This tool has been listed on craigslist in my area nearly everyday for YEARS! I can see why nobody is interested in this "very good condition" pipe wrench, but geez buddy either lower your price, or give up on selling this tool. There used to be a "Dumb and Dumber" hat listed for $5, that kept getting reposted everyday for years as well.

I don't buy spraybomb rebuilds but I know they are done for reason.
IIs the threading on the dynamic side shortened?

I like obviously spraybombed stuff with overspray marks on the floor in the background.

I think older Ridgid wrenches may have had a squared off dynamic jaw back end at one point, rather than the rounded design currently used.
It’s also possible the dynamic jaw is a replacement, since a lot of pope wrenches that use the US/Ridgid type design supposedly may have interchangeable parts.

As for spray bombed tools, one of the worst things I saw years ago, was a Hilti Keyless adapter chuck on eBay, that had been completely spray bombed with black paint.
Hilti tended to purchase decent keyless chucks, which were usually either Metabo Futuro Top, or Rohm Supra SK chucks, attacked to the adapter mounts, and both chuck styles were $100+ chucks, usually made with way better machining than the average keyless chuck.

Someone has been trying to sell this "good condition" GS500 countershaft sprocket on Kijiji here for at least 4 years now.

Surely someone out there needs this rare and valuable part to complete a councours-quality restoration on one of the most beloved classic motorcycles of all time.

I remember back in the 90s when I used to buy the Bargain Finder, there was always an ad for a $3 hard hat. My coworkers and I always said it was a coded signal for a drug deal somewhere.

I don't know what any old thing is worth. I always fall back on the adage "something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it."

That said, when I sell things, I have been know to dig my heels in on some $25 or $30 priced item and stand firm no matter what. I have also been know to take $100 lower offer on an item I originally priced at $400.

What that guy is thinking? Who can tell?

The only reason someone would put that much paint on a wrench is to hide rust, corrosion, damage, or ****-quality metal. Maybe if the seller advertised it as a decorative item, but no one in their right mind would buy this to use.

If the wrench is an original Ridgid with a square end to the dynamic jaw, then it is decades old, and quite possibly rusted and pitted to hell.

I looked thru some catalogs over on archive org.
The Ridgid wrenches with the squared end dynamic jaw seem to still have been listed for sale in 1950, but Ridgid had switched to a dynamic jaw with a rounded end by 1956, meaning the wrench is probably 70 years old, or older, and the squared end design goes all the way back to the 1930s or earlier. (The Ridge Tool company was founded in 1923)
There are plenty of tools that old or older, that are in perfectly good condition, but pipe wrenches seem to lead a hard life, and get abused.

Both Craigslist and FB are overrun by this type of garbage. They need to make the ad free for a month then make the seller pay for relisting if it doesn't sell.

Not everyone thinks like a GJer. It might have had a nice finish or a respectable patina underneath and the seller just doesn’t know what he’s doing.

True, but the EPA restricted the sale of the good paint strippers, so it’s harder to remove problems like this nowadays, even if one is inclined to.

There will always be stuff like this listed, especially on places like Craigslist where it seems that the delusional and the optimistic gather. I occasionally look for analog oscilloscopes on Craigslist and the same sellers are always trying to sell the same ancient Bell & Howell or Heathkit wrecks for $75-$100. These listings stay on there for YEARS.

Ditto the $500 toolboxes that are "full of tools." Every one of them looks like someone crammed them full of yard sale screwdrivers, pot-metal wrenches, and random bits of hardware pulled from the coffee cans Grandpa kept in the garage. And they don't sell, but they're still on there month after month.

I once lowballed an eBay seller that was offering a portable handheld oscilloscope/multimeter for 8x what it was worth. One just like it had sold a week before for $50 so that's what I offered. No, I didn't expect to win. Morbid curiosity just got the better of me and I gave in. The outrage that I received in response would have been funny if it wasn't so pathetic. They were obviously sitting on a GOLD MINE, and a "deplorable person" (their actual words) like me couldn't possibly be expected to understand how valuable this piece of equipment was.

But that scope is STILL on eBay 2+ years later, and the asking price is even HIGHER. And it won't sell, unless someone who knows nothing about scopes decides to shell out $500 for it instead of buying a cheaper and vastly better Fluke or Tektronix. That seems like an unlikely combination of elements, but who knows? Maybe the adrenaline rush of selling something that is colossally overpriced is worth the years of waiting and relisting. Maybe a giant, uneducated fool with lots of money is out there circling the drain as we speak.

I don't understand people at all.

There’s a Sears 1725 rpm 1/2 hp motor on the Orlando Craigslist listed for $350 OBO. It’s been there for years.

"I know what I have."
"Don't waste my time with lowball offers."
"Rare!" - Describing items that are commonly available.
"Customized" - Describing something that's clearly damaged.
"Light Oxidation" - Something that's rusted all the way through.

Classics.

My local CL piss me off tool was a guy in a small nearby community listing a Makita 3-3/8” saw, 9.6v battery powered, with battery and charger, for $189. Used the generic factory image. Listed multiple times per week, for YEARS. I’d flag it multiple times per week, from different computers and IP addresses, it’d disappear for a day or three, then return in Spam mode again. Have not seen it since Covid, when I wasn’t actively searching as much. Now I no longer search the whole Bay Area, too much stuff I won’t drive for right now, and I can’t find it anymore. Hoping he sold it, or got out of the business.

You can buy gnarly paint stripper right at the auto parts store.
