The Tuff Shed Garage Thread

The 20x29 TS garage went up Friday. I was on a trip, and didn't get to see it. I will post pictures to this thread as I progress. The inspection is tomorrow, and they will finish the roofing and main door. Paint should be this week. An electrical contractor is coming out Tuesday to do an estimate. I'll be getting a couple more of those. I hope I don't have the big one! I know it's not going to be cheap. A guy on another forum is an retired EE and he's doing an electrical plan for me. I'm planning on insulation and drywall and capping the ceiling.

I will probably go with Race Deck for the floor. This will mainly be a place to keep my motorbikes and related projects.

Advice and suggestions are welcome.

There is an 8x14 Tuff Shed next to the garage. I'm going to run power to it also. Since I don't have any yard left, I have no need for yard implements. So, I'm going to clean out the shed and make it the shop with the parts cleaner, grinder, all that stuff out there.

Very cool! I like your plan to keep the "dirty work" in the 8x14. I'm currently planning a 20'x40' and will be dividing the space into a 20'x26' main garage/shop and a 20'x14' "dirty room".

Any plans to keep the desert heat at bay?

Just insulation and a ginormous fan on wheels I saw at HD. I saw a nice portable swamp cooler there also.

The paint goes on tomorrow. The electrician was out for an estimate. I'll know in a day or so what the damage will be. It may not happen at all, unless I upgrade the service to my house. I only have 100A service and a quick crunching of the numbers show that I'm already there.

I've come too far to stop now. Doing the upgrade will be $1800-2200 with permits and lots of labor. Digging the old box out of the stucco will not be an easy task, but it can be done in a day I guess.

The back wall of my garage curves up to the footing a bit too, which would preclude the using RaceDeck. I'm guessing you need a level floor. I'm going to see about grinding it down, but in the end, it might just be more cost effective to seal the concrete. I sure like that RD though.

Update to the TS garage. Roofing should go on tomorrow. I'll have some more pictures then. The paint came out great! Same guy that painted the house last year. We used Dunn-Edwards Elastomeric paint. Supposed to be very long lasting. They did a great job, so they will get the interior of the new garage, and the one car attached to the house, when that is emptied.

The electric is going to be a bigger job. Actually, two separate jobs. The first job is to upgrade the service on the house to 200A. Then we can work on the garage. I'm putting the down payment down on the first job tomorrow, so they can get on the schedule at NV Energy to shut down the power at the street.

My neighbor is fortunate to have 3 phase and two separate meters at his home, one just for the shop. In fact, he has a dedicated transformer, I'm not that fortunate.

I'm looking forward to seeing the completed shop in person.

It's seems like a big job. I had it in my head to upgrade the service for a few years. The load calc determined that I was over the 100A just for the house. I guess 200 is the standard now. If I can schedule it right, we can be working on getting the garage wired up while we are waiting for NV Energy, then, hook it all up when they change the house box.

Garage update with new photos!

The exterior is complete. The auto door is a close match to the exterior paint. My painter said he can't paint a new door. Too hard to get the paint to stick. The floor has a little curve where it meets the footing. That is getting ground down today, so I will be able to have my RD floor.

The electric is the next project. That should start next week. I'm going to go with T5HO's. I can get them from a supply company for $59 each. I'm still waiting on the permit from NV Energy to shut off power, so they can replace my powercenter on the house for 200A service. In the meantime, we can rough in the wiring and outlets in the interior of the garage.

UPDATE: The rough electrical is complete. The inspection is supposed to happen today, then I can get to the insulation and drywall. Things will move fast after that. I have my compressor picked out and media blaster decided on. The RD floor, will come first.

We do. I had to get a variance for the back wall. Everything else is in limits. The stack of permits I'm having to get will make for a good size binder.

Icky stuff. I don't know what it is. They are just plain gutters.

The insulation and drywall are complete. Drywall inspection tomorrow, then the tape and mud. Paint by Thursday and finish electric after that.

I've been installing shelving. I went with Closetmaid. I like the wire shelving. I'm going to have to add additional supports to the shelves. The wire is bowing a little. I'm sure it would hold, I just don't want to have an issue. There are a lot of extra speciality shelving you can get, and it's working out well. My original intent, was to run shelving the whole length of the back wall, but the 6ft pieces would not line up. Maybe I can get them to make me a 29ft piece sometime.

That things works pretty good for small quick jobs. The best thing is the handheld attachment. That's why I got it.

I got it on Amazon. It's a horizontal nut and bolt checker. I tried to post the link, but I couldn't get my information off of the link.

The air system is finished. I had to replace the ball valve on the Rapid Air side. I couldn't get it to stop leaking.
