetor problems.Fixed the carburetor problems and worked fine.Call him "scrounge",likes going to scrap yards buying thing from there. In Michigan, anyone that takes in aluminum for scrap up to 25 pounds and more does not get their money right away.Wait until a check is mailed in.This is due to theft reasons. The rolls of copper wire that consumer's has, there is a GPS built in the roll the wire is put in.Hard to steal and easy to trace.A guy in my area did steal one and the GPS traced it to his house.Cops had to wait for a search warrant to get in this guy's house. The GPS was going off and he denied having it

A lot of people live in the city probably can't store much scrap and my not worth it think it's the time gas and effort to take a few items to the scrap yard so they might get $.40

I know the scale at the yard I visit the most is ridiculously accurate and consistent, it weighs my vehicles almost perfectly the same every time I visit. I can even tell how much fuel is in my truck based on their scale weight...

Where I live none of the scrap places let you take anything period, and they don't give you **** for bringing stuff in either. Nothing local closest yard is 30 miles away, totally not worth the drive to scrap anything so 100% of everything gets thrown in the trash can. The dump is the same way, can't take anything and don't even bother asking. We pay for trash pickup of course, they still charge you to dump anything at the dump, yet the county ******* and whines about all the illegal dumping...well gee let's see the dump charges you for trash pickup plus they charge you if you go to the dump. Yet the dump makes money on a lot of the stuff that you bring up, all the metals, cardboard, lawn/garden debris and wood, either gets turned into mulch, or gets cut up.

What's worse is a guy that works at a dump in another town said they get in huge trouble if he were to bring a bag of garbage from his house to the dump he works at in another town...yet the same bag of garbage still ends up at that landfill he works at LOL as our dump is kind of a transfer station more or less so all the garbage (household) goes to the landfill that the guy works at. Talk about an *** backward system. Everyone whines when people mention that Idaho is *** backwards, but the truth is the truth, this is the most *** backward operating state I've ever seen.

The scrap place in our town used to sell anything by the pound. But now he tries to make a little more money out of things. I got this Ridgid 1/8th to 2" pipe cutter for $4. I spooged it for a week and primed and painted the castings. Came out real nice.

My scrap yard doesn't give a damn what you do. There's always dozens of people digging through the scrap on Saturday. I'm always amazed when I think about what kind of liability insurance they must have.

Those are the types of yards that should be around IMO. It would make sense to let people scavange stuff, hell it may cut down on the amount of stuff that gets melted down because someone didn't want that item anymore, or it was in their parents' estate and they didn't want it, or didn't know what the hell it was so they recycled it LOL.

Although, many places don't allow it...I don't exactly blame them with ever growing number of morons and sue happy people in today's world its no wonder many places don't allow salvaging.

For me it would be wasteful to scrap it. Wouldn't be worth the gas money or time. Just knowing if something has any value takes a certain investment in time in addition to the time spent selling it. I find myself throwing out more and more **** that I planned on selling jjst because it isn't worth the time to list it. Of course that doesn't mean it's worthless to everyone. I always make sure to put anything with scrap or resale value out where folks can see it. That is until I find my yard strewn with trash after some dirt bag went digging through my trash looking for scrap and leaving the mess in the yard. Bottom line is that waste is in the eye of the beholder and depends heavily on who's assets are being wasted and how they value those assets.

Here in Norcal, they won't let you touch anything, liabilty. You get hurt, lifting too heavy an object or cut yourself on the scrap, they are responsible. And the scales are dead acurate, as the local dept. of weights and measures come and inspects it regularly. They do this with any and all public scales, gas pumps, etc. The hardware store that sells nails by the pound? Inspected. Your vegetables at the grocery store? That scale is inspected. I would trust the scrap yard scales long before the the marks on the weights. Course they will all give you as little as possible for scrap, as they are trying to make money. I mean, you aren't the one down on the docks negotiating with buyers...
