I can't stand the show. They never show the garage at all. I would like to see what it looks like and its potential.

Yeah, my wife watches House Hunters. All those reality shows look totally scripted to me. After you've seen a few episodes, they all look pretty much the same. They NEVER show basements or garages, probably because those things aren't important to the female demographic that show is produced for.

The "manly" reality shows, where they rebuild old cars or design custom cars, aren't much better. They have their own type of drama going.

its not the shows but the people on them. there have been a few where one of the things the guy wanted was a large garage for tools and building cars. some very nice and cheap houses that they saw. all had shop space that i would love lol. also, 90% of the people out there dont care about a garage or what they drive. its just a spot to put the minivan lol

the kicker i always see is how cheap most of the country is. 150k budget and the **** couple in texas (it seems to be always texas) wants all granite and stainless stuff and their max budget is 160k. and they want 3000sqft and a pool bla bla. most times they find it, but you do end up having to live in texas :D

now the show i cant stand is that renovation realities show. i swear that these people should never have a hammer in their hands.

In every single one of those shows the demolition work is done in a manner so far removed from reality it's ridiculous. No one ever just smashes everything with a hammer. Nowhere else have I ever seen a tub thrown through a plate glass window on the second floor into a dumpster. I can't speak for everyone, but who the heck PAINTS decent hardwood furniture or builds a living room/dining room table out of plywood? I'm not much of a carpenter, the thing I do best with wood is burn it in my fire pit, but from what I've seen most of the people here build nicer things for their garage...

I guess I've never watched a single show with a "man's man" on there. I've seen all kinds of pretty guys, or the guy still trying to live off his high school/college popularity, but never seen a single guy that looks like he knows his way around a shop....

My wife watches that show a lot, too. If you pay attention many times the couple or the agent wear the same clothes throughout the show. They have the same formula as the Love it or List it show. 1st house is way more than they can afford but has all the features they wanted. 2nd house is below price range but is too small or whatever. 3rd one is near price target and may have some of the features they wanted or needs updating. Sort of a good primer for the real world.

That show is actually done by Pietown Productions. HGTV doesn't produce anything...they buy the shows from production companies. Pietown also did Weekend Warriors...my wife and I were in one episode back in 2001.

We learned quite a bit about how they do that stuff.

On the clothes...they tell you what NOT to wear...basically, no red or white.

Forget any chronological order....they shoot what they can when and then edit to make a story.

And remember....those shows are designed for women watchers....not too many women care about the garage.

They require you to have already purchased a house or be in negotiations on one. It even says on their website where you can sign up to be on a show. It's scripted "reality".

Yes, some of the shows are way out there. We actually record the international series then just watch the ones where the budget is within reason. Saw one today where the couple was in Dublin Ireland and a budget of $350 a month!
The wife and I want to move to the caribbean at some point. So we like to see what you can get for your money there. Wouldn't have to worry about heating the garage there!

One of the guys I work with was just on the Show. He already owned the house and was painting it before they moved in when they started filming. Totally scripped.

That show IS scripted/fake! I had a strong suspicion of it when I first saw it. Looked it up and sure enough, it's fake. Haven't watched it since.

Edit: regnar beat me to it :)

I like renovation shows...hard to fake a Reno when you can see the before/during/after. Man Caves is my favorite show on that channel.

When I graduated college I FIRST lived in Dallas. 18 months later I moved to LA. Talk about a change in perspective when pricing houses. :lol_hittiLOL.
